Book Synopsis The Central Park Five by : Sarah Burns
Download or read book The Central Park Five written by Sarah Burns and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spellbinding account of the real facts of the Central Park jogger case that powerfully reexamines one of New York City's most notorious crimes and its aftermath. • A must-read after watching Ava DuVernay's When They See Us On April 20th, 1989, two passersby discovered the body of the "Central Park jogger" crumpled in a ravine. She'd been raped and severely beaten. Within days five black and Latino teenagers were apprehended, all five confessing to the crime. The staggering torrent of media coverage that ensued, coupled with fierce public outcry, exposed the deep-seated race and class divisions in New York City at the time. The minors were tried and convicted as adults despite no evidence linking them to the victim. Over a decade later, when DNA tests connected serial rapist Matias Reyes to the crime, the government, law enforcement, social institutions and media of New York were exposed as having undermined the individuals they were designed to protect. Here, Sarah Burns recounts this historic case for the first time since the young men's convictions were overturned, telling, at last, the full story of one of New York’s most legendary crimes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come with me to investigate some of the most unnerving tales of human wickedness in Unbelievable Crimes Volume Five. In the fifth installment of the series, I’ll take you deep into the shadows of true crime history to uncover a new selection of shocking crimes you may not have heard of before. From deranged kidnappings to murderous teenage gangs, this volume of Unbelievable Crimes will cover some truly twisted tales from truly wicked people. Discover the crimes of a master manipulator and cold-blooded killer who acted like an upstanding member of his community in Mesa, Arizona. When his horrific crimes came to light, no one could believe he was capable of such cruelty - but irrefutable DNA evidence proved otherwise. Retrace the harrowing saga of the Gallegos, a married couple who just so happened to be dangerous predators. The sadistic duo prowled the streets of California in the late 70s, searching for young victims to lure into their van before carrying out their depraved desires. I’ll cover the story behind the murder of Danielle Jones, a young life cut short in England in 2001. Sadly, her body was never found, but in an unusual twist, the case was cracked by analysis of text messages sent by the killer. Explore the tale of Armin Meiwes, a German man who craved human flesh. Not only did Armin act upon his macabre desire, but he also found a victim who was willing to be eaten. His twisted appetite would be satisfied - but a man would die in the process. Learn about a case so callous it defies belief: a British mother who killed her children in a sick act of filicide. Why? Because they got in the way of her dating life. Get to know about the devastating murder of a young girl whose killer escaped justice for over three decades. In the early 90s, Nikki Allan was horrifically and senselessly killed, and for years it seemed like her murderer would never be brought to justice. A new phenomenon of true crime sees historic crimes getting solved with new DNA capabilities. Therefore, criminals from years ago are now being brought to justice - this is one such case. Uncover these cases, as well as six more stories in Unbelievable Crimes Volume Five. Just like the previous books in this series, I do my best to ensure the victims’ suffering is remembered and the shameful actions of the criminals are highlighted. As with all the installments of this series, I’ll examine the darkest depths of human malice. I recount real-life cases of murder, violence, and unimaginable cruelty. Please bear this in mind before reading.

Book Synopsis The Record of Linji by : Thomas Yuho Kirchner
Download or read book The Record of Linji written by Thomas Yuho Kirchner and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Linji lu (Record of Linji) has been an essential text of Chinese and Japanese Zen Buddhism for nearly a thousand years. A compilation of sermons, statements, and acts attributed to the great Chinese Zen master Linji Yixuan (d. 866), it serves as both an authoritative statement of Zen’s basic standpoint and a central source of material for Zen koan practice. Scholars study the text for its importance in understanding both Zen thought and East Asian Mahayana doctrine, while Zen practitioners cherish it for its unusual simplicity, directness, and ability to inspire. One of the earliest attempts to translate this important work into English was by Sasaki Shigetsu (1882–1945), a pioneer Zen master in the U.S. and the founder of the First Zen Institute of America. At the time of his death, he entrusted the project to his wife, Ruth Fuller Sasaki, who in 1949 moved to Japan and there founded a branch of the First Zen Institute at Daitoku-ji. Mrs. Sasaki, determined to produce a definitive translation, assembled a team of talented young scholars, both Japanese and Western, who in the following years retranslated the text in accordance with modern research on Tang-dynasty colloquial Chinese. As they worked on the translation, they compiled hundreds of detailed notes explaining every technical term, vernacular expression, and literary reference. One of the team, Yanagida Seizan (later Japan’s preeminent Zen historian), produced a lengthy introduction that outlined the emergence of Chinese Zen, presented a biography of Linji, and traced the textual development of the Linji lu. The sudden death of Mrs. Sasaki in 1967 brought the nearly completed project to a halt. An abbreviated version of the book was published in 1975, but neither this nor any other English translations that subsequently appeared contain the type of detailed historical, linguistic, and doctrinal annotation that was central to Mrs. Sasaki’s plan. The materials assembled by Mrs. Sasaki and her team are finally available in the present edition of the Record of Linji. Chinese readings have been changed to Pinyin and the translation itself has been revised in line with subsequent research by Iriya Yoshitaka and Yanagida Seizan, the scholars who advised Mrs. Sasaki. The notes, nearly six hundred in all, are almost entirely based on primary sources and thus retain their value despite the nearly forty years since their preparation. They provide a rich context for Linji’s teachings, supplying a wealth of information on Tang colloquial expressions, Buddhist thought, and Zen history, much of which is unavailable anywhere else in English. This revised edition of the Record of Linji is certain to be of great value to Buddhist scholars, Zen practitioners, and readers interested in Asian Buddhism.

Book Synopsis Situational Prevention of Organised Crimes by : Ronald V. Clarke
Download or read book Situational Prevention of Organised Crimes written by Ronald V. Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situational crime prevention is the art and science of reducing opportunities for crime. Despite accumulating evidence of its value in reducing many different kinds of crime - such as burglary, fraud, robbery, car theft, child sexual abuse and even terrorism - little has previously been published about its role in reducing organised crimes. This collection of case studies, by a distinguished international group of researchers, fills this gap by documenting the application of a situational prevention approach to a variety of organised crimes. These include sex trafficking, cigarette and drug smuggling, timber theft, mortgage fraud, corruption of private professionals and public officials, and subversion of tendering procedures for construction projects. By moving the focus away from the nature of criminal organisations to the analysis of the crimes committed by these organisations, the book opens up a fresh agenda for policy and research. Situational Prevention of Organised Crimes will be of interest to those tasked with tackling organised crime problems, as well as those interested in understanding the ways that organised crime problems have manifested themselves globally, and how law enforcement and other agencies might seek to tackle them in the future.
