Book excerpt: The use of alternative performance indicators (APMs) (also known as ‘Non-GAAP’ earnings) is a widespread phenomenon, and the increased reliance on APMs has recently triggered a strong debate among regulators, managers and investors on the nature of these ‘tailored’ earnings and on the economic reasons behind them. On one hand, APMs might reflect managers’ attempt to offer useful information to predict companies’ future sustainable cash-flows and earnings (information hypothesis), while, on the other, the non-standardized nature of these metrics impacts on the comparability of the financial results, and reduces the reliability and the faithful representation of financial information (opportunistic hypothesis). By collecting several theoretical and empirical contributions on APMs, this book provides a number of interesting and useful insights on the economics of APMs and their impact on financial markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the 23 million registered Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that make up 98 per cent of the EU economy. Addressing the high end of SMEs in terms of new models for SME funding and financial reporting, this merged way of looking at SMEs reveals a ‘myopic’ thinking in terms of net present value and (future) cash flows generating short-termism and low risk appetite for business. This is not an accounting issue, but rather a preference toward certain financial tools. A segment of SMEs, the ones that seek new ways of funding possibilities, as well as modern technologies (MTFs listing, blockchain, ICOs, etc.) do require, even without knowing, IFRS for SMEs. This book reveals how market conditions impact the financial performance and sustainability of SMEs and also generate innovative policy interventions and financing strategies for SME integrity and efficiency. The authors frame their arguments in the context of the Capital Markets Union, looking at the Innovation Triangle, SME growth ecosystem and business models. They conclude by advocating for closing the circle of financing and financial reporting for SMEs, while considering if new financial models of financing and financial reporting are good for all the SMEs or only for some. The economy is being shaped by new models of financing and financial reporting. Read this practitioners’ view to understand the current changes and challenges.

Book excerpt: The present book is a collection of studies presented at the 10th International Conference on Finance and Banking which took place at Silesian University - School of Business Administration in Karviná, Czech Republic on October 19 - 20, 2005. All papers presented at the conference have been peer-reviewed and, consequently, the nine best papers that discuss issues corresponding with the book’s focus have been selected by the editors for publication in this book. In spite of the fact that the book is a collection of independent studies it represents a comprehensive and consistent work. All studies (book chapters) are tied together by common references. Through original research, the book will cover various aspects of financial and banking sectors in new EU-member countries, giving a comparison of their development to financial sectors of developed countries. Special attention is paid to prospective integration of the new EU-member countries to the European Economic and Monetary Union and the implications for national economic policies. Generally, the book we are offering gives very deep insight into the financial sector of new EU-member countries written by a very interesting group of authors. It combines young and promising economists with respected researchers living in new as well as in traditional EU countries and working in various ways with the financial sector. The book successfully pulls together theory and actual development of financial sectors in new EU-member countries. Moreover, a rich blend of applied theory and actual practice makes the book attractive for a wide spectrum of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2024 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Essen (BWL II), course: Value Based Controlling and International Accouting, language: English, abstract: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations are increasingly crucial in the corporate world, driven by stakeholder demands for transparency and accountability. Europe is leading this shift with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which mandates comprehensive ESG disclosures. This directive marks a transition from voluntary initiatives to mandatory compliance, requiring companies to integrate sustainability into their core strategies and operations. This study explores the current status of ESG reporting requirements in Europe and their potential impact on corporate reporting. Using a mixed-method approach, the research combines qualitative and quantitative analysis of official documents, academic studies, and industry reports. The evolution of ESG reporting in Europe began with Directive 2013/34/EU, which mandated non-financial disclosures but had limited success. The CSRD, introduced by Directive (EU) 2022/2464, significantly expands the scope of companies required to report, aiming for nearly 75% of EU companies to comply. This expansion aligns with the European Green Deal’s vision of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent. The CSRD mandates sustainability information in official company reports or online, ensuring transparency and accountability through 'Double Materiality'. The CSRD impacts both internal and external reporting. Internally, companies must enhance data collection and analysis, involving management and supervisory bodies in sustainability issues. This requirement extends to the entire value chain, increasing administrative burdens and costs. Externally, transparent ESG reporting can enhance stakeholder trust, attract investments, and improve reputation, though non-compliance risks reputational damage and financial penalties. Despite challenges, effective ESG reporting under the CSRD offers significant benefits, including improved stakeholder relations, access to capital, and opportunities for innovation and growth. The directive’s alignment with international standards like the IFRS Sustainability standards ensures consistent and credible reporting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the words of Ezra Talmor: To deal with European Culture in a Changing World is to deal, in fact, with the reciprocal relation between Politics and Economics on the one hand, and Culture on the other. In an era when economic forces are pushing towards European Economic Unity or towards the Globalisation of National Markets it is rather difficult to demarcate the role of Culture. While the European Narrative may have been written by Monnet, De Gaulle, and Adenauer, the Global Narrative is written by an unknown author or rather by Adam Smithâ (TM)s Invisible Hand. On the one hand the postmodernist claim that the Grand Narrative is dead is given the lie. A Grand Narrative is now being written not by Philosophers but by Managers of Multinationals. The Foucauldian â oeça parleâ (it speaks) is instantiated by the anonymous authors of the Global Narrative. The question to be asked is: What will happen to the rich mosaic of National European Cultures? The answer to this question is not only a matter of National Memory and National Identity, it is also a matter of the sources of cultural creativity. Lâ (TM)Europe de nations may have been the theatre of endless national wars but it was also the cradle of a very rich mosaic of national cultures. The point is: how will creative genius adapt to the two new trends - European Unification and Globalism? This volume brings together essays by leading scholars in a myriad of disciplines, all of which attempt to shed light on these issues. Contributions by: Nicholas Perdikis, Shari L. Boyd, William A Kerr, Sylvia MacPhee, Marcela Cristi, Anu Randveer, Martti Randveer, Viljar Jaamu, Vello Vensel, Anatoly Zotov, Warren Breckman, Douglas Moggach, Malgorzata Bogunia-Borowska, Alexandros Kioupkiolis, Eric W.
