Download or read book Friendly Fire written by Scott A. Snook and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 14, 1994, two U.S. Air Force F-15 fighters accidentally shot down two U.S. Army Black Hawk Helicopters over Northern Iraq, killing all twenty-six peacekeepers onboard. In response to this disaster the complete array of military and civilian investigative and judicial procedures ran their course. After almost two years of investigation with virtually unlimited resources, no culprit emerged, no bad guy showed himself, no smoking gun was found. This book attempts to make sense of this tragedy--a tragedy that on its surface makes no sense at all. With almost twenty years in uniform and a Ph.D. in organizational behavior, Lieutenant Colonel Snook writes from a unique perspective. A victim of friendly fire himself, he develops individual, group, organizational, and cross-level accounts of the accident and applies a rigorous analysis based on behavioral science theory to account for critical links in the causal chain of events. By explaining separate pieces of the puzzle, and analyzing each at a different level, the author removes much of the mystery surrounding the shootdown. Based on a grounded theory analysis, Snook offers a dynamic, cross-level mechanism he calls "practical drift"--the slow, steady uncoupling of practice from written procedure--to complete his explanation. His conclusion is disturbing. This accident happened because, or perhaps in spite of everyone behaving just the way we would expect them to behave, just the way theory would predict. The shootdown was a normal accident in a highly reliable organization.

You will be there as Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee perish and get incinerated inside their locked Apollo 1 capsule; when Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise didn’t know if they would make it back alive aboard a freezing lunar module on Apollo 13; as Neil and Buzz experienced the euphoria of being the first humans to land on the Moon, while Mike Collins in lunar orbit and an anxious world looked on. You’ll see the same panoramic vistas of the lunar landscape and the beautiful blue marble we call Earth as the astronauts saw. You are taken inside the Challenger Space Shuttle as it caught fire and disintegrated in flight. What seven brave astronauts felt like as they plunged to their deaths in a basically intact crew cockpit. You’ll understand exactly what failed and how it failed on both the Challenger and the ill–fated Columbia space shuttles, and why another seven astronauts aboard the Columbia felt no pain despite their grisly annihilation during reentry.

Download or read book Space Exploration on Film written by Paul Meehan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of several decades, scientific fact has overtaken science fiction as humankind's understanding of the universe has expanded. Mirroring this development, the cinematic depictions of space exploration over the last century have evolved from whimsical sci-fi fantasies to more fact-based portrayals. This book chronologically examines 75 films that depict voyages into outer space and offers the historical, cultural, and scientific context of each. These films range from Georges Melies' fantastical A Trip to the Moon to speculative science fiction works such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Solaris, and Contact, and fact-based accounts of actual space missions as depicted in The Right Stuff, Apollo 13, Salyut 7 and First Man. Each film is analyzed not only in terms of its direction, screenplay, and other cinematic aspects but also its scientific and historical accuracy. The works of acclaimed directors, including Fritz Lang, George Pal, Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, Robert Wise, Ron Howard, Robert Zemeckis, Ridley Scott, and Christopher Nolan, are accorded special attention for their memorable contributions to this vital and evolving subgenre of science fiction film.

Book Synopsis The Twenty-first Century in Space by : Ben Evans
Download or read book The Twenty-first Century in Space written by Ben Evans and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final entry in the History of Human Space Exploration mini-series by Ben Evans continues with an in-depth look at the latter part of the 20th century and the start of the new millennium. Picking up where Partnership in Space left off, the story commemorating the evolution of manned space exploration unfolds in further detail. More than fifty years after Yuri Gagarin’s pioneering journey into space, Evans extends his overview of how that momentous voyage continued through the decades which followed. The Twenty-first Century in Space, the sixth book in the series, explores how the fledgling partnership between the United States and Russia in the 1990s gradually bore fruit and laid the groundwork for today’s International Space Station. The narrative follows the convergence of the Shuttle and Mir programs, together with standalone missions, including servicing the Hubble Space Telescope, many of whose technical and human lessons enabled the first efforts to build the ISS in orbit. The book also looks to the future of developments in the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Korean War Filmography by : Robert J. Lentz
Download or read book Korean War Filmography written by Robert J. Lentz and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean experience changed the way Americans viewed war. The lack of a clear-cut victory inspired filmmakers to try to make sense of fighting another country’s civil war and risking American lives for an unpopular cause. This filmography details more than 90 English-language films. Each entry includes complete cast and credit listings, a plot synopsis, evaluation, review snippets, and notice of video availability. This book places each film in its historical context, assesses the essential truthfulness of each film and evaluates its entertainment value, and discusses how—and why—Korean War films differ from other Hollywood war genres. Four appendices list the films by chronology; production company and studio; level of historical accuracy; and subject and theme. Additional appendices list films with incidental references to the Korean War; documentaries on the Korean War; and South Korean films about the war. Photographs, a bibliography, and an index are included.
Book Synopsis Militarizing Outer Space by : Alexander C.T. Geppert
Download or read book Militarizing Outer Space written by Alexander C.T. Geppert and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Militarizing Outer Space explores the dystopian and destructive dimensions of the Space Age and challenges conventional narratives of a bipolar Cold War rivalry. Concentrating on weapons, warfare and violence, this provocative volume examines real and imagined endeavors of arming the skies and conquering the heavens. The third and final volume in the groundbreaking European Astroculture trilogy, Militarizing Outer Space zooms in on the interplay between security, technopolitics and knowledge from the 1920s through the 1980s. Often hailed as the site of heavenly utopias and otherworldly salvation, outer space transformed from a promised sanctuary to a present threat, where the battles of the future were to be waged. Astroculture proved instrumental in fathoming forms and functions of warfare’s futures past, both on earth and in space. The allure of dominating outer space, the book shows, was neither limited to the early twenty-first century nor to current American space force rhetorics.
