Book excerpt: The necessity for a highly accurate simulation scheme of free surface flows is emphasized in various industrial and scientific applications. To obtain an accurate response prediction, mass conservation must be satisfied. Due to a continuously moving fluid domain, however, it is a challenge to maintain the volume of the fluid while calculating the dynamic responses of free surfaces, especially when seeking solutions for long time durations. This thesis describes how the difficulty can be overcome by proper employment of an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method derived from the Reynolds transport theorem to compute unsteady Newtonian flows including fluid interfaces and free surfaces. The proposed method conserves mass very accurately and obtains stable and accurate results with very large solution steps and even coarse meshes. The continuum mechanics equations are formulated, and the Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a 'flow-condition-based interpolation' (FCBI) scheme. The FCBI method uses exponential interpolations derived from the analytical solution of the 1-dimensional advection-diffusion equation. The thesis revisits the 2-dimensional FCBI method with special focus on the application to flow problems in highly nonlinear moving domains with interfaces and free surfaces, and develops an effective 3-D FCBI tetrahedral element for such applications. The newly developed 3-D FCBI solution scheme can solve flow problems of a wide range since it can handle highly nonlinear and unsteady flow conditions, even when large mesh distortions occur. Various example solutions are given to show the effectiveness of the developed solution schemes.

Book excerpt: This monograph is the result of my PhD thesis work in Computational Fluid Dynamics at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology under the supervision of Professor Earll Murman. A new finite element al gorithm is presented for solving the steady Euler equations describing the flow of an inviscid, compressible, ideal gas. This algorithm uses a finite element spatial discretization coupled with a Runge-Kutta time integration to relax to steady state. It is shown that other algorithms, such as finite difference and finite volume methods, can be derived using finite element principles. A higher-order biquadratic approximation is introduced. Several test problems are computed to verify the algorithms. Adaptive gridding in two and three dimensions using quadrilateral and hexahedral elements is developed and verified. Adaptation is shown to provide CPU savings of a factor of 2 to 16, and biquadratic elements are shown to provide potential savings of a factor of 2 to 6. An analysis of the dispersive properties of several discretization methods for the Euler equations is presented, and results allowing the prediction of dispersive errors are obtained. The adaptive algorithm is applied to the solution of several flows in scramjet inlets in two and three dimensions, demonstrat ing some of the varied physics associated with these flows. Some issues in the design and implementation of adaptive finite element algorithms on vector and parallel computers are discussed.

Book excerpt: Two immersed boundary methods (IBM) for the simulation of conjugate heat transfer problems with complex geometries are introduced: a finite element (IFEM) and a finite volume (IFVM) immersed boundary methods are discussed. In the IFEM a projection approach is presented for the coupled system of time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) and energy equation in conjunction with the immersed boundary method for solving fluid flow and heat transfer problems in the presence of rigid objects not represented by the underlying mesh. The IBM allows solving the flow for geometries with complex objects without the need of generating a body-fitted mesh. Dirichlet boundary constraints are satisfied applying a boundary force at the immersed body surface. Using projection and interpolation operators from the fluid volume mesh to the solid surface mesh (i.e., the "immersed" boundary) and vice versa, it is possible to impose the extra constraint to the NSEs as a Lagrange multiplier in a fashion very similar to the effect pressure has on the momentum equations to satisfy the divergence-free constraint. The IFEM approach presented shows third order accuracy in space and second order accuracy in time when the simulation results for the Taylor-Green decaying vortex are compared to the analytical solution. For the IFVM a ghost-cell approach with sharp interface scheme is used to enforce the boundary condition at the fluid/solid interface. The interpolation procedure at the immersed boundary preserves the overall second order accuracy of the base solver. The developed ghost-cell method is applied on a staggered configuration with the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations Revised algorithm. Second order accuracy in space and first order accuracy in time are obtained when the Taylor-Green decaying vortex test case is compared to the IFVM analytical solution. Computations were performed using the IFEM and IFVM approaches for the two-dimensional flow over a backward-facing step, two-dimensional flow past a stationary circular cylinder, three-dimensional flow past a sphere and two and three-dimensional natural convection in an enclosure with/without immersed body. The numerical results obtained with the discussed IFEM and IFVM were compared against other IBMs available in literature and simulations performed with the commercial computational fluid dynamics code STAR-CCM+/V7.04.006. The benchmark test cases showed that the numerical results obtained with the implemented immersed boundary methods are in good agreement with the predictions from STAR-CCM+ and the numerical data from the other IBMs. The immersed boundary method based of finite element approach is numerically more accurate than the IBM based on finite volume discretization. The model is nonlinear and the location of the free surface of the cavity is not known priori. Therefore, an iterative procedure is used to locate the free surface boundary. The employment of a trial-free-boundary approach effectively reduces the fully nonlinear model to a linear one, and the solution at each iteration is obtained by means of the finite element method (FEM). Examples studied were fully cavitating flow past flat plates in a water tunnel. Results are given for pure drag flows past circular and elliptic plates and a lifting flow past a circular plate. Because of the change in flow boundary conditions at the separation edge and the failure of the FEM to resolve these conditions accurately, the ability of the numerical solution to maintain a constant pressure over the entire cavity decreases as the three dimensionality of the free surface increases. However, the present procedure produces absolutely stable iterations and shows no sign of drifting of the free surface. It is found that satisfaction of a tangent separation condition of the free surface from the flat plate body is crucial for the stability of the iterative procedure. Grid refinement in both the streamwise and transverse directions reduces the computational error. While free surface movement between iterations is a useful convergence criterion, a flow-rate balance between upstream and downstream cross-sections appears not to be a good criterion.
