Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishing in American Waters: A New Edition, Containing Parts Six and Seven, on Southern and Miscellaneous Fishes As it might not be deemed kind in me to inflict upon the reader my thousand reasons for writing and illustrating this book with pencil sketches copied from life, 1 will therefore merely state that my experience of many years in the practice of the gentle art, which has led me through so many scenes of beauty and loveliness, has made me wish that all the world might learn the enjoyment conferred by the practice of angling. I have endeavored to portray the recreations of the angler in America, with his implements and his game; adding a small tribute to the temperate and industrious class of men who follow for a livelihood the hazardous business of fishing on the broad seas. An outline of the progress of fish-culture in Europe and America is also given, with pencil sketches illustrative of the art of hatching and rearing fishes, including stairs and fish-passes for enabling fishes to surmount mill-dams and falls. The fishes of om coast and estuaries, and the peculiar methods adopted for their capture, form not only a sealed book to Europeans, but to those anglers in America also who confine their recreations to fresh-water attractions. Each game fish affords a distinct interest, with peculiarities worth studying. My sketches may lack artistic finish, but possess the merit of correct outline; and in the words of Raphael, "The outline is the picture." The reader may be assured that fishing, whether for recreation or gain, entices its votaries to unexplored sources of revenue and pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, 1927, Vol. 43: In Two Parts-Part I The field work that resulted in the present report was begun in 1912 when Lewis Radcliffe and the late William W. Welsh undertook a study of the anadromous clupeoids principally on the Potomac River and at the head of Chesapeake Bay. These studies were continued more or less intermittently until the winter of 1914 - 15, when the Fisheries steamer Fish Hawk was assigned to this work and the scope was enlarged to include a general biological and physical examination of Chesapeake Bay. This work, which was then under the supervision of Lewis Radcliffe, was interrupted by the World War. It was resumed in 1920 under the immediate supervision of Dr. R. P. Cowles, of Johns Hopkins University. In 1921 the general survey was supplemented by a special investigation of the fishes of Chesapeake Bay by the authors of the present report and was continued at intervals until the fall of 1922, when all the field operations pertaining to the Chesapeake Bay investigations were brought to a close. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, 1928, Vol. 44 It has been observed, also, by a number of investigators that there ex1sts a definite relation between the temperature of Water and the B. Colt score in the Oysters. Gorham Pease and Gage and Go'rham (1925) have shown that in winter the bacterial content Of oysters taken from polluted waters is abnormally low. Discussing this phenomenon, ' the investigators attributed it to the slowing down of biological activity of the oyster as a result of a reduction of temperature and came to the conclusion that with the' decrease in temperature the oyster passes into a State of hibernation. Round working on the bacteriology of oysters, came to the Conclusion that Oysters close their shells for varying periods of time, depending on temperature. 'according to his Opinion the opening and closing of the shell 18 controlled by the rapidity of metabolic processes, which in turn are controlled by temperature. He failed to support this statement with the experimental data, however. Cumming (1916) has shown that January and February were the months when the B. Colt content of water taken at the mouths of rivers was highest and the Iowest for oysters taken from the same locality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, Vol. 38: 1921-1922 There are few animals that lend themselves more readily to a laboratory or lecture demonstration than do these stem - dwelling larva. They seem to differ decidedly from other chironomids, especially those that characteristically live in a mud burrow, in their reactions to strong light. Their greater tolerance of light enables one to demon strate the Silk-spinning movements and the general behavior of the larva by means of a stereopticon. The only requirements are that the larva shall have recently built a fresh, clean Silk tube in a glass preparation, and that the temperature of the water be kept down to normal room temperature. The reason for requiring that the silken tube be a fresh one is that after a week or two the silk becomes much discolored by the lodgment of fine particles as well as by the deliberate attachment of masses of castings to the ends of the burrow. It is only necessary to remove the larva by a jet Of water and then the tube can be removed by a needle. A few hours will usually suffice to enable them to again replace the silken tube. The temperature is easily controlled by having a Specially constructed lantern slide through which a current of water can be made to pass. A type used with considerable success was constructed as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
