Book excerpt: This report provides insights into the nature and characteristics of domestic violence homicide in Australia. It presents information on the deaths of people who were killed by their current or former intimate partner following a history of domestic violence, from between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2014, drawing on the combined data of state and territory-based death review teams. Together, these teams and death review mechanisms have formed the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Network to improve knowledge and policy for addressing such deaths. This report provides data on: gender distribution, histories of domestic violence preceding the homicide, relationship characteristics and separation, and family law proceedings, Domestic Violence Orders, and court outcomes. In this period, there were 152 intimate partner homicides in Australia which followed an identifiable history of domestic violence: the majority involved a male killing his female partner, where the man had also been the woman's primary abuser. Of the homicides where a female killing her male partner, over half concerned a victim killing her abuser.

Interviews and focus group discussions were held with 17 women regarding the sources of support they contacted, experience with services, and what they felt worked well or could be improved. Despite the diversity of participants, they all highlighted that women's needs change over time, and that responses need to ensure that victims feel protected, not punished, and that perpetrators are held to account. The report concludes with recommendations for the ACT Government.

Nancarrow re-conceptualises typologies of violence and provides a means of understanding and explaining female use of violence without undermining the hard-won gains of the women’s movement. It does, however, argue for a paradigm shift, which has implications for every aspect of the system we have built to stop men’s violence against women (law, police policy and practice, counselling and advocacy for victims, and interventions for those who perpetrate violence). The book is based on quantitative and qualitative research and explores the nature of Indigenous intimate partner violence and the types of violence that domestic violence law sought to address.
