Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The partisan divide in the United States has widened to a chasm. Legislators vote along party lines and rarely cross the aisle. Political polarization is personal, too—and it is making us miserable. Surveys show that Americans have become more fearful and hateful of supporters of the opposing political party and imagine that they hold much more extreme views than they actually do. We have cordoned ourselves off: we prefer to date and marry those with similar opinions and are less willing to spend time with people on the other side. How can we loosen the grip of this toxic polarization and start working on our most pressing problems? The Way Out offers an escape from this morass. The social psychologist Peter T. Coleman explores how conflict resolution and complexity science provide guidance for dealing with seemingly intractable political differences. Deploying the concept of attractors in dynamical systems, he explains why we are stuck in this rut as well as the unexpected ways that deeply rooted oppositions can and do change. Coleman meticulously details principles and practices for navigating and healing the difficult divides in our homes, workplaces, and communities, blending compelling personal accounts from his years of working on entrenched conflicts with lessons from leading-edge research. The Way Out is a vital and timely guide to breaking free from the cycle of mutual contempt in order to better our lives, relationships, and country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating a Way Out is meant to help the individual focus on day-to-day encounters by learning to let their spiritual side guide them through the unknown and unexpected events that will occur in a day. Trying to overcome day-to-day stresses is sometimes more than what we are capable of bearing alone. Each of us deals with day-to-day occurrences differently. What may work for one day may not work for the next. I have encountered different types of stressors— physical, mental, and emotional. I tried to physically confront my stressor but found myself more drained and filled with despair because things didn’t turn out like I wanted them to. They would change as the day went on, leaving me with a sense of not knowing what to do next. That’s when I learned that trying to do battle with my illness was not something I could do alone. I needed someone or something to be with me always if I were ever to survive this hurdle in life. One of the best messages I learned was the statement “It’s not by work but by grace.” This statement is confusing at first because everything we learn from a physical point of view teaches that things in life are gained by hard work or chance. But from a spiritual or emotional prospective, that’s not how it works. You are spiritually blessed, which means graced. Or from an emotional standpoint, you give acceptance or receive acceptance, which is a type of grace. That’s why we must let the spiritual part of us deal with our day-to-day activities without our physical interference. We may create a brighter day for ourselves. Sure, you’re asking yourself how we cannot interfere with one’s spiritual self, day in, and day out. The answers to that question can be found in Creating a Way Out by living one day at a time. Understand that creating a way out is not a book on religion. It’s not a book on mental psychology. Creating a Way Out is a day-by-day map of what works for me, and it did work for me. So I give to you Creating a Way Out 365 Days a Year one day at a time. There are several ways to use this book on your travels throughout your adventure in life. • You can use it by opening it page by page like in the normal process of reading. • You can wake up in the morning and, without looking at the page, ask yourself what’s on your mind, open the book to a page without looking at the page number. It will make a reference to your thoughts. • You may have someone tell you something they are struggling with, open the book to a page, and if they are sincere and truly believe it can help, it will. I am sure there are other uses for the book as well. Let the spiritual side in you guide you to the many uses of this book. May you be blessed in so many ways as I have. R. L. Leonard

Book excerpt: A Way Out is her first book that attempts to shed light on the hidden world of abuse. In this book, she exposes a world that was kept hidden and silent for much of her life. She writes with compassion and insight, having lived much of her life in an environment where love was substituted with verbal and physical abuse, first within her immediate family then by choosing a partner who reflected that world. Her compassion for those who have suffered at the hands of loved ones and strangers resonates throughout this book. Through her experiences, she hopes that those who suffer from abuse will find their way out. The author resides with her husband in a quaint New England town where she enjoys entertaining family and friends, taking long walks, immersing herself in prayer, and praising God for the blessings and graces He has bestowed on her.

