Book excerpt: “Beautiful. ... A lyrical companion to his father’s classic, A River Runs through It, chronicling their family’s history and bond with Montana’s Blackfoot River.” —Washington Post A "poetic" and "captivating" (Publishers Weekly) memoir about the power of place to shape generations, Home Waters is John N. Maclean's remarkable chronicle of his family's century-long love affair with Montana's majestic Blackfoot River, the setting for his father's classic novella, A River Runs through It. Maclean returns annually to the simple family cabin that his grandfather built by hand, still in search of the trout of a lifetime. When he hooks it at last, decades of longing promise to be fulfilled, inspiring John, reporter and author, to finally write the story he was born to tell. A book that will resonate with everyone who feels deeply rooted to a landscape, Home Waters is a portrait of a family who claimed a river, from one generation to the next, of how this family came of age in the 20th century and later as they scattered across the country, faced tragedy and success, yet were always drawn back to the waters that bound them together. Here are the true stories behind the beloved characters fictionalized in A River Runs through It, including the Reverend Maclean, the patriarch who introduced the family to fishing; Norman, who balanced a life divided between literature and the tug of the rugged West; and tragic yet luminous Paul (played by Brad Pitt in Robert Redford’s film adaptation), whose mysterious death has haunted the family and led John to investigate his uncle’s murder and reveal new details in these pages. A universal story about nature, family, and the art of fly fishing, Maclean’s memoir beautifully captures the inextricable ways our personal histories are linked to the places we come from—our home waters. Featuring twelve wood engravings by Wesley W. Bates and a map of the Blackfoot River region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader will quickly be drawn into an audience of grandchildren who are listening to their grandpa tell them a bedtime story that twists and turns in their mind as if they were on a winding trail interconnecting five generations of their family. Together they discover, in a most captivating and surprising way, the bonding elements of love between those whom we call family. The story takes place when the grandpa was five years old and his own grandfather, Ike, driving a funny old car called a Model A, took him and his two older brothers fishing. It was going to be the best day of his life. The excitement builds as the story comes alive, as if it was happening right at that moment. But then, suddenly a near tragedy takes place. An event the children's grandpa had never shared with them before. When the story ends, and in the still silence of the night, just before their grandpa turns off the light in the treehouse he built for them, all the children are out of their sleeping bags hugging their grandpa and each other. This story is likely to invoke children's interest in the experiences of adults, be it parents, grandparents or extended family members.

Download or read book The Fisherman written by John Langan and published by Canelo. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Illusory, frightening, and deeply moving, The Fisherman is a modern horror epic. And it’s simply a must read’ Paul Tremblay In upstate New York, within the woods, Dutchman’s Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked and fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other’s company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumours of the Creek and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss them. Soon, though, the men find themselves drawn into a tale as deep and old as the Reservoir. It's a tale of dark pacts, of long-buried secrets, and of a mysterious figure known as the Fisherman. It will bring Abe and Dan face to face with all that they have lost, and with the price they must pay to regain it. ‘An epic, yet intimate, horror novel. Langan channels M. R. James, Robert E. Howard and Norman Maclean. What you get is A River Runs Through It... straight to hell’ Laird Barron More praise for The Fisherman ‘Reading this, your mouth fills with worms. Just let them wriggle and crawl as they will, though—don’t swallow. John Langan is fishing for your sleep, for your soul. I fear he’s already got mine’ Stephen Graham Jones ‘What starts as a slow, melancholy tale gains momentum and drops you head first into a churning nightmare from which you might escape, but you’ll never forget, and the memory of what you saw will change you forever’ Richard Kadrey ‘The Fisherman is a treasure, the kind of book you just want to snuggle up and shiver through. I can’t say enough good things about the confidence, the patience, the satisfying cumulative power of this book. It was a pleasure to read from the first page to the last’ Victor LaValle ‘Stories within stories, folk tales becoming modern legends, all spinning into a fisherman’s tale about the one he wishes had gotten away. Langan’s latest is at turns epic and personal, dense yet compulsively readable, frightening but endearing’ Adam Cesare
Book Synopsis Grandfather's Journal by : C.W. Hanes
Download or read book Grandfather's Journal written by C.W. Hanes and published by Yorkshire Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story I was told when I was fourteen or fifteen years old and it is based on a true story about a cave at the top of a mountain along the Red River. Three men went into a cave that overlooked Red River around 1923 or 1927. You could see the river from the cave, but you couldn't see the cave from the river. As they were searching through the cave they found a pit with a log lying across it about two feet across with a hair rope tied around it descending down, down into the pit. They said it looked like horsehair. They lowered one of the men into the pit to approximately thirty or forty feet where he landed on a rock ledge. He walked around the ledge shining his carbide light and noticed the pit descended another 100 feet or so. Circumferencing the ledge area he noticed another opening. He yelled out to the two men at the top of the pit to let them know he found another cave entrance. As he shined his light into the opening of the cave, he became excited; he saw Spanish helmets, breastplates, muskets, bows, and arrows. There were also spears, trunks with clothing, gold, and silver. His heart began to race as he stood at the edge of the entrance. He looked down and noticed a mask mostly covered with dirt on the cave floor in the opening. He bent over, picked it up and brushed the dust off the mask. When he did, the mask began to glow and voices filled the air around him. The voices were deafening and the mask glowed as if it were on fire. He threw the mask down to the cave floor and started screaming pull me up, please get me out of here, pull me up. They said when his feet hit the cave floor he ran out of the cave never stopping until he had gotten back to the car. He had covered five miles to get back to the car, crossing over mountains and dry creek beds. They couldn't catch him. An hour later when they got back to the car, he was lying on the back floorboard covered with a blanket. When they finally coaxed him out of the car, he told them everything that he experienced. He said: "I'll never go into that cave again as long as I live!"
