Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A GREAT READ FOR KIDS! In 1891, the first buffalo was purchased for Golden Gate Park, Congress created the U.S. Courts of Appeals, the first woman was admitted to Yale University, American Express issued the first Travellers Checks, Thomas Edison patented the motion picture camera, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published The Song of Hiawatha. It was also the year that Folk Lore and Legends of the North American Indianwas first published by J.B. Lippincott. Folk Lore and Legends of the North American Indian is an exquisite compilation of North American Indian myths and legends as they existed in the late 1880s and early 1890s. These are the stories that were passed from mouth to mouth, teaching stories to help young Native Americans navigate through the uncertain journey of life that lay ahead. J.B. Lippincott gathered the stories from letters transported to him via the recently completed Transcontinental Pacific Railroad. These stories should not become just another page in the ever-increasing forest of the internet; they should not be accessible only with the use of electronic devices. All Americans are invited, especially Native Americans, to keep a copy of this sliver of their history in their bookshelves for their children and their children's children to read and treasure for years to come. This book has been especially republished to raise funds for the American Indian Education Fund, benefitting the education of Native Americans across the United States of America. Winter was the time for the stories around the fire, when the hunt was over and people longed to be “lifted to the fairyland of pure imagination,” as an early twentieth-century Native American has said. This book contains the magic created around the Indian fireside, for readers of all ages. It includes myths of creation, culture myths, nature myths, and beast fables, as well as the legends, personal narratives and historical traditions of thirty North American Indian tribes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, social life in rural Tuscany has centered around the veglia, an evening gathering of family and friends at the hearth. Folklore by the Fireside is a thorough and insightful study of this custom—from the tales, riddles, lullabies, and folk prayers performed as the small children are put to bed to the courtship songs and dances later in the evening to the anti-veglia male gossip, card games, and protest songs originating in the tavern. Alessandro Falassi skillfully correlates the veglia to the rites of passage and family values of an agrarian society. Although the impact of mass media and other factors has tended to weaken the tradition, even today Tuscan children are taught to behave and adolescents are guided along the conventional path to adulthood, courtship, and marriage through veglia folklore. This is the first work to deal systematically with Tuscan folklore from a semiotic and structural viewpoint and to examine the veglia as a means of handing down traditional values. It is important not only for its careful, detailed description but also for its rigorous methodology and theoretical richness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÊIn a large village there lived a noted belle, or Ma-mon-d‡-go-Kwa, who was the admiration of all the young hunters and warriors. She was particularly admired by a young man who, from his good figure and the care he took in his dress, was called the Beau-Man, or Ma-mon-d‡-gin-in-e. This young man had a friend and companion whom he made his confidant. ÒCome,Ó said he one day, in a sportive mood, Òlet us go a-courting to her who is so handsome, perhaps she may fancy one of us.Ó She would, however, listen to neither of them; and when the handsome young man rallied her on the coldness of her air, and made an effort to overcome her indifference, she repulsed him with the greatest contempt, and the young man retired confused and abashed. His sense of pride was deeply wounded, and he was the more piqued because he had been thus treated in the presence of others, and this affair had been noised about in the village, and became the talk of every lodge circle. He was, besides, a very sensitive man, and the incident so preyed upon him that he became moody and at last took to his bed. For days he would lie without uttering a word, with his eyes fixed on vacancy, and taking little or no food. From this state no efforts could rouse him. He felt abashed and dishonoured even in the presence of his own relatives, and no persuasions could induce him to rise, so that when the family prepared to take down the lodge to remove he still kept his bed, and they were compelled to lift it from above his head and leave him upon his skin couch. It was a time of general removal and breaking up of the camp, for it was only a winter hunting-camp, and as the season of the hunt was now over, and spring began to appear, his friends all moved off as by one impulse to the place of their summer village, and in a short time all were gone, and he was left alone. The last person to leave him was his boon companion and cousin, who had been, like him, an admirer of the forest belle. The hunter disregarded even his voice, and as soon as his steps died away on the creaking snow the stillness and solitude of the wilderness reigned around. As soon as all were gone, and he could no longer, by listening, hear the remotest sound of the departing camp, the Beau-Man arose.
