Book excerpt: In this book, Dr. Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury presents evidence of a cure for incurable diseases such as Type-1 Diabetes, thalassemia, and chronic kidney diseases. What currently hinders the dissemination of his curative methods to patients is a law known as the "Drug & Magic Remedy Act," which assumes that the mentioned diseases are not curable and seeks to prevent or prosecute any attempts to provide a cure. Are the health authorities blinded by this law or influenced by the health/pharmaceutical industry, which stands to lose if Dr. Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury's cure becomes known to mankind? The author hopes that this book will directly connect him to the patients who need his innovations the most.

The analysis is supported by presentation of a variety of case studies on the ways in which mobile technologies can be used to increase connectivity with health care providers and relevant others in order to promote healthy lifestyles and improve service provision. Detailed information is also provided on a sample project in which a set of tools has been used by teens at risk of obesity to record their sociopsychological environment and everyday health routines. Specifically, it is evaluated whether video diaries, created using a mobile platform and shared in real time via a social network, assist subjects in confronting obesity as a chronic disease. The book will be of interest to all who wish to understand the impressive potential of mobile health or to conduct research in the field.

Book excerpt: Neuropsychological assessments are now widely used to identify learning disabilities and shape educational interventions. However, many special education teachers, speech therapists, lawyers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, rehabilitation counselors, and a host of other "helping" professions know very little about how to interpret and act on information contained in neuropsychological assessments. The neuropsychological evaluations discussed in this text help shed light on a wide variety of psychiatric and medical conditions, including learning disabilities, severe and persistent mental illness, traumatic brain injury, neuropsychiatric disorders with accompanying chronic cognitive deficits, and acquired or congenital neurological conditions. This book emphasizes the breadth and depth of neuropsychological assessments and the many practical uses they have, such as treatment planning, diagnosis, interventions, and many more. The authors offer practical guidance on neuropsychological testing and assessment across the lifespan, from pediatric through geriatric patients. The book is designed specifically for those professionals with little to no training in neuropsychology that need to apply knowledge gleaned from neuropsychological assessments. Key topics discussed: Neuropsychological testing and psychoanalysis Using neuropsychological instruments in school settings: possibilities and limitations Using neuropsychological information in vocational rehabilitation planning Neuropsychology and speech/language therapy

Book excerpt: Love and Health is a classic account of good triumphing over evil, of being given a lemon and making lemonade. It is an intimate sharing of a success story that started with anger and ended in love. Indeed, it is the tale of a personal defeat that developed into a program of love so timely and unique that for one bright shining moment it profoundly changed a university and a hospital and the people who worked there. Dr. Jerry Ainsworth was an administrator at his university when he became embroiled in a conflict with his administration. The battle became so intense and hostile that he was relieved of his administrative post and assigned a menial, punitive position. This dismissal angered him to such a degree that he started a movement to oust the president, or, if not to get rid of him, at least to embarrass him or weaken him politically. After months of seething with anger, he developed a life-threatening medical condition that doctors told him was a direct result of anger and could soon cause his death. Astonished, he delved into existing research literature to determine if anger could actually kill. Not only did he learn that it could, he was equally surprised to discover evidence confirming the healing effects of love and of similar positive emotions. Dr. Ainsworth immediately incorporated these findings into his own life, alleviating all symptoms of anger and pioneering the development of an undergraduate college course on love and health. Although colleagues were initially apprehensive, apathetic, and even pessimistic toward such an idea, student reactions were exactly the opposite. His classes were so successful that he started a graduate course along similar lines.
