Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-thirds of Shakespeare?s plays have trial scenes, and many deal specifically with lawyers, courts, judges, and points of law. Daniel Kornstein, a practicing attorney, looks at the legal issues and aspects of Shakespeare?s plays and finds fascinating parallels with many legal and social questions of the present day. The Elizabethan age was as litigious as our own, and Shakespeare was very familiar with the language and procedures of the courts. Kill All the Lawyers? examines the ways in which Shakespeare used the law for dramatic effect and incorporated the passion for justice into his great tragedies and comedies and considers the modern legal relevance of his work. ø This is a ground-breaking study in the field of literature and the law, ambitious and suggestive of the value of both our literary and our legal inheritance.

Book excerpt: Samantha Adams leaves the West Coast to return home to Atlanta and a cushy job as a reporter for the Journal Constitution. She didn't think Atlanta had changed that much, but maybe it had if they thought she was stupid enough to think the corruption of rural sheriffs wasn't worth investigating. When a distinguished attorney is found dead in a backwoods ravine, the sheriff rules it as an accident. Samantha doesn't buy that explanation and delves into a scandal of dirty money and adultery that stretches from Atlanta's society salons to the saloons of the good old boys. It was a treacherous setup that killed an honest attorney and it might just do the same to a stubborn lady reporter.

Abraham Lincoln, who practiced law for nearly twenty-five years, would likely not have been allowed to practice today. Without a law degree from an American Bar Association–sanctioned institution, a would-be lawyer is allowed to practice law in only a few states. ABA regulations also prevent even licensed lawyers who work for firms that are not owned and managed by lawyers from providing legal services. At the same time, a slate of government policies has increased the demand for lawyers' services. Basic economics suggests that those entry barriers and restrictions combined with government-induced demand for lawyers will continue to drive the price of legal services even higher. Clifford Winston, Robert Crandall, and Vikram Maheshri argue that these increased costs cannot be economically justified. They create significant social costs, hamper innovation, misallocate the nation's labor resources, and create socially perverse incentives. In the end, attorneys support inefficient policies that preserve and enhance their own wealth, to the detriment of the general population. To fix this situation, the authors propose a novel solution: deregulation of the legal profession. Lowering the barriers to entry will force lawyers to compete more intensely with each other and to face competition from nonlawyers and firms that are not owned and managed by lawyers. The book provides a much-needed analysis of why legal costs are so high and how they can be reduced without sacrificing the quality of legal services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is part of Shakespeare's extraordinary contribution to our culture that, through his dramas based on English history, he played a unique part in forming our view of ourselves and our nationhood. From King John, in which through Magna Carta the king's absolute power was first limited and the people's freedoms assured, to--almost in his own lifetime--Henry VIII, Shakespeare wrote a series of ten plays portraying the course of history. It represents almost one third of his entire dramatic output. The overarching theme of these plays is the vital importance of the sovereign's legitimacy if the nation is to be stable. They cover revolutionary times and events--the deposition and murder of Richard II, the Wars of the Roses, the usurping of the throne by Richard III--but they always affirm the principle that a legitimate king, circumscribed by an agreed constituion, is the only proper guarantee of the nation's liberties. There are many other ways in which Shakespeare's patriotism has become definitive. In Henry V's St. Crispin's Day speech to the troops before Agincourt, for example, or John of gaunt's 'scepter'd isle' speech, a sense of Englishness is expressed which still lives in English minds today. The E;izabethan's pride in nationhood was perfectly embodied by Shakespeare, but the poetry of it transcends its own time. In this edition the history plays are brought together with a large group of illustrations which echo and amplify their themes. Gloriously vivid images of England's story are presented here, putting the great plays in a magnificent setting.

Book excerpt: More than four centuries have passed since Shakespeare wrote his glorious plays, and it is little wonder that the meaning of many of the references in them escapes modern audiences. That's a shame, because they are packed with cryptic allusions to the fascinating people, dramatic events, juicy gossip, lurid scandals, gripping court battles, treacherous conspiracies and outrageous acts of insolence he encountered during his lifetime. To know these background stories is to understand and enjoy his works so much more. In Secret Will, Paul Chapman peels back the curtain to reveal the real Shakespeare and the world that lies hidden behind those quill-scratched pages. He does so by examining key passages from the plays and then asking searching questions about how they relate to the tempestuous times in which he lived. Why, for instance, does A Midsummer Night's Dream contain clear references to the illicit love affair between Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley? How might one of the biggest earthquakes in the history of the British Isles have inspired intriguing lines in Romeo and Juliet? Has Shakespeare immortalised as Ophelia a young woman named Katherine Hamlett, who drowned when he was young? How is a speech in Hamlet connected to the brazen abduction of an Elizabethan schoolboy?Does Shakespeare pour out the raw grief he feels over the death of his young son in heartbreaking lines in King John? Should his most famous stage direction - 'Exit, pursued by a bear' - actually read 'Exit, pursued by a polar bear'? Is he teasing us with a veiled clue to the identity of the mysterious 'Dark Lady' of his desires in Twelfth Night? What do his plays tell us about London's sleazy sex industry, with its legions of prostitutes known as Winchester Geese? Why was the famous Globe theatre threatened by a courtroom drama alleging it was built using stolen timbers, and what led to it burning down? Did a rancorous legal battle between three feuding sisters over their senile father's estate inspire the towering tragedy that is King Lear? And what in the world was the dancing horse? These, and many more such questions, are answered in Secret Will. As well as being a fascinating work of biography, Secret Will has the flavour of a detective saga with all its hints and clues. Links to quotes from Shakespeare's works make the book a gripping page turner for both the aficionado and casual reader alike. 'All the world's a stage, ' Shakespeare once wrote. Secret Will reveals the astonishing story of how he really did put his world on the stage. Readers of this book may never watch a play by the Bard in same way again.
