Book excerpt: The study of finite rational matrix groups reduces to the investigation of the maximal finite irreducible matrix groups and their natural lattices, which often turn out to have rather beautiful geometric and arithmetic properties. This book presents a full classification in dimensions up to 23 and with restrictions in dimensions and $p+1$ and $p-1$ for all prime numbers $p$. Nonmaximal finite groups might act on several types of lattices and therefore embed into more than one maximal finite group. This gives rise to a simplicial complex interrelating the maximal finite groups and measuring the complexity of the dimension. Group theory, integral representation theory, arithmetic theory of quadratic forms and algorithmic methods are used.

This book starts with an overview of the basic concepts of the subject, including group characters, representation modules, and the rectangular representation. The succeeding chapters describe the features of representation theory of rings with identity and finite groups. These topics are followed by a discussion of some of the application of the theory of characters, along with some classical theorems. The last chapter deals with the construction of irreducible representations of groups. This book will be of great value to graduate students who wish to acquire some knowledge of representation theory.

Book excerpt: This book contains 22 lectures presented at the final conference of the Ger man research program (Schwerpunktprogramm) Algorithmic Number The ory and Algebra 1991-1997, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemein schaft. The purpose of this research program and of the meeting was to bring together developers of computer algebra software and researchers using com putational methods to gain insight into experimental problems and theoret ical questions in algebra and number theory. The book gives an overview on algorithmic methods and on results ob tained during this period. This includes survey articles on the main research projects within the program: • algorithmic number theory emphasizing class field theory, constructive Galois theory, computational aspects of modular forms and of Drinfeld modules • computational algebraic geometry including real quantifier elimination and real algebraic geometry, and invariant theory of finite groups • computational aspects of presentations and representations of groups, especially finite groups of Lie type and their Heeke algebras, and of the isomorphism problem in group theory. Some of the articles illustrate the current state of computer algebra sys tems and program packages developed with support by the research pro gram, such as KANT and LiDIA for algebraic number theory, SINGULAR, RED LOG and INVAR for commutative algebra and invariant theory respec tively, and GAP, SYSYPHOS and CHEVIE for group theory and representation theory.

Book excerpt: From April 1, 1984 until March 31, 1991 the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has sponsored the project "Representation Theory of Finite Groups and Finite Di mensional Algebras". The proposal for this project was submitted by B. Huppert (Mainz), B. Fischer (Bielefeld), G. Michler (Essen), H. Pahlings (Aachen) and C. M. Ringel (Bielefeld) in order to strengthen the interaction between the different re search areas in representation theory. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has given many research positions and fellowships for young algebraists enabling them to do research at their own uni versities or as visitors at well known research institutions in America, Australia, England and France. The whole project benefitted very much from an extensive exchange programme between German and American scientists sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by the National Science Foundation of the United States. This volume presents lectures given in a final conference and reports by members of the project. It is divided into two parts. The first part contains seven survey articles describing recent advances in different areas of representation theory. These articles do not only concentrate on the work done by the German research groups, but also inform on major developments of the subject at all. The volume omits those topics already treated in book form. In particular, it does not contain a survey on K.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let $p$ be a fixed prime number. Let $G$ denote a finite $p$-perfect group. This book looks at the homotopy type of the $p$-completed classifying space $BG_p$, where $G$ is a finite $p$-perfect group. The author constructs an algebraic analog of the Quillen's ``plus'' construction for differential graded coalgebras. This construction is used to show that given a finite $p$-perfect group $G$, the loop spaces $BG_p$ admits integral homology exponents. Levi gives examples to show that in some cases our bound is best possible. It is shown that in general $B\ast _p$ admits infinitely many non-trivial $k$-invariants. The author presents examples where homotopy exponents exist. Classical constructions in stable homotopy theory are used to show that the stable homotopy groups of these loop spaces also have exponents.

This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first sight, finitely generated abelian groups and canonical forms of matrices appear to have little in common. However, reduction to Smith normal form, named after its originator H.J.S.Smith in 1861, is a matrix version of the Euclidean algorithm and is exactly what the theory requires in both cases. Starting with matrices over the integers, Part 1 of this book provides a measured introduction to such groups: two finitely generated abelian groups are isomorphic if and only if their invariant factor sequences are identical. The analogous theory of matrix similarity over a field is then developed in Part 2 starting with matrices having polynomial entries: two matrices over a field are similar if and only if their rational canonical forms are equal. Under certain conditions each matrix is similar to a diagonal or nearly diagonal matrix, namely its Jordan form. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the elementary properties of rings and fields. Also a knowledge of abstract linear algebra including vector spaces, linear mappings, matrices, bases and dimension is essential, although much of the theory is covered in the text but from a more general standpoint: the role of vector spaces is widened to modules over commutative rings. Based on a lecture course taught by the author for nearly thirty years, the book emphasises algorithmic techniques and features numerous worked examples and exercises with solutions. The early chapters form an ideal second course in algebra for second and third year undergraduates. The later chapters, which cover closely related topics, e.g. field extensions, endomorphism rings, automorphism groups, and variants of the canonical forms, will appeal to more advanced students. The book is a bridge between linear and abstract algebra.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of this definitive and popular book continues to pursue the question: what is the most efficient way to pack a large number of equal spheres in n-dimensional Euclidean space? The authors also examine such related issues as the kissing number problem, the covering problem, the quantizing problem, and the classification of lattices and quadratic forms. There is also a description of the applications of these questions to other areas of mathematics and science such as number theory, coding theory, group theory, analogue-to-digital conversion and data compression, n-dimensional crystallography, dual theory and superstring theory in physics. New and of special interest is a report on some recent developments in the field, and an updated and enlarged supplementary bibliography with over 800 items.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine finite, planar, 3-connected, edge-transitive graphs have been known and studied for many centuries. The infinite, locally finite, planar, 3-connected, edge-transitive graphs can be classified according to the number of their end. The 1-ended graphs in this class were identified by Grünbaum and Shephard; Watkins characterized the 2-ended members. Any remaining graphs in this class must have uncountably may ends. In this work, infinite-ended members of this class are shown to exist. A more detailed classification scheme in terms of the types of Petrie walks in the graphs in this class and the local structure of their automorphism groups is presented.

Book excerpt: In this paper, it is shown that the simple unital C*-algebras arising as inductive limits of sequences of finite direct sums of matrix algebras over [italic capital]C([italic capital]X[subscript italic]i), where [italic capital]X[subscript italic]i are arbitrary variable trees, are classified by K-theoretical and tracial data. This result generalizes the result of George Elliott of the case of [italic capital]X[subscript italic]i = [0, 1]. The added generality is useful in the classification of more general inductive limit C*-algebras.
