This book was released on 1977 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The procurement and testing of a wide range of candidate materials is reported. Improved fire resistant nonmetallic materials were subjected to tests to evaluate their thermal characteristics, such as burn, smoke generation, heat release rate and toxicity. In addition, candidate materials were evaluated for mechanical, physical and aesthetic properties. Other properties considered included safety, comfort, durability and maintainability. The fiscal year 1977 and the projected 1980 cost data were obtained for aircraft seat materials."--NASA technical reports server Web site

Book excerpt: This report provides an overview of the research being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to develop fire safe cabin materials for commercial aircraft. The objective of the Fire-Resistant Materials program is to eliminate burning cabin materials as a cause of death in aircraft accidents. Long-term activities include the synthesis of new, thermally stable, low fuel value organic and inorganic polymer systems. The synthesis effort is supported by fundamental research to understand polymer combustion and fire resistance mechanisms using numerical and analytic modeling and the development of new characterization techniques.

Book excerpt: This report details the research being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to develop fire-safe cabin materials for commercial aircraft; The objective of the Fire-Resistant Materials program is to eliminate burning cabin materials as a cause of death in aircraft accidents. Long-term activities include the synthesis of new, thermally stable, low fuel value organic and inorganic polymer systems. The synthesis effort is supported by fundamental research to understand polymer combustion and fire resistance mechanisms using numerical and analytic modeling and the development of new characterization techniques. Aircraft materials which are targeted for upgraded fire resistance are (1) thermoset resins for interior decorative panels, secondary composites, and adhesives; (2) thermoplastics for decorative facings, telecommunication equipment, passenger service units, molded seat parts, transparencies, and electrical wiring; (3) textile fibers for upholstery, carpets, decorative murals, tapestries; and (4) elastomers/rubber for seat cushions, pillows, and sealants. During the first 2 years of the program (1995- 1996) we have made significant progress in achieving our interim goal of a 50 percent reduction in the heat release rate of cabin materials by 2005 and zero heat release rate cabin materials by 2018 with respect to the 1996 baseline for new aircraft. A previous report, Fire-Resistant Materials: Research Overview, DOT/FAA/AR-97/99, summarizes the background and technical objectives of the program and serves as an introduction to the present document.

Book Synopsis Flammability Testing of Materials Used in Construction, Transport and Mining by : Vivek Apte
Download or read book Flammability Testing of Materials Used in Construction, Transport and Mining written by Vivek Apte and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-31 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers need to be able to test the flammability of the materials they use in buildings and other structures. However, the range of test procedures and regulations in this important area is often confusing. Flammability testing of materials used in construction, transport and mining provides an authoritative guide to current best practice in ensuring safe design. The book begins by defining flammability and the main types of test available. Building on this foundation, a group of chapters then reviews tests for key materials used in buildings and their contents. There are chapters on wood, external cladding and sandwich panels as well as the flammability of walls and ceilings. Tests for furniture fabrics, cables and electrical appliances are also reviewed. A final group of chapters discusses other types of test, particularly in the transport sector, including chapters on flammability testing for railway passenger cars, aircraft, road and rail tunnels. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Flammability testing of materials used in construction, transport and mining is a standard reference for civil and transport engineers in particular. An authoritative guide to best practice in ensuring safe design Defines flammability and the main types of test available A vital reference source for civil and transport engineers
