Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Political Economy, for the Use of Schools and Families The first principles of Political Econo my are truisms which a child may under stand, and which children should therefore be taught. In the last century they were among the Speculations of the learned; they have now become the heritage of the nursery; and the only difficulty in teach ing them in after life arises from a suspicion excited by their very simplicity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Political Economy This book has been prepared for use in High Schools and Academies. In writing its pages, I have been well aware that the object sought is the most difficult at which an economist can aim. Whether this effort to reach the minds of pupils of fifteen, sixteen or seventeen years has been successful, will only be learned on actual trial. In preparing a text-book for students in the period of life indicated, I have not thought it necessary to make the work childish. It is no "Primer of Political Economy" which is here offered; but a substantial course of study in this vitally important subject. I can only hope that it will be found that those for whom it has been designed will be able to follow that course to their own satisfaction and with good results. In adapting the tone of discussion to younger readers than those for whom I have heretofore written, it has not seemed to me desirable to avoid words as long as are necessary fully to carry the meaning intended. In a treatise on political economy written in "words of two syllables," the author must avoid questions of prime importance, or else he will be driven to roundabout forms of expression and to highly artificial phrases. It is not the length of words, but obscurity or confusion in the mind of the writer, which will make a treatise on political economy difficult to youthful readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles Polit Political Economy: Concisely Presented for the Use of Classes in High Schools and Academies From several quarters, there came a call for a concise compend of the principles of Political Economy, which could be used as a text-book for advanced classes in high schools and academies. In this little book, the author has attempted to respond to that call. He has not tried to make a book for children, nor to make the science easy for youth of more maturity; but he has endeavored simply and clearly, in as few words as possi ble, to present the subject for the study of persons who have learned something of the power of language, and have been trained to think and reason for themselves. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Economy Designed for Use in Catholic Colleges, High Schools and Academies The purpose of this book is to present a general view of Political Economy with its various topics and problems, so as to enable the student and the general reader to understand the political and social questions that form matter of daily discussion. A special feature of the work is to show the Catholic doctrine wherever the subjects enter into or touch on the domain of Ethics. No particular effort has been made to bring in Catholic dogma or teaching. When the subject naturally introduces Catholic principles, they have been dwelt upon with the detail that has been thought necessary. Free use has been made of the numerous works on Economics already published. It would be impossible to enumerate all the authors who have been a help in the writing of these pages. Where immediate assistance has been found, credit is given to the sources, as far as possible. The book is the result of many years' teaching in the classroom, and no little credit is due to the intelligent and critical audiences the author has had during the time he taught the subject at Holy Cross College. No attempt has been made to pass judgment on all the various points that come up for discussion. It is not believed that a book of this nature should take sides on all open subjects that may appeal differently to different individuals. The book is designed to reach the minds of young people yet in a formative state, and its purpose is not to incline their opinion towards either side of disputable questions. The exposition of the principles of a science is one thing, the full practical application of each of those principles to actual cases is another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutes of Economics: A Succinct d104book of Political Economy for the Use of Classes in Colleges, High Schools and Academies General, national, or cosmic wealth is not merely the summed possessions1 of individuals and mercantile corporations. Immaterial2 wealth and public property must be reckoned in, and either titles or the things to which they entitle omitted.3 Valid titles held by per sons in one land to values in another are, however, part of the first land's wealth; but all such rights have to be excluded from an inventory of the world's wealth. In estimating general wealth the test of exchange4 value has but very limited application. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Sense, or First Steps in Political Economy, for the Use of Families and Normal Classes, and of Pupils in District, Elementary and Grammar Schools: Being a Popular Introduction to the Most Important Truths Regarding Labor and Capital This work is published, chiefly, in the hope of its having some influence towards the introduction of the teaching of moral and economical science in our schools. It is also intended to help all persons, including children, even without the aid of a teacher, to acquire some knowledge of the most important truths of those sciences. It will, it is hoped, be impossible for any person, after reading this little work, to question the practicability of imparting a competent knowledge of morals and of political economy even to young children. The circumstances which gave occasion to the work furnish additional evidence of this fact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Economy for High Schools and Academies This work is the result of twenty-five years of experience in teaching the subject in the University of Pennsylvania, in the Ogontz School for Young Ladies, in the Central High School of Philadelphia, and in University Extension courses delivered in Philadelphia and the adjacent towns and cities. In this prolonged practice I have aimed at acquiring clearness and conciseness, without coming down to twaddle and commonplace. My experience at Ogontz has been of especial value to me in this respect, as it was there that I learned to adjust teaching to the understanding of younger students, without insulting their intelligence by "talking down" to them. That lesson I found just as useful in addressing the more miscellaneous audiences, young and old, trained and untrained, which University Extension work brings together. The book presents the views of Political Economy which are held by the American or National School of List and Carey. I leave it to be judged whether these or the rival doctrines of the English or Orthodox School - whether as originally taught, or as modified by what is called the Historical School - are most in harmony with the experience of mankind and the needs of our own country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Political Economy: Hints to Students and Teachers The interest which the public now manifests in economic studies led me to put the material of my lectures into a general form, in order that they might assist inquirers in any part of the country. No special knowledge has, therefore, been demanded of the reader by way of prep aration for the substance of what I have intro duced into this volume. By avoiding, as far as possible, all technical language, I have sought to make the inquiry useful to any general read er of intelligence who may be interested to know how to study political economy. But that which I have most at heart is the exten sion of instruction in political economy in all schools and colleges, and the improvement in methods of teaching the subject. I need hardly say that I shall be glad if these pages call out any suggestions by which these two objects may be furthered.
