Book Synopsis Fish passage technologies : protection at hydropower facilities. by :
Download or read book Fish passage technologies : protection at hydropower facilities. written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this report is technologies for fish passage around hydropower generation facilities and protection against entrainment and turbine mortality. Emphasis is given to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)-licensed hydropower projects where fish protection is a subject of controversy and congressional interest due to the Federal Power Act (FPA) and the Electric Consumers Protection Act (ECPA). Thus institutional issues related to FERC-relicensing are also discussed. (Major points of controversy are high-lighted in box 1.1).

Book Synopsis Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration by : Ulrich Schwevers
Download or read book Fish Protection Technologies and Fish Ways for Downstream Migration written by Ulrich Schwevers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive review of current systems for fish protection and downstream migration. It offers the first systematic description of the currently available technologies for fish protection at hydropower intakes, including accurate and timely data collected by the authors and other researchers. It describes how to design and test them in agreement with the guidelines established from the EU Water Framework Directive. The book includes important information about fish biology, with a special focus on swimming and migration mechanisms. It offers a robust bridge between concepts in applied ecology and civil hydraulic engineering, thus providing biologists and hydraulic engineers with an authoritative reference guide to both the theory and practice of fish protection. It is also of interest for planners, public authorities as well as environmental consultants

Book Synopsis Design of Fishways and Other Fish Facilities by : Charles H. Clay
Download or read book Design of Fishways and Other Fish Facilities written by Charles H. Clay and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the best-selling book describes the main types of fishways and fish facilities used around the world to assist the passage of fish over dams and other obstructions to their migration. It also focuses on the protection of fish (mainly young fish) from the hazards encountered in their downstream migrations. The book brings together the type of knowledge and research needed to decide on the facility used as well as its design and operation. It emphasizes the need for both biologists and engineers to collaborate in the design and indicates in what fields such collaboration would benefit fisheries conservation in the future. This is the Second Edition of the only book to bring together all of these topics worldwide under one cover.

Book Synopsis Benefits of Fish Passage and Protection Measures at Hydroelectric Projects by :
Download or read book Benefits of Fish Passage and Protection Measures at Hydroelectric Projects written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Department of Energy's Hydropower Program is engaged in a multi-year study of the costs and benefits of environmental mitigation measures at nonfederal hydroelectric power plants. An initial report (Volume 1) reviewed and surveyed the status of mitigation methods for fish passage, instream flows, and water quality; this paper focuses on the fish passage/protection aspects of the study. Fish ladders were found to be the most common means of passing fish upstream; elevators/lifts were less common, but their use appears to be increasing. A variety of mitigative measures is employed to prevent fish from being drawn into turbine intakes, including spill flows, narrow-mesh intake screens, angled bar racks, and lightor sound-based guidance measures. Performance monitoring and detailed, quantifiable performance criteria were frequently lacking at non-federal hydroelectric projects. Volume 2 considers the benefits and costs of fish passage and protection measures, as illustrated by case studies for which performance monitoring has been conducted. The report estimates the effectiveness of particular measures, the consequent impacts on the fish populations that are being maintained or restored, and the resulting use and non-use values of the maintained or restored fish populations.
Book Synopsis Innovations in Fish Passage Technology by : Mufeed Odeh

Book excerpt: Odeh (Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center) presents 13 contributions which explore the technical possibilities of constructing effective fish bypass systems for hydroelectric dams, especially those that are due for relicensing in the context of new regulations. The articles consist of case studies in the effectiveness of such techniques as surface bypass systems, modular inclined screens, hydroacoustic evaluation of fish entrainment patterns, surface collection, surface spill gates, and radio-tagging and radar tracking behavior evaluation strategies.
