Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of these individuals left a lasting, positive influence in the life of a confused young man. Working at two jobs most of his adult life to keep the rent paid and food on the table and to provide clothing for his family, he and his wife worked together to create a viable home life. Professionally, he served as a firefighter and captain for twenty-seven years for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. About midway between his career, he was instrumental in creating a father son family business, Spacemaker Plumbing Products. While retaining his job with the fire department, with the help of his son, he became a successful business owner, developer, inventor, entrepreneur, and CEO for twenty-one years. He worked tirelessly in developing money-making opportunities and growing the business. Knowing you cannot blame anyone for the outcome of your life, if you do the finger-pointing at others, you will never grow up into adulthood and receive the gratification and knowledge that you are your own person. Thanks to my grandmothers, maternal grandfather, aunts, and uncles for showing me the side of life that could be mine if I worked long and hard enough to achieve the rewards. I hope that some young person who is having a hard life will somehow read this book and come away with even one thought that helps him or her to avoid the mistakes I made in my life. Though the communities mentioned are where the stories occurred, some of the names of the people in the stories have been changed to hide embarrassing situations for individuals still living.

Book excerpt: In barely forty years of life Martin Luther King (1929-1968) distinguished himself as one of the greatest social reformers of modern times: civil rights leader, defender of nonviolence in the struggle of desegregation, champion of the poor, anti-war proponent, and broad-minded visionary of an interrelated world of free people. His many verbal and written communications in the form of sermons, speeches, interviews, letters, essays, and several books are replete with Bible proverbs as «Love your enemies», «He who lives by the sword shall perish by the sword», and «Man does not live by bread alone» as well as folk proverbs as «Time and tide wait for no man», «Last hired, first fired», «No gain without pain», and «Making a way out of no way». He also delighted in citing quotations that have become proverbs, to wit «No man is an island», «All men are created equal», and «No lie can live forever». King recycles these bits of traditional wisdom in various contexts, varying his proverbial messages as he addresses the multifaceted issues of civil rights. His rhetorical prowess is thus informed to a considerable degree by his effective use of his repertoire of proverbs which he frequently uses as leitmotifs or amasses into set pieces of fixed phrases to be employed repeatedly.

Book excerpt: The first part of this guide provides a brief listing of the types of issues students with particular disorders may have in school. It also provides some screening tools or surveys to help parents and educators determine whether the student has handwriting, homework, or sleep issues that will need to be addressed. The three survey forms can be reproduced by teachers who wish to send them home to all parents towards the beginning of the school year. By screening for sleep problems, organizational deficits, and homework issues, teachers may intervene early with necessary accommodations and interventions, thereby preventing a lot of trouble. Parents can also use the forms to provide information to their child's teacher(s). Parents should simply complete the relevant survey and send it in with a note requesting a meeting to discuss the concerns and possible solutions. The second part of this guide provides checklists of accommodations that might be helpful and necessary. The first three checklists address problem areas common to a lot of disorders, i.e., handwriting problems, homework issues, and the need for testing accommodations. Some accommodations in those checklists have qualifiers such as "If tics.... " or "If the student has handwriting rituals" etc. Following the three issue-specific checklists, you will find checklists for a variety of disorders. Some parents and educators may not be familiar with the term Executive Dysfunction. Executive Dysfunction (EDF) is impairment in "getting your act together" (Denckla 2007). Students with EDF have trouble organizing, planning, following multi-step sequences, shifting flexibly, and using feedback, among other deficits. If you have ever been tempted to refer to your child or student as "clueless" (Pruitt, 1995) or "terminally disorganized" (Packer 1995), you will want to take a close look at that checklist.

Don asserts, that God has not forgotten us even when… We face a job loss We go through an unexpected divorce We receive a bad report from the doctor We face the death of a loved one As a beloved songwriter and worship leader, Don Moen is the author of classic songs like “Thank you, Lord” and “God Will Make a Way”— the inspiration for this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a groundbreaking book, Kathryn Grover reconstructs from their own writings the lives of African Americans in Geneva, New York, virtually from its beginning in the 1790s, to the time of the community's first civil rights march in 1965. She weaves together demographic evidence and narratives by black Americans to recount their lives within a white-controlled society. Make a Way Somehow, which reflects the tenor of the gospel song whence it came, is a complete and meaningful history of black Genevans, with a moving focus on the individual experience. The author traces five principal migrations of African Americans to northern cities: the forced migration of slaves from the East and South before 1820; the antebellum fugitive slave farm-to-town movement; the postwar migration of emancipated people; the so-called Great Migration between the two World Wars; and the last movement that began around 1938 and ended in 1960, which was precipitated by the need for workers in large-scale commercial agriculture and the war-mobilization effort. Grover pieces together the lives of generations of African Americans in Geneva and delineates the local system of race relations from the city's social and economic standpoint. Black Genevans were kept at the fringes of society and worked in jobs that were temporary and scarce. While antislavery and suffrage work was common, it represented but a small portion of reform in towns whose broader sentiments opposed racial equality. In a work that spans more than a hundred years, the author establishes a context for understanding both the persistence of a small group of blacks and the transience of a great many others.

He will make a way for His people, even if there seems to be no way. We must play our own role within the realm of possibility, but what is clearly impossible for human beings must be surrendered to Almighty God, because He specializes in impossibilities! He will do great and mighty things through the lives of His people. Glory be to His holy name!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book examines the history of a school of social work as it unfolded over a century of US history when the "separate but equal" doctrine was accepted in both law and custom in the US. The founding of the School was spearheaded by leading scholars and social activists in Atlanta, Georgia as an independent institution of higher learning to prepare black social workers for practice in the black community. Using a historical qualitative research method, data for the book was obtained primarily from the Clark Atlanta University Robert W. Woodruff Research Center that holds the collections of the nation's most well-known HBCUs founded in the city of Atlanta. The evolution of the School is described within the context of time and place, and against the backdrop of changing US social welfare policy, CSWE EPAS standards, and social work professional trends. The content describes consequential events influencing curriculum renewal from its founding in 1920 when Atlanta was described as the most segregated city in the South; to the mid-1900s when it was the leading voice on social work practice in the black community; to the post-civil rights decades of desegregation and CSWE's new requirements on diversity and inclusion that resulted in both costs and benefits for the School. In 2000 the School was renamed to honor former dean Whitney M. Young Jr. And today it is one of three professional schools of Clark Atlanta University and awards the BSW, MSW and Ph.D. social work degree"--
