Book excerpt: Five One-Act Plays on Ideological Fanaticism By: Marvin Perry, Ph.D. In Marvin Perry’s previous books on modern intellectual history, anti-Semitism, and World War II, it was necessary to discuss why people embraced irrational ideas, myths that fostered fanaticism and ultimately proved dangerous for society and even civilization. In this work, he has attempted to treat these themes within a dramatic setting. The five one-act plays in this volume explore the theme of ideological fanaticism. Three of the plays deal with Nazi Germany, the classic example of this phenomenon. The remaining two plays treat contemporary examples of ideological fanaticism, jihadism, and white supremacy. Perry probes within a dramatic context, the thinking and feelings of Nazis (and their opponents), Islamic jihadists, and white supremacists, true believers propelled to commit and to justify atrocities against people they designate as the “other.” These plays need not be performed, but can simply be read and serve as the basis for discussion.

Book excerpt: These six plays represent the best and most humorous of Brecht's shorter works. The Jewish Wife is from the Fear and Misery in the Third Reich cycle of one-act plays, which, along with In Search of Justice and The Informer, chromicles the hardships of life in Nazi Germany. The Exception and the Rule, one of Brecht's most popular short works, grimly depicts the consequences of the mutually dependent -- yet inevitable inequitable -- relationship between the priviledged and the poor; it is included here with The Measures Taken and The Elephant Calf. Though all of these ales of horror, ad Eric Bentley calls them, have tragic undertones, they are also infused with farcical absurdities and cosmic irony so characteristic of Brecht's work.

Book excerpt: (Applause Books). Jewish playwrights and plays of Jewish interest intended for general audiences have been increasingly conspicuous on the American stage since the early 20th century. No wonder. The evolution of Jewish life in America teems with richly dramatic material: immigration, "making it," intergenerational family relationships, the impact of the Great Depression, two World Wars, the Holocaust, the establishment of Israel, and the emergence of feminism and alternative life styles. And pre-eminently and enduringly, the dilemma of identity: how to acculturate without losing one's Jewish identity. A retrospective of the American Jewish repertoire of the last 80 years tells us a good deal about how Jews have perceived themselves and America and how America has perceived Jews. Schiff's collections, Awake and Singing (1995) and Fruitful and Multiplying (1996) were the first ever to represent the magnitude and importance of the American Jewish repertoire. This new edition brings together five plays from those pioneering anthologies: Elmer Rice's Counsellor-at-Law ; Clifford Odets' Awake and Sing! ; Sylvia Regan's Morning Star ; Paddy Chayefsky's The Tenth Man ; and Herb Gardner's Conversations with My Father . They are joined by Broken Glass , Arthur Miller's first play to focus specifically on deeply disturbing American Jewish problems: assimilation, self-hatred and terrified awareness of the Nazi threat to European co-religionists. The introductory essay provides a cultural and historical overview and there are generous headnotes to each play.
