Book excerpt: Painting "without color" has long held a fascination for artists. In this striking and original book, the authors explore how and why artists from the 15th century to the present have chosen to paint in black, white, and shades of gray. Sometimes artists used trompe l'oeil monochromatic effects to represent other media, such as sculpture, prints, or photography; others have consciously limited their palette as a means of re-focusing the viewer's attention, while contemporary artists such as Gerhard Richter and Bridget Riley have often found inspiration in pushing black and white to its limits, and in new directions. The authors trace the history of this art form, from the symbolism of sacred images in medieval church ritual - epitomized in Netherlandish painting from the 15th century onwards by Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck - to the modern era and the work of artists such as Josef Albers and Ellsworth Kelly.

Book excerpt: This anthology brings together over 25 pieces of writing by, and interviews with, the German painter, Georg Baselitz. Known for his rebellious approach to Abstract Expressionism, here Baselitz's discusses the impression his paintings convey, the act of painting, his biography and much more. The artist's own writings cover topics as varied as his first trip abroad to other painters that he considers to be great. The texts shift between these personal pieces - most of which have never been published before - to interviews with Baselitz and a variety of critics and art historians. These conversations present a different voice as he responds to careful and critical questions about his work. Many of the writings and interviews are available in English for the first time. A unique perspective on Georg Baselitz, this collection offers a personal insight on the artist and his relationship to painting.

Book Synopsis Painting as Model by : Yve-Alain Bois
Download or read book Painting as Model written by Yve-Alain Bois and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1993-05-04 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by both structuralism and poststructuralism, these essays by art critic and historian Yve Alain Bois seek to redefine the status of theory in modernist critical discourse. Warning against the uncritical adoption of theoretical fashions and equally against the a priori rejection of all theory, Bois argues that theory is best employed in response to the specific demands of a critical problem. The essays lucidly demonstrate the uses of various theoretical approaches in conjunction with close reading of both paintings and texts.
