Book excerpt: This book presents the mathematics behind the formulation, approximation, and numerical analysis of contact and friction problems. It also provides a survey of recent developments in the numerical approximation of such problems as well as several remaining unsolved issues. Particular focus is placed on the Signorini problem and on frictionless unilateral contact in small strain. The final chapters cover more complex, applications-oriented problems, such as frictional contact, multi-body contact, and large strain. Finite Element Approximation of Contact and Friction in Elasticity will be a valuable resource for researchers in the area. It may also be of interest to those studying scientific computing and computational mechanics.

Book excerpt: The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of new results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes.

Book excerpt: Many physical systems require the description of mechanical interaction across interfaces if they are to be successfully analyzed. Examples in the engineered world range from the design of prosthetics in biomedical engi neering (e. g. , hip replacements); to characterization of the response and durability of head/disk interfaces in computer magnetic storage devices; to development of pneumatic tires with better handling characteristics and increased longevity in automotive engineering; to description of the adhe sion and/or relative slip between concrete and reinforcing steel in structural engineering. Such mechanical interactions, often called contact/impact in teractions, usually necessitate at minimum the determination of areas over which compressive pressures must act to prevent interpenetration of the mechanical entities involved. Depending on the application, frictional be havior, transient interaction of interfaces with their surroundings (e. g. , in termittent stick/slip), thermo-mechanical coupling, interaction with an in tervening lubricant and/or fluid layer, and damage of the interface (i. e. , wear) may also be featured. When taken together (or even separately!), these features have the effect of making the equations of mechanical evolu tion not only highly nonlinear, but highly nonsmooth as well. While many modern engineering simulation packages possess impressive capabilities in the general area of nonlinear mechanics, it can be contended that methodologies typically utilized for contact interactions are relatively immature in comparison to other components of a nonlinear finite element package, such as large deformation kinematics, inelastic material modeling, nonlinear equation solving, or linear solver technology.

In reality almost every type of motion is related to frictional contact between a moving body and a ground. Moreover, modeling of simple and more complex processes as nailing, cutting, vacuum pressing, movement of machines and their elements, rolling or, finally, a numerical simulation of car crash tests, requires taking contact into account. Therefore, its analysis has been a subject of many research efforts for a long time now. However, it is author’s opinion that there are relatively few efforts related to contact between structural elements, like beams, plates or shells. The purpose of this work is to fill this gap. It concerns the beam-to-beam contact as a specific case of the 3D solids contact. A numerical formulation of frictional contact for beams with two shapes of cross-section is derived. Further, a couple of effective methods for modeling of smooth curves representing beam axes are presented. A part of the book is also devoted to analyze some aspects of thermo-electro-mechanical coupling in contact of thermal and electric conductors. Analyses in every chapter are illustrated with numerical examples showing the performance of derived contact finite elements.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a new hybrid elasticity and finite element method for general non-conforming contact problems. It is an iterative numerical procedure, which has distinct advantage over classical theory of contact since general geometrical and loading profiles with friction can be treated. And over the traditional contact solution approach in finite element method, it eliminates the use of gap elements and therefore the non-linearity in the solution enhancing accuracy and efficiency of the solution. For the two dimensional problems the equations were derived for a triangular pressure element. While for three-dimensional problems, the analytical solution was derived from Boussinesq and Cerruti equations for conical pressure elements, from which a semi-analytical approach to three-dimensional contact problems with friction was evolved to find the extent of the contact area and the loading distribution over this area together with the extent of the stick and slip zones. The linear static finite element method was then used to find the displacements and stresses throughout the two bodies in contact, which were analyzed separately with the knowledge of the area of contact and the traction over such an area. The method was used for non-conforming bodies but it can be extended to include different kinds of contact problems. The basic theory was presented for both two and three-dimensional non-conforming contact problem, together with algorithm, and numerical examples that showed the accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the method.

Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.

Book excerpt: Covers the latest developments in modeling elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problems using the finite element method (FEM) This comprehensive guide introduces readers to a powerful technology being used today in the modeling of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problems. It provides a general framework based on the finite element method (FEM) for dealing with multi-physical problems of complex nature (such as the EHL problem) and is accompanied by a website hosting a user-friendly FEM software for the treatment of EHL problems, based on the methodology described in the book. Finite Element Modeling of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Problems begins with an introduction to both the EHL and FEM fields. It then covers Standard FEM modeling of EHL problems, before going over more advanced techniques that employ model order reduction to allow significant savings in computational overhead. Finally, the book looks at applications that show how the developed modeling framework could be used to accurately predict the performance of EHL contacts in terms of lubricant film thickness, pressure build-up and friction coefficients under different configurations. Finite Element Modeling of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Problems offers in-depth chapter coverage of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication and its FEM Modeling, under Isothermal Newtonian and Generalized-Newtonian conditions with the inclusion of Thermal Effects; Standard FEM Modeling; Advanced FEM Modeling, including Model Order Reduction techniques; and Applications, including Pressure, Film Thickness and Friction Predictions, and Coated EHL. This book: Comprehensively covers the latest technology in modeling EHL problems Focuses on the FEM modeling of EHL problems Incorporates advanced techniques based on model order reduction Covers applications of the method to complex EHL problems Accompanied by a website hosting a user-friendly FEM-based EHL software Finite Element Modeling of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Problems is an ideal book for researchers and graduate students in the field of Tribology.
