Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and Applied Mechanics covers the proceedings of the 16th International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, held at the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark on August 19-25, 1984. The contributors consider the significant advances in the thriving field of mechanics. This book is composed of 21 chapters, and begins with an overview of space research contributions in understanding fluid media mechanics. This topic is followed by discussions on some aspects and fundamentals of mechanics, such as chaos, computer application, resonant phenomena, adiabaticity, and nonlinear acoustics. The following chapters explore the various applications of theoretical and applied mechanics, including in marine structures, oil recovery, and ice and snow mechanics. This book also deals with nonlinear wave motion, hydrodynamic systems, ocean wave spectra, and Helmholtz concept. The remaining chapters look into the issues of steady water bifurcation, concept of anisotropic soils, and flow visualization. This book is of great value to physicists and research workers who wish to expand their knowledge in mechanics.

Book excerpt: Acoustical engineers, researchers, architects, and designers need a comprehensive, single-volume reference that provides quick and convenient access to important information, answers and questions on a broad spectrum of topics, and helps solve the toughest problems in acoustical design and engineering. The Handbook of Acoustics meets that need. It offers concise coverage of the science and engineering of acoustics and vibration. In more than 100 clearly written chapters, experts from around the world share their knowledge and expertise in topics ranging from basic aerodynamics and jet noise to acoustical signal processing, and from the interaction of fluid motion and sound to infrasound, ultrasonics, and quantum acoustics. Topics covered include: * General linear acoustics * Nonlinear acoustics and cavitation * Aeroacoustics and atmospheric sound * Mechanical vibrations and shock * Statistical methods in acoustics * Architectural acoustics * Physiological acoustics * Underwater sound * Ultrasonics, quantum acoustics, and physical aspects of sound * Noise: its effects and control * Acoustical signal processing * Psychological acoustics * Speech communication * Music and musical acoustics * Acoustical measurements and instrumentation * Transducers The Handbook of Acoustics belongs on the reference shelf of every engineer, architect, research scientist, or designer with a professional interest in the propagation, control, transmission, and effects of sound.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to present a clear and systematic account of the mathematical methods of wave phenomena in solids, gases, and water that will be readily accessible to physicists and engineers. The emphasis is on developing the necessary mathematical techniques, and on showing how these mathematical concepts can be effective in unifying the physics of wave propagation in a variety of physical settings: sound and shock waves in gases, water waves, and stress waves in solids. Nonlinear effects and asymptotic phenomena will be discussed. Wave propagation in continuous media (solid, liquid, or gas) has as its foundation the three basic conservation laws of physics: conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, which will be described in various sections of the book in their proper physical setting. These conservation laws are expressed either in the Lagrangian or the Eulerian representation depending on whether the boundaries are relatively fixed or moving. In any case, these laws of physics allow us to derive the "field equations" which are expressed as systems of partial differential equations. For wave propagation phenomena these equations are said to be "hyperbolic" and, in general, nonlinear in the sense of being "quasi linear" . We therefore attempt to determine the properties of a system of "quasi linear hyperbolic" partial differential equations which will allow us to calculate the displacement, velocity fields, etc.

The water region is of finite depth and the interface between the region and the air is given by the graph of a function. We assume the flow to be incompressible and neglect the effects of surface tension. However we assume the flow to be rotational so that the vorticity distribution is a given function depending on the values of the stream function of the flow. The presence of vorticity increases the complexity of the problem and also leads to a wider class of solutions. First we study unidirectional waves with vorticity and verify the Benjamin-Lighthill conjecture for flows whose Bernoulli constant is close to the critical one. For this purpose it is shown that every wave, whose slope is bounded by a fixed constant, is either a Stokes or a solitary wave. It is proved that the whole set of these waves is uniquely parametrised (up to translation) by the flow force which varies between its values for the supercritical and subcritical shear flows of constant depth. We also study large-amplitude unidirectional waves for which we prove bounds for the free-surface profile and for Bernoulli’s constant. Second, we consider small-amplitude waves over flows with counter currents. Such flows admit layers, where the fluid flows in different directions. In this case we prove that the initial nonlinear free-boundary problem can be reduced to a finite-dimensional Hamiltonian system with a stable equilibrium point corresponding to a uniform stream. As an application of this result, we prove the existence of non-symmetric wave profiles. Furthermore, using a different method, we prove the existence of periodic waves with an arbitrary number of crests per period.

Book excerpt: For advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in atmospheric, oceanic, and climate science, Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate Dynamics is an introductory textbook on the circulations of the atmosphere and ocean and their interaction, with an emphasis on global scales. It will give students a good grasp of what the atmosphere and oceans look like on the large-scale and why they look that way. The role of the oceans in climate and paleoclimate is also discussed. The combination of observations, theory and accompanying illustrative laboratory experiments sets this text apart by making it accessible to students with no prior training in meteorology or oceanography. * Written at a mathematical level that is appealing for undergraduates and beginning graduate students * Provides a useful educational tool through a combination of observations and laboratory demonstrations which can be viewed over the web * Contains instructions on how to reproduce the simple but informative laboratory experiments * Includes copious problems (with sample answers) to help students learn the material.

Book excerpt: The Technical Report gives a complete analysis of the theory of propagation of a finite amplitude ultrasonic wave in a nonlinear crystal of hexagonal symmetry along the symmetry axis and along any direction in the basal plane. From the theory we conclude that at least four of the ten third order elastic constants can be evaluated from harmonic generation measurements in the appropriate directions in hexagonal crystals.
