Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early European History This book aims to furnish a concise and connected account of human progress during ancient, medieval, and early modern times. It should meet the requirements of those high schools and prepara tory schools where ancient history, as a separate discipline, is being supplanted by a more extended course introductory to the study of recent times and contemporary problems. Such a course was first outlined by the Regents of the University of the State of New York in their Syllabus for Secondary Schools, issued in 1910. The author of this book has met the essential require ments of the Committee of Eight, but, believing that a sixth grade child will not make the association between the European Beginnings of our history and our own history, if the two are not given in close connection with out the break of a summer vacation, She has taken the liberty of shortening the time allotted to the study of European Beginnings, and has combined this subject with American history for a year's course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Impressions of Europe The title of this little volume might well serve for its preface also. On his first return from abroad, the novice, possibly because familiarity has some tendency to blunt intuition and dim the vividness of national contrasts, is apt to be more closely questioned about his impressions than is the veteran traveler. Such impressions, however, while frequently they may be of value in disclosing new view-points, should, in many cases, be offered tentatively, and rather as personal opinions than finalities. Our journey was undertaken without pre-consultation of guide-books. When visiting a famous place, first the results of observation and direct local inquiry were noted; then Baedeker and his professional brethren were consulted, but merely for corroboration or a few essential statistics. We can recommend every step of the tour herein described to those entering upon their European novitiate; indeed, we have hopes that the book, with all its limitations, may prove a convenient vade-mecum to more experienced travelers, and help them to while away a few hours of oceanic monotony. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Commerce in Europe The issue of this second edition has given the author the Opportunity of correcting several errors of fact and of expression that have been pointed out to, or discovered by, him. He would like, however, to Observe to critical readers that he does not pretend to be a specialist in the history of every European or other nation mentioned in these pages and consequently must ask the indulgence of those who know more than himself for any mistakes that may have arisen through reference to other historical authorities. But every care has been taken to avoid such errors; and the gratifying reception accorded to the first edition seems to be a sign that interest is being aroused in a very important branch of European history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Europe, Vol. 1 The second and less important group of authorities with which I have busied myself during the work of revision com prises the works of Hiiffer, Vivenot, Beer, Helfert, and others, based on Austrian documents, along with the Austrian docu ments and letters that have been published by Vivenot. The last-named writer is himself a partizan, but the material which he has given to the world is most valuable. The mystery in which the Austrian Government until lately enveloped all its actions caused some of these to be described as worse than they really were and I believe that in the First Edition I under estimated the bias of Prussian and north-german writers. Where I have seen reasons to alter any statements, I have done so without reserve, as it appears to me childish for any one who attempts to write history to cling to an Opinion after the balance of evidence seems to be against it. The publication of the second volume of this work has been delayed by the revision of the first; but I hope that it will appear before many months more. I must express my obligations to Mr. Oscar Browning, a fellow-labourer in the same field, who not only furnished me with various corrections, but placed his own lectures at my disposal; and to Mr. Alfred Kingston, whose unfailing kindness and courtesy make so great a difference to those whose work lies in the department of the Record Otfice which is under his care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe 1789-1920 The author has attempted to write an account of Eu rope since the French Revolution. The past few years have added much and brought considerable alteration in perspective. To people now living the epoch since 1789 is the most important and interesting in the history of mankind. It began with a revolution whose effects are not yet all measured; it ended with another whose consequences can scarcely yet even be guessed at. It was ushered in and completed by devastating wars which altered and may alter Europe for many generations. It was a period of mournful failures and mistakes, but it witnessed more progress than any epoch preceding. It was a period when for the first time the mass of the people got education, and some political power - which still they are learning to use. In the latter part of the period, amidst the infinite complexity of modern life, there was slowly unfolded a mighty sequence of things, ever more ominous and dread ful, like the prologue to some ancient tragedy, or music which forebodes doom approaching, until at last a catas trophe came which threatened to engulf civilization. As this book begins at the end of an old era, so it concludes with the ending of an era which already begins to seem old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe in the Nineteenth Century: An Outline History This book was written in order to provide students and general readers with a short survey of the History of Europe in the Nineteenth Century. The plan on which the book was based has given rise to some discussion as to the best way of writing European History. Professor Hearnshaw, in his M win Currents of European History, after quoting the preface to the first edition, concluded in favour Of the more usual method, which he has himself followed in his own work, but most Of the reviewers of this book expressed their agree ment with the method here adopted. Experience Of teach ing the subject for several years has convinced me that the student is most likely to Obtain an intelligent grasp of European History when each country is treated, as far as possible, as a separate entity, although due recognition must be paid to the working of forces which have affected the destinies of all. I recognize, however, that there is ample room for both methods, nor is there any necessity for adopting one to the exclusion Of the other.
