Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metaphor is a hallmark of Classical Hebrew poetry. Some metaphors, such as “Yhwh is king” or “Yhwh is warrior,” play a foundational role. The same does not hold for metaphors from the fishing industry. Because they had access to only two major freshwater sources, archaeological research demonstrates that this industry did not play a major socioeconomic role in ancient Israel. Fishing has nevertheless made a substantial contribution to prophetic and wisdom literature. All metaphors manifest reality, but given the physical circumstances of a largely agrarian, nonmarine society, what does the sustained presentation of fishing metaphors in the Hebrew Bible communicate? Examining the use of fishing images in the Hebrew Bible is a formidable task that demands an open mind and a capacity to mine the gamut of contemporaneous evidence. In Fishers of Fish and Fishers of Men, Tyler Yoder presents the first literary study devoted to the fishing images used in the Hebrew Scriptures as well as in the Mesopotamian textual records. This calls for a penetrating look into cultural contact with Israel’s neighbors to the east (Mesopotamia) and southwest (Egypt). Though nearly all fishing metaphors in the Hebrew Bible carry overt royal or divine connotations that mirror uses well-attested in Mesopotamian literature, this comparative analysis remains a largely untapped area of research. In this study of the diverse literary qualities of fishing images, Yoder offers a holistic understanding of how one integral component of ancient Near Eastern society affected the whole, bringing together the assemblage of disparate materials related to this field of study to enable scholars to integrate these data into related research and move the conversation forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here fishing guide and fly designer Henry Cowen shares decades of hard-earned knowledge of stripers for the first time. Learn about the species, its food, and where and how to find them, so you can land far more and bigger stripers. Knowing where and how to find stripers is key, and Cowen offers proven techniques for locating fish in both reservoirs and rivers, including water temperature, seasonal patterns, weather patterns, locating the bait, water clarity, and wildlife and how it can help anglers. The popularity of fishing for striped bass in freshwater is growing quickly, especially as global warming allows the fish to live in waters that used to be too cold. This is the first major book on the subject, one that is sure to be part of a big trend among fly fishers. Cowen carefully outlines fishing tactics, along with detailed photographs of the steps involved, covering: Retrieving a striper Fishing a point, uphill and downhill Working a topwater fly (constant retrieve) Hooking a fish (strip strike) Fishing a hump Fishing a saddle or blow-through Fishing a breakwater Using the countdown method Fishing a deep hole in a river Fishing a creek in a river And much more! Cowen also takes a close look at freshwater striped bass, explaining how natural and stocked fisheries are managed as well as the difference between the various species. Along with help choosing equipment and some notes on wading tactics, anglers will have everything they need to improve their fishing techniques or make a start on this popular all-American outdoor sport.

There's More To Fishing (Than Catching Fish) is about the friendships that grow with the fishing days, about getting to know a home water, traveling to distant waters, about the food and drink at fishing camp, about the workings of the natural world, about fishing as youngsters and as old-timers, about fishing nights in front of the fireplace, about the underlying romantic nature of fishermen and about how the act of fishing leads to the angler's infamous disregard for the truth. There's More To Fishing (Than Catching Fish) reveals to the angler and non-angler alike a natural world that functions according to its own timeless rhythms. It is world of wild western rivers, Florida salt flats, and salmon-choked Alaskan waters. It is a world of thunderstorms, whitewater driftboats and the poignant cycle of salmon returning to their natal waters. It is a world peopled by family, friends, liars and seers. It is a world seen through the eyes of a quizzical angler in search of fish and other mysteries of life. At once perceptive and humorous, it is a book from the heart that is not easily forgotten.

Ten thoroughly entertaining themed chapters include 'Ones That Got Away', 'Ones That Didn’t Get Away' and 'Fish That Bit Back'. Each is introduced by Paxman’s own sharp, humorous observations and features both contemporary and historical writing about fishing in prose and verse, covering everything from tench tickling to piranha attacks. Some pieces are well known favourites, others are obscure, every one is a delight. 'A superb compilation because it roams from carp to cod, trout to tarpon and does not regurgitate the same old clippings. Paxman has clearly read widely and wisely in putting this together ... probably the definitive anthology of angling writing.' Keith Elliott, Independent on Sunday.
