This book was released on 1975-06-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first draft recommendations for the design both of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structural members in regard to fire resistance were presented for discussion at the Sixth FIP Congress held in Prague in 1970 at an open meeting of the FIP Commission on Fire Resistance under the Chairmanship of Professor K. Kordina. These have been subsequently discussed and elaborated at meetings of the Commission in Paris, Brunswick and London and a final draft was agreed at the Seventh FIP Congress held in New York in 1974 for the publication to include both normal dense and lightweight concrete. The inclusion of reinforced concrete has been at the special request of CEB who had expressed a wish for detailed recommendations to be available for inclusion in their next revision of the CEB/FIP International Recommendations for the design of Concrete Structures. The recommendations give detailed advice to the practising engineer on how to design structural elements to withstand the standard fire loads for stated periods which may be prescribed by building authorities on a national scale. The values given are safe values based on the results of research and testing on individual elements in a standard furnace. Analytica! methods of assessment of fire resistance are being developed which take into account the interaction of structural members and these may well lead to further economy. Further investigations of the effects of continuity and end-restraint by the Commission may enable these recommendations to be revised in the future.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this manual is to provide an analytical method of evaluating the fire endurance of structures made of precast and prestressed concrete. The manual brings together information from many sources, and presents the data in a convenient form. Example problems illustrate the use of the design aids and principles outlined in the text. In recent years, building officials, architects, and engineers have become increasingly aware of the unreliability of results of fire tests. Through the use of the engineering principles outlined in this manual, a greater degree of reliability in predicting fire endurance of structures or assemblies can be achieved. It is the hope of the PCI Fire Committee that building codes will adopt provisions permitting engineering analyses as the basis for establishing the fire endurance of a structure. Building codes should encourage the use of such engineering analyses by permitting a reduction in the fire rating requirements when such analyses are performed. The Committee feels that this manual represents a landmark contribution to designers, building officials, and insurance underwriters who are concerned with fire safety of buildings. Not only does this manual present a rational design approach for the safety of precast prestressed concrete structures, but also it places precast and prestressed concrete in the forefront of a long overdue frontier -- that of structural design for fire resistance."--Page iii.

Book excerpt: This book addresses an overall approach presenting comprehensive principles and description of the analysis and design of prestressed concrete members, from its initial design concepts, analysis, to the construction stage. The structural components are analyzed and designed to conform to the requirements of Eurocodes, [that are similar to Indian Standard Codes] followed throughout the world. In order to elaborate on the concept of prestressed concrete, seven different cases are dealt with in this book to add an analytical approach to the subject. The concepts explained are well-supported with the mathematical derivations and problem formulations. Illustrative figures and tables further help in making understanding of the concepts easier. The book serves as a reference for the undergraduate students of civil and structural engineering.

Book excerpt: Concrete is well known to behave efficiently in fire conditions, as it is incombustible, does not emit smoke, and provides good thermal insulation. Furthermore, in reinforced concrete structures, the concrete cover gives a natural protection to the reinforcement, and the size of the sections often delays the heating of the core, thus favouring the fire resistance of the structural members. In addition, concrete structures are often robust and therefore able to accommodate local damage without major consequences to the overall structural integrity. However, past experience with real fires shows that a thorough understanding of concrete behaviour and structural mechanics is still needed to improve the design of R/C structures with respect to fire. The objective of fib Bulletin 46 is to augment the current knowledge about concrete and concrete structures under fire, not only for the design of new structures, but also for the analysis and repair of existing fire-damaged structures. Both structural and materials issues are examined, and the results of the most recent research activities on the structural performance of concrete subjected to fire are reported. Special attention is paid to the indirect actions caused by the restrained thermal deformations and several basic examples show how a local fire influences global structural behaviour. fib Bulletin 46 is intended for use by practicing engineers to improve their understanding of the behaviour of concrete structures in fire and thereby produce better and safer design standards.

Book excerpt: High strength fibre composites (FRPs) have been used with civil structures since the 1980s, mostly in the repair, strengthening and retrofitting of concrete structures. This has attracted considerable research, and the industry has expanded exponentially in the last decade. Design guidelines have been developed by professional organizations in a number of countries including USA, Japan, Europe and China, but until now designers have had no publication which provides practical guidance or accessible coverage of the fundamentals. This book fills this void. It deals with the fundamentals of composites, and basic design principles, and provides step-by-step guidelines for design. Its main theme is the repair and retrofit of un-reinforced, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures using carbon, glass and other high strength fibre composites. In the case of beams, the focus is on their strengthening for flexure and shear or their stiffening. The main interest with columns is the improvement of their ductility; and both strengthening and ductility improvement of un-reinforced structures are covered. Methods for evaluating the strengthened structures are presented. Step by step procedures are set out, including flow charts, for the various structural components, and design examples and practice problems are used to illustrate. As infrastructure ages worldwide, and its demolition and replacement becomes less of an option, the need for repair and retrofit of existing facilities will increase. Besides its audience of design professionals, this book suits graduate and advanced undergraduate students.

Book excerpt: Fire design of concrete structures has emerged in recent years as a high profile subject of great interest to both experts and the public. This has been largely prompted by severe damage to concrete in a number of recent tunnel fires, as well as a considerable amount of research and development that has taken place world-wide. fib Task Group 4.3, "Fire Design of Concrete Structures", therefore took the initiative to develop this bulletin in order to present the results of this international research to a wider group of concrete professionals. The report presents a general brief outline of the effect of fire on both concrete material and concrete structures, with emphasis placed on the important developments of the past few years, namely: (a) the increasing use of high strength concrete (HSC) in buildings, tunnels and bridges; (b) the growing acceptance of the use of performance based fire engineering calculations for the structural analysis and design against fire; (c) the problem of, and solutions to, explosive spalling; and (d) fires in tunnels. This report is not intended to be an exhaustive review of the effect of fire on concrete and concrete structures, nor to present a database of properties at high temperature. Instead, the main aims of this document are to present recent trends and developments, highlight key influencing factors, bring together the disparate but related issues in one short document, highlight the deficiencies in current practice and point to the future. The basic principles of performance based codes and fire engineering are also presented on the assumption that the reader is not a specialist in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to assist in the design for fire resistance of precast prestressed concrete structures. According to the ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1997, fire-resistance-rated precast/prestressed concrete construction may be designed using this manual as an alternative method to what is specified in the 2006 IBC Section 703.3 and the 1997 UBC Section 703.3. Since the 2nd edition, much has been experienced and learned, resulting in the need for updating the manual to its current status. Several parts have been rewritten to clarify the text and some new material has been added, but nothing has been changed that would affect the character of the manual.
