It features splendid works by some of the greatest draftsmen of all time, among them Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Guercino, Canaletto, Giovanni Battista and Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Jacques Callot, Claude Lorrain, Francois Boucher, Maurice Quentin de La Tour, Thomas Gainsborough, John Hoppner, Peter Lely and George Romney as well as others by lesser-known and unidentified artists. "The Detroit Institute of Arts acquired its first two drawings in the year of its founding, 1885, both gifts from James E. Scripps, who went on to be one of the great benefactors of the graphic arts division. Among the other leading figures in the history of the drawing collection have been donors John S. Newberry and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Walker as well as director William R. Valentiner, who in 1934 made a now-legendary buying trip to Europe, returning with sixty-nine master drawings acquired with a budget of $4,000." "Italian, French, English, and Spanish Drawings and Watercolors represents the combined efforts of a team of leading specialists in the field of master drawings. They provide for each of 231 sheets: attribution, date, medium, dimensions, inscriptions and annotations, condition, provenance, exhibition history, and published references."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Paul Mellon's Legacy by : John Baskett
Download or read book Paul Mellon's Legacy written by John Baskett and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Mellon (1907--1999) was an unparalleled collector of British art. His collection, now at Yale in the museum and study center he founded to house it, rivals those in Britain’s national museums and is unquestionably the most comprehensive representation of British art held outside of the United Kingdom. This book and the exhibition that it accompanies celebrate the centenary of his birth. Five introductory essays examine Mellon’s extraordinary collecting activity, as well as his role in creating both the Yale Center for British Art and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London as gifts to his alma mater (Yale 1929). A lavishly illustrated catalogue section showcases 148 of the most exquisite and important paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, sculpture, rare books, and manuscript material in the Yale Center’s collection, including major works by Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, John Constable, and J. M. W. Turner.

Book Synopsis Fragmentary Forms by : Freya Gowrley
Download or read book Fragmentary Forms written by Freya Gowrley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated global history of collage from the origins of paper to today While the emergence of collage is frequently placed in the twentieth century when it was a favored medium of modern artists, its earliest beginnings are tied to the invention of paper in China around 200 BCE. Subsequent forms occurred in twelfth-century Japan with illuminated manuscripts that combined calligraphic poetry with torn colored papers. In early modern Europe, collage was used to document and organize herbaria, plant specimens, and other systems of knowledge. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, collage became firmly associated with the expression of intimate relations and familial affections. Fragmentary Forms offers a new, global perspective on one of the world’s oldest and most enduring means of cultural expression, tracing the rich history of collage from its ancient origins to its uses today as a powerful tool for storytelling and explorations of identity. Presenting an expansive approach to collage and the history of art, Freya Gowrley explores what happens when overlapping fragmentary forms are in conversation with one another. She looks at everything from volumes of pilgrims’ religious relics and Victorian seaweed albums to modernist papiers collés by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and quilts by Faith Ringgold exploring African-American identity. Gowrley examines the work of anonymous and unknown artists whose names have been lost to history, either by accident or through exclusion. Featuring hundreds of beautiful images, Fragmentary Forms demonstrates how the use of found objects is an important characteristic of this unique art form and shows how collage is an inclusive medium that has given voice to marginalized communities and artists across centuries and cultures.
