Book excerpt: Margaret is a Kentucky belle, and Rich is a Wyoming cowboy. She has struggled to find direction in her life, while he is still dealing with the fallout from his fractured marriage. In spite of their differing backgrounds, they become fast friends as soon as they meet and are soon working together and sharing an apartment in New York City in late summer of 2001 as they try to put their lives back on track. Together, they run the Firehouse, a small but thriving restaurant in a century-old building a few blocks from Grand Central Station. As they grow closer, the broken pieces of their lives begin to mend. They experience the adventure that living in New York can offer, and the day-to-day lives that they lead are punctuated with the glitz as well as the tragedy that life in the city has to offer. Only time will tell, however, whether they can manage to let go of their pasts in order to allow true healing to start and love to flourish. This novel tells the story of two wanderers brought together by fate as they work to break down the barriers that have kept them apart.

Book excerpt: From the narrow, multi-storied buildings found in bustling cities to the ornate structures that serve small towns across North America, firehouses are architectural testaments to the respect and admiration we show our firefighters. Always designed with function first in mind, a great many firehouses are also beautiful reflections of the stylistic trends dominant at the time of their construction. This beautiful volume offers a tour of vintage firehouses throughout North America, from Western cabin-style examples to impressive Greek Revival edifices, and celebrates the place that firefighters have always held in community life. -- Includes a history of firefighting and traces the development of firehouses, from the bucket brigades of the 1700s to the steam engine-era of the post-Civil War through the introduction of motorized trucks and beyond -- Features informative sidebars on various aspects of firehouse design and firefighting history, including topics like African-American fire companies and the role of horses and how they were housed -- Celebrates the restoration and preservation of vintage firehouses, many of which have been transformed into fire department museums, offices, and even restaurants and hotels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They call it Spanish Harlem or sometimes just El Barrio. But for over a century, East Harlem has been a melting pot of many ethnic groups, including Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban, and Mexican immigrants, as well as Italian, Jewish, and African American communities. Though gentrification is rapidly changing the face of this section of upper Manhattan, it is still full of sites that attest to its rich cultural heritage. Now East Harlem native Christopher Bell takes you on a tour of his beloved neighborhood. He takes you on three separate walking tours, each visiting a different part of East Harlem and each full of stories about its theaters, museums, art spaces, schools, community centers, churches, mosques, and synagogues. You’ll also learn about the famous people who lived in El Barrio, such as actress Cecily Tyson, opera singer Marian Anderson, portrait artist Alice Neel, incomparable poet Julia De Burgos, and King of Latin Music Tito Puente. Lavishly illustrated with over fifty photos, Walking East Harlem points out not only the many architectural and cultural landmarks in the neighborhood but also the historical buildings that have since been demolished. Whether you are a tourist or a resident, this guide will give you a new appreciation for El Barrio’s exciting history, cultural diversity, and continued artistic vibrancy.

Book excerpt: Cover: The only flag that counted in the life of my father Patrick John Dunleavy was the American flag with its forty eight stars. The flag with the harp is not the British one under which my father may have grown up. Rather it is a flag design used at different times to express Irish nationalism. It was created in the United States by a group of Irish volunteers who joined the Mexican side in the U.S.-Mexican war from 1846 to 1848 as the Los San Patricios or Saint Patrick's Battalion. The motto Erin Go Bragh underneath the harp means "Ireland Forever." The current Irish tricolor flag was flown in the Easter Rising in 1916 and officially adopted in 1919 by the Republic during its War of Independence. Photographed by Niall Mackey, the flags are a framed gift from Nora Geraghty, purchased during a Harris Auction sale in Delgany, County Wicklow, Ireland, in the 1960s. Nora thought it belonged in my home nearby, Carriglea, in Greystones, County Wicklow, Ireland.
