After too many years of unfulfilling work, Bronnie Ware began searching for a job with heart. Despite having no formal qualifications or previous experience in the field, she found herself working in palliative care. During the time she spent tending to those who were dying, Bronnie's life was transformed. Later, she wrote an Internet blog post, outlining the most common regrets that the people she had cared for had expressed. The post gained so much momentum that it was viewed by more than three million readers worldwide in its first year. At the request of many, Bronnie subsequently wrote a book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, to share her story. Bronnie has had a colourful and diverse life. By applying the lessons of those nearing their death to her own life, she developed an understanding that it is possible for everyone, if we make the right choices, to die with peace of mind. In this revised edition of the best-selling memoir that has been read by over a million people worldwide, with translations in 29 languages, Bronnie expresses how significant these regrets are and how we can positively address these issues while we still have the time. The Top Five Regrets of the Dying gives hope for a better world. It is a courageous, life-changing book that will leave you feeling more compassionate and inspired to live the life you are truly here to live.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The award-winning book that inspired an Apple Original series from Apple TV+ • A landmark investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital ravaged by Hurricane Katrina—and the suspenseful portrayal of the quest for truth and justice—from a Pulitzer Prize–winning physician and reporter “An amazing tale, as inexorable as a Greek tragedy and as gripping as a whodunit.”—Dallas Morning News After Hurricane Katrina struck and power failed, amid rising floodwaters and heat, exhausted staff at Memorial Medical Center designated certain patients last for rescue. Months later, a doctor and two nurses were arrested and accused of injecting some of those patients with life-ending drugs. Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting by Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink, unspools the mystery, bringing us inside a hospital fighting for its life and into the most charged questions in health care: which patients should be prioritized, and can health care professionals ever be excused for hastening death? Transforming our understanding of human nature in crisis, Five Days at Memorial exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life care and reveals how ill-prepared we are for large-scale disasters—and how we can do better. This authoritative work from CAT pioneer David J. Weiss and Alper Şahin provides a complete how-to guide for planning and implementing an effective CAT to create a test unique to each person in real time. The book reviews the history of CAT and the basics of item response theory used in CAT. It walks the reader through developing an item bank, pretesting and linking items, selecting required CAT options, and using simulations to design a CAT. Available software for CAT delivery is described, including links to free and commercial options. Engaging multidisciplinary examples illustrate applications of CAT for measuring ability, achievement, proficiency, personality, attitudes, perceptions, patients’ reports of their symptoms, and academic or clinical progress.

Book excerpt: Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is known to be associated with an increased risk of neoplastic disorders, especially Kaposi's sarcoma and aggressive B-cell lymphoma for the former, and T-cell lymphoma for the latter. The information obtained from the study of these infections has led to remarkable advances in our understanding of the immune system, as well as the biology of human neoplasms. The management of malignant diseases in such patients also poses substantial challenges to clinicians. This book provides an overview of the epidemiology, biology, clinical features, and clinical management of neoplasms occurring in such individuals. It is an important resource for clinicians treating these diseases, and for basic scientists who have an interest in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthcare in most developed countries face a complex and partly contradictory mix of financial, social and political challenges. Fiscal strains combined with New Public Management agendas have caused severe cutbacks and calls for greater efficiency in public healthcare, resulting in a growing concern about service quality. Co-production and Japanese Healthcare explores a possibility to address these issues from a new perspective that emphasizes greater collaboration between the staff and patients. Here professionals and patients/clients act as ‘partners to co-produce healthcare through their mutual contributions’. Japan has a unique system of two user-owned healthcare providers with nearly 200 hospitals, 500 clinics and 50,000 beds. However, they differ from each other and from public hospitals, in terms of their work environment, service quality, governance models and social values. This volume compares cooperative and public healthcare providers at ten hospitals across Japan with survey data from the staff, as well as from the patients and volunteers at four hospitals. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of healthcare management, public and non-profit management, human resource management.

This book was released on 1995-03-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1993 a clinical trial of fialuridine (FIAU), a promising new medication for hepatitis B, was abruptly terminated when one of the 15 out-patients participating in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) study was suddenly hospitalized with liver failure. Although all the remaining patients were contacted and told to stop taking their medication, six more subsequently developed severe toxicity. Five patients died, and two others were probably saved from death only by having liver transplants. In response to a request from the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, the IOM committee has analyzed the FIAU clinical trials, making recommendations for additional safeguards for the conduct of future clinical trials. This evaluation included the review of documents pertaining to investigational new drug submissions, protocols and consent forms from other clinical trials, as well as information available from other clinical and preclinical experience with compounds related to FIAU and its parent drug, fiacitibine (FIAC), which is metabolized to FIAU. The committee does not seek to affix responsibility for the adverse outcome of this NIH trial, but instead focuses on whether any rules or procedures governing the clinical trials process itself need to be changed, and if so, what burdens or costs such changes might place on future clinical trials.

Book excerpt: The horizons of laparoscopic surgery are expanding, such that the overwhelming majority of abdominal urologic procedures have now been performed laparoscopically. In some of these procedures, the laparoscopic alternative has been demonstrated to be superior to its open counterpart; in others comparative analyses are ongoing; and in yet others, only the initial forays into minimally invasive surgery have been undertaken. This book sets out to collate the current body of knowledge on laparoscopic urology under one cover. The authors are respected experts in the field and have provided concise, thoughtful updates on their respective topics. The information contained in this volume will help urologists to increase their laparoscopic knowledge and skills.
