Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in American History In this text I have told the story of America as I think it ought to be presented to beginners. Since children are always interested in the lives of the great, I have treated the subject on its biographical side. The story centers around the men who have been leaders in American life. But the book is more than a mere series of bio graphies; it is in a true sense a history of our country's growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Our Country's History The extension of the study of United States History the lower grades of our schools has suggested the need of a class-book fitted to their wants. Of histories which the child may read by the mother's knee there is no lack; but this is not what is required for school study, which must not only convey impressions, but impart a certain amount of available knowledge. In the present manual, the author has sought to supply this want. In doing so, he has aimed at two things as desirable: - The first is, to bring out to prominent view the salient points of our country's history, and such only. In so great a mass of details, selection was necessary; for when thousands of facts are put before the child's mind, and everything is made equally important, it simply results that everything becomes equally unimportant. Hence the author has endeavored to apply the principles of historical perspective to his treatment, - to subordinate minutiæ of date and place and number and circumstance, and bring to the foreground prominent and vital facts. The second thing the author has aimed at is, to be simple in the mode of presentation without falling into the prevalent sin of children's histories, to wit, silliness in point of matter. Of dates, names and facts plays only a small part in promoting citizenship, which should be the primary object of history, we have endeavored at least in this book to connect the boys and girls with the great currents that explain and indicate the trend of our country's development. To enable the children to under stand our great achievements, institutions and problems of the present in the light of the past is to enlist their interest in history, to foster patriotism, to make more acute their sense of judgment and to inspire them with a higher degree of civic duty. Hence, in the selection, arrangement and discussion of facts we have kept constantly in mind their bearing on our life and institutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Country Every Child Can Read The story of this great work is called the His tory of the United States. This story you have before you in the book you now hold. You do not need to sit and dream how the wonderful work of building our noble nation was done, for you can read it all here in language simple enough for the youngest Of you to understand. Here you are told how white men came over the seas and found beyond the waves a land none of them had ever seen before. You are told how they settled on these shores, cut down the trees and built villages and towns, fought with the red men and drove them back, and made themselves homes in the midst of fertile fields. You are told how others came, how they spread wider and wider over the land, how log houses grew into mansions, and vil lages into cities, and how at length they fought for and gained their liberty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in the History of the United States: Compiled for the Use of Common Schools Since so much has been said and done for the diffusion of knowledge among the people of this country, and so generally and generously has each of the states provided the means for imparting public instruction, we are safe in presuming that every child, between the ages of five and fifteen years, either goes to school or may go. If this be so, then we affirm that every child in the United States should learn something of the history of his own country before leaving school. He should have imprinted on his mind a vivid outline of the story of his native land. The history of America is fruitful in interesting incident; and "Young America" should be familiar with his own pedigree, and hold in hallowed remembrance the "times that tried men's souls," - the souls of his fathers, - if he would be honored and respected at home and abroad, and secure for himself a virtuous, happy, and "green old age." Improvement in individual and national virtue is not the least among the advantages to result from the study of history; and no country, ancient or modem, affords examples better adapted to excite indignation against the oppressor, and to cause the heart to glow with the admiration of suffering virtue, than America, both in its early settlement and in its struggles for independence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Builders of Our Country, Vol. 1 OF the narrative forms of history, the biographical has proved by far the most interesting and serviceable for boys and girls of ten or twelve; and experience tells us that for children of this age events in the lives of men must be told in a way that fixes those events by many striking and vivid pictures of each. In the twenty-five biographies here given, representing the most important builders of our country from the year 1000 to the beginnings of the American Revolution, the hero of each has received attention in proportion to the reach of his influence or of that of the group of which he is the central figure. The order of presentation is very nearly chronological, being otherwise only where there is a greater advantage in grouping locally; and, in returning to any region, the reader is referred to what he has already learned of events on the same soil. Thus, there is no confusion in his mind as to either place or time. It is hoped that the present volume will be found ade quate in every respect for the teaching of the elementary history of the period covered. It may be noted that it conforms minutely to the requirements of the Fifth Grade set down in the new Elementary Syllabus of the Department of Education of the State of New York.
