It's a collection of stories and reflections designed to help you discover the elusive, yet most important, part of parenting: the heart. There are many great books available to readers, but there are also too many books that are not healthy reading material. Speaking for myself, I can confirm this to be true, for many books can have adverse effects on us. A Variation of Inspiration consists of true-to-life Bible-related material. Some are based on personal experience, some on family experience, but all are related to the true Scripture. Each poem has a story to explain what inspired the writing of each poem. Each story has a Bible verse related to the story. Each poem, story, and verse has a picture that relates to the topic of the poem. It is the author's hope and prayer that you will find something in this book that will be an inspiration to you.

Book excerpt: Fresh, funny, and fearless, The Middle Finger Project is a point-by-point primer on how to get unstuck, slay imposter syndrome, trust in your own worth and ability, and become a strong, capable, wonderful, weird, brilliant, ballsy, unfuckwithable YOU. "Don't worry, this isn't a book about God, nor is it a book about Ryan Gosling (second in command). But it is a book about authority and becoming your own." --Ash Ambirge After a string of dead-end jobs and a death in the family, Ash Ambirge was down to her last $26 and sleeping in a Kmart parking lot when she faced the truth: No one was coming to her rescue. It was up to her to appoint herself. That night led to what eventually became a six-figure freelance career as a sought-after marketing and copywriting consultant, all while sipping coffee from her front porch in Costa Rica. She then launched The Middle Finger Project, a blog and online course hub, which has provided tens of thousands of young "women who disobey" with the tools and mindset to give everyone else's expectations the finger and get on your own path to happiness, wealth, independence, and adventure. In her first book, Ash draws on her unconventional personal story to offer a fun, bracing, and occasionally potty-mouthed manifesto for the transformative power of radical self-reliance. Employing the signature wit and wordsmithing she's used to build an avid following, she offers paradigm-shifting advice along the lines of: • The best feeling in the world is knowing who you are and what you're capable of doing. • Life circumstances are not life sentences. If a Scranton girl who grew up in a trailer park can make it, so can you. • What you believe about yourself will either murder your chances or save your life. So why not believe something good? • You don't need a high-ranking job title to be authorized to contribute. You just need to contribute. • Be your own authority. Authority only works as long as you trust that someone smarter than you is making the rules. • The way you become a force is by being the most radically real version of yourself that you can be. • You only have 12 fucks a day to give, so use them wisely.

Book excerpt: “Easily the best biography of the great Nelson Algren, and an extraordinary book in its own right.” —Blake Bailey, author of Cheever: A Life For a time, Nelson Algren was America’s most famous author, lauded by the likes of Richard Wright and Ernest Hemingway. But at the height of his career, he abandoned fiction and fell into obscurity. Colin Asher’s sublime biography of Algren unravels the enigma of his disappearance, explores the richness of his novels and nonfiction writing, and explains how a rash creative decision may have led his enemies to denounce him to the FBI during the Red Scare. Asher tells Algren’s story in rich, novelistic detail, including his long-term affair with Simone de Beauvoir and the emotional breakdown that nearly cost him his life. Drawing from interviews, archival correspondence, and Algren’s 886-page FBI file, Never a Lovely So Real portrays Algren as a dramatic iconoclast and reclaims him as a towering literary figure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of signs in American literature and culture. It is mainly about electric signs, but also deals with non-electric signs and related phenomena, such as movie sets. The 'sign' is considered in both the architectural and semiotic senses of the word. It is argued that the drama and spectacle of the electric sign called attention to the semiotic implications of the 'sign.' In fiction, poetry, and commentary, the electric SIGN became a 'sign' of manifold meanings that this book explores: a sign of the city, a sign of America, a sign of the twentieth century, a sign of modernism, a sign of postmodernism, a sign of noir, a sign of naturalism, a sign of the beats, a sign of signs systems (the Bible to Broadway), a sign of tropes (the Great White way to the neon jungle), a sign of the writers themselves, a sign of the sign itself. If Moby Dick is the great American novel, then it is also the great American novel about signs, as the prologue maintains. The chapters that follow demonstrate that the sign is indeed a 'sign' of American literature. After the electric sign was invented, it influenced Stephen Crane to become a nightlight impressionist and Theodore Dreiser to make the 'fire sign' his metaphor for the city. An actual Broadway sign might have inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. In Manhattan Transfer and U.S.A., John Dos Passos portrayed America as just a spectacular sign. William Faulkner's electric signs are full of sound and fury signifying modernity. The Last Tycoon was a sign of Fitzgerald's decline. The signs of noir can be traced to Poe's 'The Man of the Crowd.' Absence flickers in the neons of Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles. The death of God haunts the neon wilderness of Nelson Algren. Hitler's 'empire' was an non-intentional parody of Nathanael West's California. The beats reinvented Times Square in their own image. Jack Kerouac's search for the center of Saturday night was a quest for transcendence. This book will interest readers who want to learn more about the city, the history of advertising, electric lighting, nightlife, architecture, and semiotics. In contrast to other cultural studies, however, Signs of the Signs is primarily a work of literary criticism. Lovers of literary light will appreciate this book the most.

Book excerpt: An excerpt, "Miraculous power emanates when wisdom and moral strength and moral discipline determine words and actions that resonate with harmony of eternal morals as opposed to immediate temptations of egoic desire. Miraculous power emanates when we comfort or care for someone in need. Miraculous power of forgiveness can transform a life. Miraculous power of hope can generate a million possibilities. Miraculous power of honesty can cleanse guilt. Miraculous power of atonement can eliminate karmic debt. While miraculous power of faith can move mountains, we possess the miraculous inability to understand that faith is not “one size fits all.” There are many paths to the one Truth. Whether Christianity or Islam, religious faith can cause violence and strife among us. Miraculous power of reason can acknowledge that felicity and adversity are the keys of the same piano from which the harmony of life is comprised, and one Composer wrote the symphony. A miracle of empathy can bestow freedom on those who need understanding and knowledge upon those who endeavor to understand. A miracle of affectionate love can transform lover and loved. A physical expression of love can fashion a portal (conception) through which an infinite soul may once again choose to incarnate in order to experience the awe and mystery of life on this small planet amidst the backwaters of the universe. All these powers to be sure, rest within the Chalice of Miracles, the Holy Grail of our bodies that cradles conscience and nurtures within us a creative impulse that impels us toward Divinity."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I lost my four-year-old granddaughter due to a car accident, my world came to a complete stop. My friends gave me books on grief, but nothing I read helped me, so I decided to write this book. It is raw and tells everything I went through, with no filter. I wanted to bring the process of grieving out into the open and not dance around topics that others don’t want to discuss, such as anger, severe depression, and thoughts of suicide. Grieving is a series of missteps, misinterpretations, and good intentions gone awry. This book is about not only grieving but also healing, which is sometimes just as difficult. Letting go of guilt and other burdens we sometimes carry can be daunting, but if we try really hard, we can find our way through to the light at the end of the tunnel.
