Book Synopsis Measuring Corruption by : Arthur Shacklock
Download or read book Measuring Corruption written by Arthur Shacklock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advance of an increasingly globalized market, the opportunities for, and scale of, corruption is growing. The size of corporations and their wealth relative to nations provides the resources for corrupt practices. The liberalization of international financial markets makes transferring and hiding the proceeds of corruption easier. Moves towards privatization in East and West are providing once-only incentives for corruption on an unprecedented scale, as officials not only deal with the income of the state, but with its assets as well. In this book, Transparency International's (TI) world-renowned 'Corruption Perception Index' (CPI) and 'Bribery Perception Index' (BPI) are explained and examined by a group of experts. They set out to establish to what extent they are reliable measures of corruption and whether a series of surveys can measure changes in corruption and the effectiveness of anti-corruption strategies. The book contains a variety of expert contributions which deal with the complexity, difficulty and potential for measuring corruption as the key to developing effective strategies for combating it.

Book Synopsis A Culture of Corruption by : David Dixon
Download or read book A Culture of Corruption written by David Dixon and published by Hawkins Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor John Braithwaite says of this book "distinctive insights on police corruption seen through the revealing prism of the experience of NSW .... a terrific book ... An outstanding line-up of authors have performed to their usual standard here ... a wonderful asset to the series ... the collection sustains a consistently high standard" History, regulation and culture are key aspects of policing. This book presents essays on them which are based on research papers prepared for the Royal Commission into the New South Wales Police Service by three of Australia's leading police researchers: Janet Chan, David Dixon and Mark Finnane. It concludes with a major reassessment by David Dixon of the Royal Commission and of the reform process in the period since its final Report. In providing critical analyses of history, regulation, culture, and reform, this book contributes significantly to Australian and international policing literature. The book follows a significant example of the Royal Commission on criminal procedure and on criminal justice in England and Wales, whose research papers have been highly valued as contributions to both the reform process and to the academic literature. It is intended as a resource for policy makers and professionals by providing a convenient and critical introduction to the policing literature in Australia and overseas and will be of interest to Australian and international academics, researchers, and students in policing and criminal justice, and public administration more generally. In addition, the final chapter's review of the Royal Commission's Report and of the subsequent reform process is a major contribution to the continuing debate about the future of the New South Wales Police Service.

Book Synopsis The Role of the Solicitor-General by : Gabrielle Appleby
Download or read book The Role of the Solicitor-General written by Gabrielle Appleby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind every government there is an impressive team of hard-working lawyers. In Australia, the Solicitor-General leads that team. A former Attorney-General once said, 'The Solicitor-General is next to the High Court and God.' And yet the role of government lawyers in Australia, and specifically the Solicitor-General as the most senior of government lawyers, is under-theorised and under-studied. The Role of the Solicitor-General: Negotiating Law, Politics and the Public Interest goes behind the scenes of government – drawing from interviews with over 45 government and judicial officials – to uncover the history, theory and practice of the Australian Solicitor-General. The analysis reveals a role that is of fundamental constitutional importance to ensuring both the legality and the integrity of government action, thus contributing to the achievement of rule-of-law ideals. The Solicitor-General also works to defend government action and prosecute government policies in the court, and thus performs an important role as messenger between the political and judicial branches of government. But the Solicitor-General's position, as both an internal integrity check on government and an external warrior for government, gives rise to competing pressures: between the law, politics and the public interest. The office of the Solicitor-General in Australia has evolved many characteristics across the almost two centuries of its history in an attempt to navigate these tensions. These pressures are not unique to the Australian context. The understanding of the Australian position provided by this book is informed by, and will inform, comparative analysis of the role of government lawyers across the world.
