Book Synopsis Discrete Mathematics by : Oscar Levin
Download or read book Discrete Mathematics written by Oscar Levin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note: This is a custom edition of Levin's full Discrete Mathematics text, arranged specifically for use in a discrete math course for future elementary and middle school teachers. (It is NOT a new and updated edition of the main text.)This gentle introduction to discrete mathematics is written for first and second year math majors, especially those who intend to teach. The text began as a set of lecture notes for the discrete mathematics course at the University of Northern Colorado. This course serves both as an introduction to topics in discrete math and as the "introduction to proof" course for math majors. The course is usually taught with a large amount of student inquiry, and this text is written to help facilitate this.Four main topics are covered: counting, sequences, logic, and graph theory. Along the way proofs are introduced, including proofs by contradiction, proofs by induction, and combinatorial proofs. While there are many fine discrete math textbooks available, this text has the following advantages: - It is written to be used in an inquiry rich course.- It is written to be used in a course for future math teachers.- It is open source, with low cost print editions and free electronic editions.
Book Synopsis Discrete Mathematical Structures for Computer Science by : Bernard Kolman
Download or read book Discrete Mathematical Structures for Computer Science written by Bernard Kolman and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1987 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text has been designed as a complete introduction to discrete mathematics, primarily for computer science majors in either a one or two semester course. The topics addressed are of genuine use in computer science, and are presented in a logically coherent fashion. The material has been organized and interrelated to minimize the mass of definitions and the abstraction of some of the theory. For example, relations and directed graphs are treated as two aspects of the same mathematical idea. Whenever possible each new idea uses previously encountered material, and then developed in such a way that it simplifies the more complex ideas that follow.

Book Synopsis Classic Set Theory by : D.C. Goldrei
Download or read book Classic Set Theory written by D.C. Goldrei and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for undergraduate students of set theory, Classic Set Theory presents a modern perspective of the classic work of Georg Cantor and Richard Dedekin and their immediate successors. This includes:The definition of the real numbers in terms of rational numbers and ultimately in terms of natural numbersDefining natural numbers in terms of setsThe potential paradoxes in set theoryThe Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms for set theoryThe axiom of choiceThe arithmetic of ordered setsCantor's two sorts of transfinite number - cardinals and ordinals - and the arithmetic of these. The book is designed for students studying on their own, without access to lecturers and other reading, along the lines of the internationally renowned courses produced by the Open University. There are thus a large number of exercises within the main body of the text designed to help students engage with the subject, many of which have full teaching solutions. In addition, there are a number of exercises without answers so students studying under the guidance of a tutor may be assessed.Classic Set Theory gives students sufficient grounding in a rigorous approach to the revolutionary results of set theory as well as pleasure in being able to tackle significant problems that arise from the theory.

Book Synopsis A Spiral Workbook for Discrete Mathematics by : Harris Kwong
Download or read book A Spiral Workbook for Discrete Mathematics written by Harris Kwong and published by Open SUNY Textbooks. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Spiral Workbook for Discrete Mathematics covers the standard topics in a sophomore-level course in discrete mathematics: logic, sets, proof techniques, basic number theory, functions, relations, and elementary combinatorics, with an emphasis on motivation. The text explains and claries the unwritten conventions in mathematics, and guides the students through a detailed discussion on how a proof is revised from its draft to a nal polished form. Hands-on exercises help students understand a concept soon after learning it. The text adopts a spiral approach: many topics are revisited multiple times, sometimes from a dierent perspective or at a higher level of complexity, in order to slowly develop the student's problem-solving and writing skills.
Book Synopsis Notes on Set Theory by : Yiannis Moschovakis
Download or read book Notes on Set Theory written by Yiannis Moschovakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What this book is about. The theory of sets is a vibrant, exciting math ematical theory, with its own basic notions, fundamental results and deep open problems, and with significant applications to other mathematical theories. At the same time, axiomatic set theory is often viewed as a foun dation ofmathematics: it is alleged that all mathematical objects are sets, and their properties can be derived from the relatively few and elegant axioms about sets. Nothing so simple-minded can be quite true, but there is little doubt that in standard, current mathematical practice, "making a notion precise" is essentially synonymous with "defining it in set theory. " Set theory is the official language of mathematics, just as mathematics is the official language of science. Like most authors of elementary, introductory books about sets, I have tried to do justice to both aspects of the subject. From straight set theory, these Notes cover the basic facts about "ab stract sets," including the Axiom of Choice, transfinite recursion, and car dinal and ordinal numbers. Somewhat less common is the inclusion of a chapter on "pointsets" which focuses on results of interest to analysts and introduces the reader to the Continuum Problem, central to set theory from the very beginning.
Book Synopsis Elements of Set Theory by : Herbert B. Enderton
Download or read book Elements of Set Theory written by Herbert B. Enderton and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1977-05-23 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an introductory undergraduate textbook in set theory. In mathematics these days, essentially everything is a set. Some knowledge of set theory is necessary part of the background everyone needs for further study of mathematics. It is also possible to study set theory for its own interest--it is a subject with intruiging results anout simple objects. This book starts with material that nobody can do without. There is no end to what can be learned of set theory, but here is a beginning.

Download or read book Topology written by K. Kuratowski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology, Volume I deals with topology and covers topics ranging from operations in logic and set theory to Cartesian products, mappings, and orderings. Cardinal and ordinal numbers are also discussed, along with topological, metric, and complete spaces. Great use is made of closure algebra. Comprised of three chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on general topological spaces as well as their specialized aspects, including regular, completely regular, and normal spaces. Fundamental notions such as base, subbase, cover, and continuous mapping, are considered, together with operations such as the exponential topology and quotient topology. The next chapter is devoted to the study of metric spaces, starting with more general spaces, having the limit as its primitive notion. The space is assumed to be metric separable, and this includes problems of cardinality and dimension. Dimension theory and the theory of Borei sets, Baire functions, and related topics are also discussed. The final chapter is about complete spaces and includes problems of general function theory which can be expressed in topological terms. The book includes two appendices, one on applications of topology to mathematical logics and another to functional analysis. This monograph will be helpful to students and practitioners of algebra and mathematics.
