Book excerpt: Designing structures using composite materials poses unique challenges due especially to the need for concurrent design of both material and structure. Students are faced with two options: textbooks that teach the theory of advanced mechanics of composites, but lack computational examples of advanced analysis; and books on finite element analysis that may or may not demonstrate very limited applications to composites. But now there is third option that makes the other two obsolete: Ever J. Barbero's Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials. By layering detailed theoretical and conceptual discussions with fully developed examples, this text supplies the missing link between theory and implementation. In-depth discussions cover all of the major aspects of advanced analysis, including three-dimensional effects, viscoelasticity, edge effects, elastic instability, damage, and delamination. More than 50 complete examples using mainly ANSYSTM, but also including some use of MATLABĀ®, demonstrate how to use the concepts to formulate and execute finite element analyses and how to interpret the results in engineering terms. Additionally, the source code for each example is available for download online. Cementing applied computational and analytical experience to a firm foundation of basic concepts and theory, Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials offers a modern, practical, and versatile classroom tool for today's engineering classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite materials have excellent mechanical and thermal properties and are the materials of choice for many applications. Even though, the low inter-laminar mechanical properties and poor impact resistance of fiber reinforced composite materials has limited their use. The study of axial crushing behavior of metal and composite tubes has become an important aspect for the design of crashworthy structures in aircraft and automotive applications. This behavior can be studied using different crushing modes based on different failure criteria. Therefore it is important to have a tool that could simulate the crushing response of the composite tubes under crushing or impact load. This thesis is aimed at the validation of finite element simulation methods for composite tubes using different failure criteria. The crushing behavior and the effect of post-failure parameters on the composite tubes are studied using a finite element solver, LS-Dyna. Three different composite tubes have been chosen for the finite element analysis, which have been crushed under impact loading conditions. Composite material models, from Dyna library, are assigned for the tubes to analyze which material model correlates with the experimental results. The results indicate that the average crushing force for the numerical and experimental results are same except for the peak force, in load-displacement curves. Also, interface elements are modeled between the shell elements for the composite tubes and conducted analysis using cohesive material model. Besides, conducted simulations to determine the effect of geometric parameter like trigger and post-failure parameters like softening reduction factor, maximum effective strain, SLIM which is the factor to determine residual strength and maximum strain on the composite tubes.

Book excerpt: Non-linear analysis methods were adapted and incorporated in a finite element based DIAL code. These methods are necessary to evaluate the global response of a stiffened structure under combined in-plane and out-of-plane loading. These methods include the Arc Length method and target point analysis procedure. A new interface material model was implemented that can model elastic-plastic behavior of the bond adhesive. Direct application of this method is in skin/stiffener interface failure assessment. Addition of the AML (angle minus longitudinal or load) failure procedure and Hasin's failure criteria provides added capability in the failure predictions. Interactive Stiffened Panel Analysis modules were developed as interactive pre-and post-processors. Each module provides the means of performing self-initiated finite elements based analysis of primary structures such as a flat or curved stiffened panel; a corrugated flat sandwich panel; and a curved geodesic fuselage panel. This module brings finite element analysis into the design of composite structures without the requirement for the user to know much about the techniques and procedures needed to actually perform a finite element analysis from scratch. An interactive finite element code was developed to predict bolted joint strength considering material and geometrical non-linearity. The developed method conducts an ultimate strength failure analysis using a set of material degradation models. Dorris, William J. and Hairr, John W. and Huang, Jui-Tien and Ingram, J. Book excerpt: Finite element crash modeling of composite structures is limited by the inability of current commercial crash codes to accurately model delamination growth. Efforts are made to implement and assess delamination modeling techniques using a current finite element crash code, MSC/DYTRAN. Three methods are evaluated, including a straightforward method based on monitoring forces in elements or constraints representing an interface; a cohesive fracture model proposed in the literature; and the virtual crack closure technique commonly used in fracture mechanics. Results are compared with dynamic double cantilever beam test data from the literature. Examples show that it is possible to accurately model delamination propagation in this case. However, the computational demands required for accurate solution are great and reliable property data may not be available to support general crash modeling efforts. Additional examples are modeled including an impact-loaded beam, damage initiation in laminated crushing specimens, and a scaled aircraft subfloor structures in which composite sandwich structures are used as energy-absorbing elements. These examples illustrate some of the difficulties in modeling delamination as part of a finite element crash analysis.Fleming, David C.Langley Research CenterDELAMINATING; MATHEMATICAL MODELS; CRASHES; FRACTURE MECHANICS; DYNAMIC TESTS; COMPOSITE STRUCTURES; AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES; CRUSHING; LAMINATES; TWO DIMENSIONAL MODELS; CRACK OPENING DISPLACEMENT; FINITE ELEMENT METHOD; COMPUTER PROGRAMS; CANTILEVER BEAMS; FUSELAGES

