Abstract: The purpose of this research study is to explore first graders' understanding of parental involvement in a rural high school, to investigate students' feeling and attitude towards their parents' participation in high school education, to understand rural students' expectation of parent-teacher collaboration, and further to examine potential differences caused by gender, degree of parental involvement, and level of academic performance. Qualitative data was collected by means of individual interviews and questionnaires among first-grade students in a rural high school in Heilongjiang Province. The research involves 12 interview participants and 115 students for questionnaires. After transcribing verbally all the individual interviews, both line-by-line coding and software N-Vivo were utilized to analyze transcriptions in order to generate main codes and themes to describe students' understanding and perception and further explore differences across individual interview participants. Questionnaire data was entered into Excel program to create figures supporting findings of interviews. Findings show that rural high school students understand parental involvement as interactions involving parents, teachers and students in four aspects- material, supportive, communicative and environmental. Effective communication, initiation of providing supports, good relationship, and comfortable environment were highlighted in students' expectations. Secondly, the feelings of confident, proud, warm, happy, relax, pressure, and distrust were related by students to their parents' various practices of involvement in high school education. Moreover, students identified three different attitudes towards parental involvement: positive, negative, and dependent. It was found that students' attitude towards the communicative parental involvement was highly depended on the content and the frequency. Besides, students tend to express their neutral attitude towards activities that were not implemented in the high school such as participation in school decision making and parent-teacher association. Thirdly, academic scores and motivation of study were discovered to be affected by parents' involvement. Parent involvement with positive feeling and positive attitude were more likely to be related to positive effects on academic outcomes by students. The research suggests a three-way communication among parents, teachers and students at school and in the community. Findings imply that it is necessary for rural high schools and rural parents to work together with students in the establishment of home-school cooperation. Students' reaction and expectation provide valuable implications for practices of parental involvement in rural high school. Individual differences are also recommended to be taken into considerations in the practices. Abstract: This study examines the differential patterns of access to higher education of students from rural areas in transition from a planned to a market economy. In respect to college access, the research argues that market reforms have reproduced the advantages for students from the cadre''s and the professional''s families while simultaneously creating new opportunities for the children of the new arising economic elite. Yet, it has performed less for traditional peasant families whose children still fail to gain access to college in proportions higher than the size of the population. Based on the literature, this research places a special emphasis on how economic and cultural resources become the main influence on rural students? college access. The process dimension -- how families from different social backgrounds within rural society involve themselves in the schooling of their children and how this contributes to inequality of college access within rural society, are investigated. This research unpacks this process by examining the school involvement experiences of parents in Zong, a county located in the province of Anhui. Parental involvement is conceptualized in terms of how economic and cultural resources are converted to social capital as part of family strategies within the increasingly stratified social context of rural China. The research identifies the consequences of activating different types of social networks within family and community, and also between family and school to facilitate this process by gaining advantages in access to college. Household interviews and field notes were used as the main methods of data collection with a range of parents and teachers involved in this ethnographic study. The data analysis suggests that state, schools and teachers provide few formal and routine channels for rural parents to become involved in schooling. This raises the importance of family strategic initiatives to employ interpersonal social networks (guanxi) within family, community and between school and family. Parents from cadres and professional backgrounds are capable of maintaining these social networks that are useful for their children''s chances of entering higher education. Their counterparts from the new economic elites? backgrounds have developed the means to capitalize upon their families economic and cultural resources by converting them into social capital that creates advantages in college access for their children. Peasants, however, rely heavily on teachers and relatives in education and are substantially marginalized from those important interpersonal social networks of capital conversion. Although this research found the structure constrains interpersonal social network of peasant families, it also highlights the agency of parents from different families. For example, in some cases it found, that peasants actively use their kinships to create chances for school involvement to potentially improve the chances of their children''s college access. This research is one of the first empirical studies to inquire about the mechanism of capital conversion in affecting higher education opportunities in the post-socialist era, which will help to re-evaluate the influence of market reforms over rural education system in China. In China, over 61 million rural children are left behind with other caregivers when one or both parents have to migrate to urban areas to work. A meta-analysis of 106 empirical studies reveals that left-behind children in rural China are generally more disadvantaged compared with non-left-behind children, in regard to psychological adjustment, behavioral health, school-related outcomes, child safety, and other protective outcomes. However, children's exposure to victimization, as a particular child well-being outcome, has not been fully investigated. Further, the parenting practices of caregivers and the influence on children when one or both parents are absent in family lives are unclear. This research was designed to examine the rates of child victimization and poly-victimization among rural children in China in the preceding year, and investigate the association between the caregiver's parenting practice and the child's well-being. In this cross-sectional study, a questionnaire survey was successfully conducted among 793 rural children aged from 10 to 16 in the Sichuan Province of China. The Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire (JVQ) was used as the measure for child victimization. The results demonstrate a high prevalence of victimization exposure among rural children, and a trend was observed in which children's victimization experiences increased as the degree of parental absence increased (from the presence of two biological parents, to parental migration and parental separation and divorce). Through logistic regression analyses, this study also found that certain demographic characteristics (being a boy and at a younger age) were associated with child victimization. Child victimization experiences increase the likelihood of depression among rural children. The results showed that grandparents were significantly involved in raising left-behind children and other rural children and they played a protective role in children's growth. Caregivers' parenting practices had a significant effect on rural children's well-being. A close child-caregiver relationship and positive parenting/involvement were associated with greater resilience in children and decreased child depression. Negative discipline and deficient monitoring from caregivers were risk factors associated with a range of violence against children. This study is among the first to examine a full range of child victimization experiences in rural China, and focuses on the left-behind children phenomenon in particular. The findings enriched our theoretical understanding of the social capital within families as they illustrated that a caregiver's positive parenting practices and close child-caregiver relationship can compensate for the absence of parents to some extent. This study highlights the need for child protection in rural China, and family and parenting support for the caregivers of rural children should be emphasized in policy and services. Human Rights Watch urges the Chinese government to ensure that all Tibetan children can learn in and use Tibetan, to end policies that erode access to mother tongue education, and to end repression of peaceful activism in support of language rights.
