The objective of this study is to evaluate the response of bone, fracture plate, screws and callus at different stages of healing to various applied loads. A three-dimensional, half-symmetric finite element model was developed. The stress and strain states in the assembly were investigated for pure compression, pure tension, twisting moment and combination of compressive and shear forces, which generate a bending moment, simulating getting up from a chair, carrying a suitcase and turning a screw driver. Two types of commonly used fracture plates were compared: 316 stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The results of this research showed that there is less stress shielding of the bone with the titanium alloy plate and screws than with the stainless steel ones. The maximum equivalent von-Mises stress was found to be less in compression and tension than in bending and twisting. The majority of load transfer within the assembly occurred in the screws. For large bending and twisting moments stresses can be higher than the strength of the stainless steel plate. Excessive loading should thus be avoided to prevent possible failure. The research further found that the relative motion between bone and fracture plate was largest during tensile loading.

Download or read book Finite Elements in Fracture Mechanics written by Meinhard Kuna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture mechanics has established itself as an important discipline of growing interest to those working to assess the safety, reliability and service life of engineering structures and materials. In order to calculate the loading situation at cracks and defects, nowadays numerical techniques like finite element method (FEM) have become indispensable tools for a broad range of applications. The present monograph provides an introduction to the essential concepts of fracture mechanics, its main goal being to procure the special techniques for FEM analysis of crack problems, which have to date only been mastered by experts. All kinds of static, dynamic and fatigue fracture problems are treated in two- and three-dimensional elastic and plastic structural components. The usage of the various solution techniques is demonstrated by means of sample problems selected from practical engineering case studies. The primary target group includes graduate students, researchers in academia and engineers in practice.

Book Synopsis Hoppenfeld's Treatment and Rehabilitation of Fractures by : Daniel Horwitz
Download or read book Hoppenfeld's Treatment and Rehabilitation of Fractures written by Daniel Horwitz and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by leading orthopaedists and rehabilitation specialists, the second edition of Hoppenfeld’s Rehabilitation and Treatment of Fractures presents sequential treatment and rehabilitation plans for fractures of the upper extremity, lower extremity, and spine. The book demonstrates how to treat each fracture--from both an orthopaedic and a rehabilitation standpoint--at each stage of healing. Introductory chapters review the fundamentals of fracture management--bone healing, treatment modalities, biomechanics, assistive devices and adaptive equipment, gait, splints and braces, therapeutic exercise and range of motion, and determining when a fracture is healed. Subsequent chapters focus on management of individual fractures. Each chapter on an individual fracture is organized by weekly post fracture time zones, from the day of injury through twelve weeks. For each time zone, the text discusses bone healing, physical examination, dangers, x-rays, weight bearing, range of motion, strength, functional activities, and gait/ambulation.

Download or read book Musculoskeletal Trauma in the Elderly written by Charles Court-Brown and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 1647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trauma in older people aged over 65 is a rapidly growing field within orthopaedics. Up to two thirds of fractures occur as a result of a fall and about one third of all fractures occur in the over-65 population. The aim of this comprehensive new text is to present the epidemiology and management of all musculoskeletal trauma that occurs in the elderly. The book deals with the assessment and treatment of medical comorbidities, complications, and the role of orthogeriatric care. The focus of the book is on the practical management of fractures although soft tissue injuries and dislocations are also discussed. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the field, contributors are drawn from orthopaedics and orthogeriatrics on both sides of the Atlantic. The book is intended for all surgeons and physicians involved in the treatment of trauma in the elderly, and it will be relevant to trainees and as well as experienced practitioners.
