Book Synopsis Protocols in Lichenology by : Ilse Kranner
Download or read book Protocols in Lichenology written by Ilse Kranner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an intricate association between a fungus and one or more green algae or cyanobacteria, lichens are one of the most successful examples of symbiosis. These fascinating organisms survive extreme desiccation and temperatures. They are adapted to a great variety of habitats, from deserts to intertidal zones, from tropical rain forests to the peaks of the Himalayas and to circumpolar ecosystems. Lichens are extremely efficient accumulators of atmospherically deposited pollutants, and are therefore widely used to monitor environmental pollution. Their wide range of secondary products show pharmaceutically interesting fungicidal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Lichens are extremely difficult to culture. This manual provides well-tested tissue culture protocols, protocols for studying lichen ultrastructure, (eco)physiology, primary and secondary compounds, and for using lichens as bioindicators.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Lichenology by : Margalith Galun
Download or read book Handbook of Lichenology written by Margalith Galun and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988: This easy-to-read handbook provides a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on lichens. The structure of lichens and their dual nature is explained, as well as the physiology of interaction of the symbionts. The way lichens reproduce and their ecology is included, with methods for cultivating them and their isolated symbionts. Extremely useful as a text of lichenology, this handbook will benefit students of lichenology and allied fields, those interested in symbiotic associations and ecology, and teachers of biology, botany, and ecology courses.
Book Synopsis Physiological Plant Ecology III by : O. L. Lange
Download or read book Physiological Plant Ecology III written by O. L. Lange and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: O.L. LANGE, P.S. NOBEL, C.B. OSMOND, and H. ZIEGLER Growth, development and reproductive success of individual plants depend on the interaction, within tolerance limits, of the factors in the physical, chemical and biological environment. The first two volumes of this series addressed fea tures of the physical environment (Vol. 12A) and the special responses of land plants as they relate to water use and carbon dioxide assimilation (Vol. 12B). In this volume we consider specific aspects of the chemical and biological envi ronment, and whereas the previous volumes were primarily concerned with the atmospheric interactions, our emphasis here shifts very much to the soil. This complex medium for plant growth was briefly reviewed in Chapter 17, Volume 12A. Since it is difficult to determine the precise physical and chemical interactions in the soil, it is even more difficult to determine the important biological interactions among organisms. Nevertheless there is growing aware ness of the significance of these interactions and their effects on physiological processes in the individual plant.

Download or read book Gold written by Boyle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GOLD: History and Genesis of Deposits is the product of an effort by the Society of Economic Geologists to publish materials that will expand knowl edge concerning timely, specific topics important to the study of economic geology and to economic geologists. A volume on gold was selected for a general review-type publication because of the importance of the gold mining industry in the 1980s. The officers and council of the Society of Economic Geologists authorized the preparation of this book on gold in 1981, and Dr. Robert W. Boyle was selected as its author. Dr. Boyle has extensive experience in the study of gold deposits. He has an international reputation and a broad interest and understanding of the gold mining industry, the origin of gold deposits, and the history of gold as a metal and ore from prehistoric times to recent. Dr. Boyle uses important publications on gold deposits as source materials to document the various pathways of geological thought over time to introduce the reader to modern concepts. The book contains a wealth of information concerning gold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 47 species of Parmelina are revised on the world level. Two sections are recognized: section Parmelina with 30 species widely distributed in temperate to tropical montane regions and section Myelochroa with 17 terpene-containing species concentrated in eastern and southern Asia. The genus is most closely related to Parmotrema Massalongo. Five new species, P. crassata Hale, P. degelii Hale, P. indica Hale, P. rhytidodes Hale, and P. schindleri Hale, are described, and six new combinations proposed, P. amagiensis (Asahina) Hale, P. damaziana (Zahlbruckner) Hale, P. endoleuca (Taylor) Hale, P. irrugans (Nylander) Hale, P. jamesii (Hale) Hale, and P. pastillifera (Harmand) Hale. New combinations are also made for Hypotrachyna baguioensis (Hale) Hale and Parmotrema nylanderi (Lynge) Hale.

Book Synopsis A Monograph of the Lichen Genus Bulbothrix Hale (Parmeliaceae) by : Mason E. Hale
Download or read book A Monograph of the Lichen Genus Bulbothrix Hale (Parmeliaceae) written by Mason E. Hale and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world-level revision is given for the 29 species of Bulbothrix, a generic segregate of Parmelia characterized by marginal bulbate cilia and production of atranorin in the upper cortex. The genus is primarily tropical in distribution and best developed in secondary forests. The main center of speciation is Brazil with 14 species, and the genus is also well represented in Africa. The New World species have a high frequency of depsides and orcinol depsidones, whereas the Old World species usually contain & beta;-orcinol depsidones. One new species, B. klementii Hale, and one new combination, B. goebelii (Zenker) Hale, are proposed.
