Southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee has a number of trophy fisheries, including Dale Hollow Lake which straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee state line and is home of the world record smallmouth bass; the Cumberland River which is a trophy trout fishery maintained by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife and has also produced numbers of trophy walleye, sauger, and monster stripers over the years; Barren River Lake, which has an excellent population of bass and crappie; Cordell Hull, which produces a number of different species, including largemouth bass, walleye, sauger, and stripers; and Lake Cumberland, which is another excellent smallmouth and striper lake. In his career as a journalist, Milam has been fortunate to fish all of these waters with very knowledgeable anglers and has shared their knowledge through his newspaper, magazine, and online articles. He has written literally hundreds of articles on fishing southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee and has also served as a fishing guide on many of these same waters. In this book he shares what he has learned over the years from these expert anglers. Obviously the information in this book will aid the reader if he or she has the opportunity to make a fishing trip to southern Kentucky or northern Tennessee, but it will also allow him or her to become a better angler on their own home waters. Many of the techniques discussed in this book will easily translate into success on fishing locations throughout the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised and updated edition of the complete angler's guide to the tailwater trout fisheries of the Southeastern United States takes anglers on a tour through nine states and 46 fisheries. In the 1930s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Tennessee Valley Authority began erecting dams on rivers throughout the Southeast to promote water conservation and to generate hydroelectric power. By the 1940s, fisheries managers began to realize that the cold waters released through the tailraces of these dams could support trout, and a new era of angling dawned in the southeastern U.S. Today the range of tailwater trout in the South has expanded to include northern Alabama and portions of Arkansas, as well as western Kentucky and Tennessee. More than 40 tailwaters are now recognized as trout fisheries. They provide some of the best trout fishing in the South, and constitute the waters in this region most likely to give up a trophy-sized trout. Each tailwater description includes complete information on regulations, public access points, and a map. Jacobs discusses safety concerns and gives crucial information on when to go and how to reach each tailwater, as well as revealing insiders' tactics for fly-, bait-, and spin-fishing. 35 black & white photographs, 55 maps, index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Downstream: Reflections on Brook Trout, Fly Fishing, and the Waters of Appalachia is a mosaic combining nature writing, fly-fishing narrative, memoir, and philosophical and spiritual inquiry. Fly-fishing narratives and fragments of memoir provide the narrative arc for exploring relationships between humans and rivers, and the ways in which our attitudes and philosophies impact our practices and the waters we depend on for life. The authors guide their readers on a journey from Maine's Androscoggin watershed--once one of the ten filthiest rivers in the United States and now home to some of the best wild brook trout fishing in the United States--southward through Kentucky into Tennessee and North Carolina, where a native southern strain of brook trout struggles to survive. Like the rivers themselves, the chapters alternate between flowing narratives and the stiller waters that settle out above dams. While each stone in this mosaic is worth a close look in its own right, seen from a distance the book offers a broader picture of the cold mountain waters of Appalachia and their famous native fish: the brook trout. .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }
