Book Synopsis 5-Minute Plays by : Lawrence Harbison
Download or read book 5-Minute Plays written by Lawrence Harbison and published by Applause Theatre & Cinema. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plays in this volume of 5-Minute Plays are geared toward adults. Some are comedic, some are dramatic, some are realistic in style, while others are more unconventional. Their length makes them perfect for scene work in class. A few of the plays are written by playwrights who have established quite a reputation with their full-length plays, such as Don Nigro, Lee Blessing, Y York, and Sheila Callaghan. But most are by what I call exciting up-and-comers, such as Nicole Pandolfo, Merridith Allen, Andrew Biss, Adam Kraar, Stephanie Hutchinson, Judy Klass, John McKinney, Scott C. Sickles, Graham Techler, Eric Grant, Deanna Alisa Ableser, Kerri Kochanski, Lisa Bruna, and Grace Trotta.
Download or read book Silent Sky written by Lauren Gunderson and published by Dramatists Play Service, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE STORY: When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in “girl hours” and has no time for the women’s probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time, attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications; Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers believe in both, and their dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.

Book Synopsis Plays by George Colman the Younger and Thomas Morton by : Barry Sutcliffe
Download or read book Plays by George Colman the Younger and Thomas Morton written by Barry Sutcliffe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-09-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains edited texts of five plays by two late eighteenth-century dramatists. The plays have been chosen to represent the range of the two playwrights and the variety of dramatic material on offer during the period. The full-length plays and afterpieces by George Colman the Younger and Thomas Morton were as popular as Sheridan's works in their time, but today are seldom performed or read. This discrepancy lies at the heart of Barry Sutcliffe's extensive introduction, which explores the critical and social background to the dramatic activity of the period and relates the dramas to the shifting demands of the theatre audiences for whom these plays were written.

Download or read book Fun and Games written by Anthony Dowson and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2005 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 20 years of coaching and teaching experience, UK authors Anthony Dowson and Keith Morris have realized that children's encounters with sporting activities need to be creative, entertaining and fun. Children can be encouraged to engage in physical activity through fun games that stimulate both body and mind. Fun games keep children healthy and active now as well as contribute to a more positive attitude towards physical activity for life. In response to numerous requests from teachers and coaches, the authors have developed and adapted an array of activities and games from their own everyday use when teaching children. The book contains a range of warm-up ideas, games, skill practices and sport-specific activities to motivate children and encourage active participation. The games use only common sport equipment and are supported by easy-to-follow instructions and illustrations. Useful in both planning and providing physical education lessons and recreational experiences, this book makes it easy to create a varied and exciting program. The text includes more than 30 multi-sport games suitable for children of ages 5 to 16. There are sport-specific games for cricket, striking and fielding, rugby, soccer, tennis, badminton and hockey, as well as parachute games. All activities are designed to improve children's skills in specific sports through the use of enjoyable games to promote learning. Each game offers multiple variations designed to suit a wide range of ages and abilities. With childhood obesity becoming increasingly common, children's physical activity is becoming more important. Healthy, active young people now mean a future generation of adults less affected by the health problems associated with obesity and inactive lifestyles. Anyone who has the responsibility of organizing activities for young people will find the ideas in Fun and Games invaluable. Through the practical games in this book, children will develop new skills as they participate in fun and enjoyable activities.

Book Synopsis Greek Satyr Play: Five Studies by : Mark Griffith
Download or read book Greek Satyr Play: Five Studies written by Mark Griffith and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new introduction and some revisions, these essays on Classical Greek satyr plays, originally published in various venues between 2002 and 2010, suggest new critical approaches to this important dramatic genre and identify previously neglected dimensions and dynamics within their original Athenian context. Griffith shows that satyr plays, alongside the ludicrous and irresponsible, but harmless, antics of their chorus, presented their audiences with culturally sophisticated narratives of romance, escapist adventure, and musical-choreographic exuberance, amounting to a zparallel universey to that of the accompanying tragedies in the City Dionysia festival. The class oppositions between heroic/divine characters and the rest (choruses, messengers, servants, etc.) that are so integral to Athenian tragedy are shown to be present also, in exaggerated form, in satyr drama, with the satyr chorus occupying a role that also inevitably recalled for the Athenian audiences their own (often foreign-born) slaves. Meanwhile the familiar main characters of tragedy (Heracles, Danae and Perseus, Hermes and Apollo, Achilles, Odysseus, etc.) are re-deployed in an engaging milieu of erotic encounters, miraculous discoveries, guaranteed happy endings, marriages, and painless release from suffering for all, both for the well-behaved heroes and also for the low-life, playful satyrs (the slaves of Dionysus). In their fusion of adventure and romance, fantasy and naïvete, Aphrodite and Dionysus, Athenian satyr plays thus anticipate in many respects, Griffith suggests, the later developments of Greek pastoral and prose romance.
