Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of historic churches in Texas is the story of the Anglo-American and European immigrants in Texas. It is the story of the struggle of three cultures trying to coexist in an empty and often hostile land: the Native Americans, the Mexicans, and the immigrants. It is the story of circuit-riding preachers tirelessly, clandestinely crisscrossing Texas, bringing the Protestant word of God to the people in a land where, prior to Texas's independence, only Catholicism was legal. It is the story of a people who successfully fought and won their independence to build a nation. It is the story of Texas. Over the past ten years, my wife and I have visited and photographed almost one thousand historic churches in Texas. We have seen stunningly beautiful stained-glass windows, listened to the rich tones of Texas's largest organ, and prayed in the smallest active Catholic Church in the world. We visited the oldest Polish church in the United States in Panna Maria, lingered with spirits in an abandoned church in Nacogdoches, and were dazzled by the bright colors and designs found in the Catholic Cathedral in Beaumont. In Berlin, we held a silver communion cup donated to the church in 1889, and in San Antonio we touched the sarcophagus where the remains of Alamo heroes William Travis, David Crockett, and James Bowie are said to be kept. The photographs and text, which was jointly written by William and Mary Pamela Schaefer, are attempts to capture the important history and the quiet beauty of the 186 historic Texas churches presented in this book.

Book excerpt: On July 4, 1855, on the fringe of the Texas Cross Timbers frontier, John M. Stephen and George B. Erath completed the survey of the Stephenville city square. Stephenville quickly became a prosperous settlement and a center for cattle raising, cotton production, and most recently dairy production. Styled today as the City of Champions, Cowboy Capital of the World, and the Dairy Capital of Texas, Stephenville has a colorful 155-year history. The evolution from cattle ranching to dairy farming finds delightful expression on the original town square where Moo-laa life-size fiberglass Holstein milk cowcelebrates Stephenvilles agricultural achievements. The Ville has produced football heroes such as 1938 NFL Champion New York Giants fullback Hugh Wolfe and 2010 Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb and rodeo champions Whit Keeney, Tuff Hedeman, and King of the Cowboys Ty Murray. Music celebrities Lee Roy Parnell, Johnny Duncan, Larry Joe Taylor, and Jewel have also called Stephenville home.

This book was released on 2010-10-22 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people realize that marriage is a big transition-that's why premarital counseling has become popular. But what about having a baby? Where is the pre-parental counseling? Childbirth classes describe how to get through labor, delivery, and those first feedings, but this new baby will require the parents to do much more. They will have to renegotiate their time together, their time at work, their leisure, their housework-everything. Without clear guidance, many first time parents may have unreasonable expectations about their new lives. Gleaning the results of 186 surveys and interviews, What They Didn't Expect When They Were Expecting . . . And How They Became Better Parents describes findings such as: * Fifty percent of the couples had at least one unexpected pregnancy.* None of the expectant parents thought they would have conflict over parenting. Nevertheless, all of those parents admitted to some conflict five years later.* Most expectant parents didn't think work would interfere with family life. But five years later, the mothers' #1 complaint was that their husbands worked too much.Additionally, this book provides practical, biblically-based guidance for expectant parents and parents of young children. Some of the topics addressed are:* How parents can take care of their family's needs as well as their own.* Why it's good for moms to get some space from the kids.* How to recognize toxic messages from the workplace and the media; messages that work against a happy family. * Practical techniques for child discipline.* Balancing work and family.* How dads can be equal parenting partners.* Practical techniques for resolving parenting conflicts.* Important information concerning the most appropriate types of childcare. What They Didn't Expect When They Were Expecting and How They Became Better Parents reveals how strengthening your marriage improves your parenting.

Book excerpt: This title from Fleer and Bland is again designed specifically for preachers. Combining essays from top scholars and sermons from respected homileticians, Preaching John's Gospel includes contributors from a wide variety of Mainline and Evangelical denominations who value the role of scripture in faith development and preaching. Developed from the Rochester Sermon Seminar, the book is divided into two parts: The first includes essays on preaching the gospel of John, and is structured around the work of Gail O'Day's guiding essay "Preaching with John: Preaching as an Act of Friendship." The second half of the book consists of ten sermons from specific texts that incorporate the theoretical underpinnings of the book's first section. The essays and sermons are bound together by the same question: How can we draw our congregations into the world John has imagined for us? Contributors include: Gail O'Day, Richard B. Hays, Gregory Stevenson, Thomas H. Olbricht, Tom Boomershine, D'Esta Love, Alyce M. McKenzie, David Fleer, Dave Bland, and others.