Book excerpt: After decades of hand-wringing and well-intentioned efforts to improve inner cities, ghettos remain places of degrading poverty with few jobs, much crime, failing schools, and dilapidated housing. Stepping around fruitless arguments over whether or not ghettos are dysfunctional communities that exacerbate poverty, and beyond modest proposals to ameliorate their problems, one of America's leading experts on civil rights gives us a stunning but commonsensical solution: give residents the means to leave. Inner cities, writes Owen Fiss, are structures of subordination. The only way to end the poverty they transmit across generations is to help people move out of them--and into neighborhoods with higher employment rates and decent schools. Based on programs tried successfully in Chicago and elsewhere, Fiss's proposal is for a provocative national policy initiative that would give inner-city residents rent vouchers so they can move to better neighborhoods. This would end at last the informal segregation, by race and income, of our metropolitan regions. Given the government's role in creating and maintaining segregation, Fiss argues, justice demands no less than such sweeping federal action. To sample the heated controversy that Fiss's ideas will ignite, the book includes ten responses from scholars, journalists, and practicing lawyers. Some endorse Fiss's proposal in general terms but take issue with particulars. Others concur with his diagnosis of the problem but argue that his policy response is wrongheaded. Still others accuse Fiss of underestimating the internal strength of inner-city communities as well as the hostility of white suburbs. Fiss's bold views should set off a debate that will help shape urban social policy into the foreseeable future. It is indispensable reading for anyone interested in social justice, domestic policy, or the fate of our cities.

He carefully places rocks around it as the local mango seller rushes past shouting, "Out of the way! Out of the way!" As the tree grows bigger, people and animals traverse the path until it becomes a lane, flowing like a river around the tree— getting out of its way. Over time, the lane becomes a road, and a young man crossing the road with his children remembers the baby tree from long ago. By the time he is an old man, the tree has become a giant. The city traffic continues to rattle past, noisier and busier than ever, but sometimes the great tree works its magic, and people just stop, and listen. In this simple, lyrical story, a wide-spreading tree and a busy road grow simultaneously, even as time passes and the footsteps of people and animals give way to speeding cars, buses and trucks. The illustrations, in pen-and-ink with vibrant blocks of color, have a classic folk-art feel. The author and illustrator, who really do share the same name (except for the last letter!), have always wanted to do a book together. Book excerpt: We are living in a world filled with disappointments, and chaos. It has become quite frequent for people to become afraid of their present state or the future. It is biblical, as in the lives of the children of Israel finding themselves in turmoil and affliction by the hands of Pharaoh. They too were uncertain of their future but did the unthinkable and cried unto the Lord. The Lord heard their cries and sent aid to their rescue. Exodus 3:7:8 states, "And the LORD said: 'I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land . . . flowing with milk and honey.'" This book is made up of fictional stories demonstrating the characteristics of people who have found themselves in various circumstances because of the cares of this life, which can be identified in today's society. Some of them found a way out by their undoubting and unshakeable faith in Jesus, or through another person's Christian journey or witnessing method, while others chose to become trapped, enslaved or victims of their own circumstances. Therefore it can be said, no matter how impossible your circumstances seem, There Is A Way Out! Back Cover Jannet Davy was born in Jamaica, Jannet a single young lady, migrated to Nassau, Bahamas the year 2000. Currently, she is a member of Church of God of Prophecy, where the Senior pastor is Bishop Franklyn Ferguson, she is now serves as one of the assistant Youth directors in the local church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Only Way Out, Katherine Brewer Ball explores the American fascination with the escape story. Brewer Ball argues that escape is a key site for exploring American conceptions of freedom and constraint. Stories of escape are never told just once but become mythic in their episodic iterations, revealing the fantasies and desires of society, the storyteller, and the listener. While white escape narratives have typically been laden with Enlightenment fantasies of redemption where freedom is available to any individual willing to seize it, Brewer Ball explores how Black and queer escape offer forms of radical possibility. Drawing on Black studies, queer theory, and performance studies, she examines a range of works, from nineteenth-century American literature to contemporary queer of color art and writing by contemporary American artists including Wilmer Wilson IV, Tourmaline, Tony Kushner, Junot Díaz, Glenn Ligon, Toshi Reagon, and Sharon Hayes. Throughout, escape emerges as a story not of individuality but of collectivity and entanglement.

Coleman articulates the African American expression of "making a way out of no way" for today's context of globalization, religious pluralism, and sexual diversity. Drawing on womanist religious scholarship and process thought, Coleman describes the symbiotic relationship among God, the ancestors, and humanity that helps to change the world into the just society it ought to be. Making a Way Out of No Way shows us a way of living for justice with God and proposes a communal theology that presents a dynamic way forward for black churches, African traditional religions and grassroots organizations.
