Book excerpt: Analytical procedures to predict the fire endurance of structural wood members have been developed worldwide. This research is reviewed for capability to predict the results of tests in North America and what considerations are necessary to apply the information here. Critical research needs suggested include: (1) Investigation of load levels used in reported tests, and parameters in analyses, for application to North American practice; (2) the effect of lumber grade on wood property response at elevated temperature; and (3) further effort in reliability-based design procedures so that the safety of fire-exposed members and assemblies may be determined.

Book Synopsis Strength Validation and Fire Endurance of Glued-laminated Timber Beams by : Erwin L. Schaffer
Download or read book Strength Validation and Fire Endurance of Glued-laminated Timber Beams written by Erwin L. Schaffer and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A previous paper presented a reliability-based model to predict the strength of glued-laminated timber beams at both room temperature and during fire exposure. This Monte Carlo simulation procedure generates strength and fire endurance (time-to-failure, TTF) data for glued-laminated beams that allow assessment of mean strength and TTF as well as their variability. This paper reports an effort to validate model predictive capability through an independently fabricated set of 21 glued-laminated beams. Based upon the available data for the model input parameters on lumber strength and stiffness, finger-joint strength, and length of laminating lumber between sequential finger joints, the model of beam strength appears acceptable and possibly slightly conservative. Refinements in the beam strength model allow its use for predicting fire endurance. In this case, the fire endurance is measured by the TTF and is defined as the time the beam will support its design load while subjected to fire. The residual strength of the beam is analytically calculated by removing the char layer, plus a finite thickness of weakened wood, from the beam cross section as fire exposure time increases. Employing the input parameters for values of finger-joint strength and lamination grades of Douglas-fir, the fire endurance TTF was analyzed for a 5.12- by 16.50-inch 11-lamination Douglas Fir-Larch beam (24F-V4) carrying full allowable uniform load (47.7 lb/in.). (Three-sided fire exposure was assumed; however, four-sided exposure can also be accommodated.) A simulated random fabrication and analysis of the TTF under fire exposure for 100 beams was performed. The mean TTF was estimated as 35.2 minutes with a coefficient of variation of 13.7 percent. Lateral torsional buckling was never the cause of failure in any of the simulations. The results compared well (within a 65 pct confidence band) with the observations and predictions for timber beams reported by sources in other countries. A simulation for a single glulam beam test in cooperation with the National Forest Products Association was also conducted which predicted the result exactly.

Book Synopsis Fire Design of Steel Structures by : Jean-Marc Franssen
Download or read book Fire Design of Steel Structures written by Jean-Marc Franssen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains and illustrates the rules that are given in the Eurocodes for designing steel structures subjected to fire. After the first introductory chapter, Chapter 2 explains how to calculate the mechanical actions (loads) in the fire situation based on the information given in EN 1990 and EN 1991. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the models which represent the thermal actions created by the fire. Chapter 4 describes the procedures to be used to calculate the temperature of the steelwork from the temperature of the compartment and Chapter 5 shows how the information given in EN 1993-1-2 is used to determine the load bearing capacity of the steel structure. Chapter 6 presents the essential features that characterize the advanced calculation models, for thermal and mechanical response. The methods used to evaluate the fire resistance of bolted and welded connections are described in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 describes a computer program called `Elefir-EN? which is based on the simple calculation model given in the Eurocode and allows designers to quickly and accurately calculate the performance of steel components in the fire situation. Chapter 9 looks at the issues that a designer may be faced with when assessing the fire resistance of a complete building. This is done via a case study and addresses most of the concepts presented in the previous chapters. For this second edition the content has been revised and extended. The book contains some new sections, e.g. a comparison between the simple and the advanced calculation, as well as additional examples.

Book Synopsis PCI Design for Fire Resistance of Precast Prestressed Concrete by : A. H. Gustaferro
Download or read book PCI Design for Fire Resistance of Precast Prestressed Concrete written by A. H. Gustaferro and published by Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. This book was released on 1977 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this manual is to provide an analytical method of evaluating the fire endurance of structures made of precast and prestressed concrete. The manual brings together information from many sources, and presents the data in a convenient form. Example problems illustrate the use of the design aids and principles outlined in the text. In recent years, building officials, architects, and engineers have become increasingly aware of the unreliability of results of fire tests. Through the use of the engineering principles outlined in this manual, a greater degree of reliability in predicting fire endurance of structures or assemblies can be achieved. It is the hope of the PCI Fire Committee that building codes will adopt provisions permitting engineering analyses as the basis for establishing the fire endurance of a structure. Building codes should encourage the use of such engineering analyses by permitting a reduction in the fire rating requirements when such analyses are performed. The Committee feels that this manual represents a landmark contribution to designers, building officials, and insurance underwriters who are concerned with fire safety of buildings. Not only does this manual present a rational design approach for the safety of precast prestressed concrete structures, but also it places precast and prestressed concrete in the forefront of a long overdue frontier -- that of structural design for fire resistance."--Page iii.