Book excerpt: One of the main objectives of aircraft and automotive manufacturers is related improvement of the crash behaviour of lightweight structures. The absorbed energy is an important parameter for the development of the vehicle passive security concept. An energy absorption device is a system that converts totally or partially kinetic energy into another form of energy during collision, which is required of an ideal energy absorbing material, is to have the capability of dissipating as much energy as possible per unit weight/volume. The increasing demand of composite structures in wide range of engineering applications, structures made from composite materials offers important characteristics such as weight reduction, design flexibility and safety improvement. These composite structures provide higher or equivalent crash resistance as compared to their metallic counterparts and therefore find for its using in crashworthiness applications. Polymer composite materials have been introduced in the automotive industry primarily to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle, which results in energy economy and for better fuel cost. However, the current trend in producing lighter structures puts greater demands on the design of more efficient energy dissipating systems. The present study is essentially motivated by the increasing use of composite conical structures in crashworthiness applications. This study focuses on experimental and finite element investigation of glass fibre/epoxy and carbon fibre/epoxy composite conical shell were carried-out during the slipping of solid cone or composite cone into composite conical shell under radian and axial loading. This study has been divided into two main parts: Quasi-static methods and explicit integration methods (dynamic). These parts have been divided also into two sections concerning the problem solution. The first section is the finite element solution, which deals with composite conical shell in order to quantify the study and the second section is an experimental work. These methods used to improve the specific energy absorbed by crushed composite collapsible conical energy absorber devices were undertaken. LUSAS Finite element analysis software was used for quasi-static method and ANSYS/LS-DYNA finite element software for dynamic explicit integration method were used to develop the models. Shell elements have been selected for the composite cones with the same wall thickness. Glass and carbon fibres have been used for the fabrication process of the specimens. The cone semi angles used were 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 degrees. The cone dimensions were constant for all models as 100 mm height and 76.2 mm of bottom diameter. Load-displacement curve and deformation histories obtained from quasi-static work include the experimental and finite element results. These results obtained to calculate specific energy absorption and volumetric energy absorption. As well as others parameters, such as crush force efficiency, initial failure indicator, strain efficiency and failure modes. The results show that the cone angle, loading condition, fibre orientation and stacking sequence angle affects the load carrying capacity and energy absorption capacity of conical shell. On the other hand, the results obtained from finite element analysis for slipping crushed woven roving glass/epoxy composite conical shell by using the explicit integration methods was presented and discussed. The effects of geometrical on energy absorption characteristic and failure modes are investigated as well as the behaviour of structure subjected to dynamic loading. The kinetic energy and energy absorption capability was calculated and failure modes for non-linear dynamic analysis of structures in three dimension was identified. The load-time history curve and deformation history obtained from dynamic work also presented and discussed. The result show that the cone angle, fibre type and loading condition affect the load carrying capacity and energy absorption capacity of composite conical shell.

Book excerpt: Modern analytical models and their numerical realizations have become powerful tools in nonlinear crash analysis. Crash simulation has to consider advanced nonlinear constitutive equations and sophisticated formulations of the contact problem. The refinement of discretisation and the treatment of geometrical complex structures requires highly developed hardware like the vector processor. Topics discussed are the material modeling of impact loaded composite structures, the main features of an explicit crash code and the results of two calculations simulating the drop test of a B707-section. Finally the possibilities of a specific interface between a crash code based on the finite element method like ANCS and a program like KRASHB5 are outlined in detail. (JES).

Book excerpt: This book is an adventure into the computer analysis of three dimensional composite structures using the finite element method (FEM). It is designed for Universities, for advanced undergraduates, for graduates, for researchers, and for practising engineers in industry. The text advances gradually from the analysis of simple beams to arbitrary anisotropic and composite plates and shells; it treats both linear and nonlinear behavior. Once the basic philosophy of the method is understood, the reader may expand its application and modify the computer programs to suit particular needs. The book arose from four years research at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. We present the theory and computer programs concisely and systematically so that they can be used both for teaching and applications. We have tried to make the book simple and clear, and to show the underlying physical and mathematical ideas. The FEM has been in existence for more than 50 years. One of the authors, John Argyris, invented this technique in World War II in the course of the check on the analysis of the swept back wing of the twin engined Meteor Jet Fighter. In this work, he also consistently applied matrix calculus and introduced triangular membrane elements in conjunction with two new definitions of triangular stresses and strains which are now known as the component and total measures. In fact, he was responsible for the original formulation of the matrix force and displacement methods, the forerunners of the FEM.
