Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, Korea’s financial development has been a tale of liberalization and opening. After the 1997 financial crisis, great strides were made in building a market-oriented financial system through sweeping reforms for deregulation and the opening of financial markets. However, the new system failed to steer the country away from a credit card boom and bust in 2003, a liquidity crisis in 2008, and a run on its savings banks in 2011, and has been severely tested again by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Financial liberalization, clearly, has been no panacea. This study analyzes the deepening of and structural changes in Korea’s financial system since the early 1980s and presents the empirical results of the effects of financial development on economic growth, stability, and the distribution of income. It finds that, contrary to conventional wisdom, financial liberalization has contributed little to fostering the growth and stability of the Korean economy and has exacerbated income distribution problems. Are there any merits in financial liberalization? The authors answer this query through empirical examinations of the theories of finance and growth. They point to a clear need to further improve the efficiency, soundness, and stability of Korean financial institutions and markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis that hit a number of 'miracle' economies of Asia in 1997 shocked the world. Financial Liberalization and the Asian Crisis rejects conventional explanations of the crisis as the outcome primarily of inefficient and corrupt economics systems in the countries concerned. It argues that the crisis was the result of premature and overly rapid financial liberalization in a world of increasing financial liquidity and volatility, and calls for a more cautious approach to financial liberalization, and a reform of the international financial architecture.

Book excerpt: Written by leading economists, the papers in this collection examine the different effects of trade and financial liberalization on the economic performance of Latin America and Asia. In the face of a deepening economic crisis in Latin America, the contributors examine the assumptions and dangers of indiscriminate economic liberalization policies which disregard the institutional arrangements or historical background of a country in the interests of narrower, more technical criteria such as speed of policy implementation. Addressing policy, conflict management, Asian and Latin American economies, and labor market institutions in Asia and Latin America, this study is an important contribution to the debate on trade and financial liberalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the social impact of the Asian financial crisis which began in July 1997. Several countries experienced an economic shock of unprecedented severity after decades of uninterrupted growth. The severe rise in unemployment and its repercussions in the worst-affected countries (Thailand, Republic of Korea and Indonesia) overwhelmed the underdeveloped systems of social protection. Higher unemployment and inflation combined to push many people into poverty. A central policy message is that current programmes of policy and institutional reform following the crisis, should include a basic rethinking of the social dimension of the future model of development. The author also argues for the introduction of unemployment insurance, the expansion of social assistance and the strengthening of active labour market policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly ten years after the Asian Financial Crisis, financial turmoil has reappeared – this time it is ravaging the world's wealthiest countries and dragging the global economy along for the ride. It forces one to reflect on the last major financial crisis to afflict the global economy, and to consider whether there are any similarities, and whether there are any lessons from that crisis that we can apply to the current one. Written by a distinguished group of individuals from government, the private sector, international organizations, and academia, this book provides an overview of developments in the main affected countries during the Asian Financial Crisis, as well as the lessons learned and corrective measures taken at the country, regional, and international levels. Importantly, attention is also paid to the areas where substantial improvements are needed. The current crisis heightens the relevance of these lessons. Lessons from the Asian Financial Crisis will be invaluable to those studying international relations, international finance, international economics and East Asian studies.

He argues that, while this model was undermined to some extent by the 1997-98 financial crisis, it remains robust and important in explaining economic events in East Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial systems in the East Asian region are commanding worldwide attention. Japan's financial sector, with an ailing banking system in the aftermath of a bubble economy, is undergoing a "Big Bang" deregulation, liberalization, and securitization. At the same time, the rehabilitation of Southeast Asian and Korean economies in the wake of the Asian financial crisis awaits restoration of their banking sectors. The region's bank-dominated and development finance-oriented financial systems are coming into friction with global capital markets that lack adequate architecture. In this volume, researchers from ten East Asian think- tanks analyse the financial systems in their respective economies. They survey the financial sector deregulation and liberalization that took place in the midst of economic booms and they evaluate the role of the financial systems in the region's current economic misfortunes. Together, the pieces in this volume lay the groundwork for understanding how financial systems in East Asia have evolved as the economies have grown more complex and capital markets have globalized, and how these systems must adapt to move beyond today's crisis to serve the region's economies in the future.

Book excerpt: This book contains papers selected from the 25th Federation of ASEAN Economic Associations Annual Meeting, hosted by the Economic Society of Singapore on 7–8 September 2000, in Singapore. East and Southeast Asia had just emerged from the devastation of the Asian currency crisis of 1997–8. The theme of the conference was chosen to enable participants to examine macroeconomic policies, particularly fiscal, monetary and exchange rate policies that would enable their countries to sustain economic growth without the trauma of financial and currency crises. Prominent economists Ronald McKinnon (Stanford University) and John Williamson (Institute for International Economics) presented four papers about alternative exchange rate regimes. Representative papers from five countries, viz. Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, the Philippines and Singapore, are also included in the volume. Contents:East and Southeast Asia After the Crisis:Asia's Recovery: A Comparative Analysis (O I Bacha)After the Crisis, the East Asian Dollar Standard Resurrected: An Interpretation of High-Frequency Exchange Rate Pegging (R I McKinnon)On the Periphery of the International Dollar Standard: Canada Versus Latin America Versus East Asia (R I McKinnon)Intermediate Exchange Rate Regimes for East Asia (J Williamson)Curbing the Boom–Bust Cycle: How Can the Industrial Countries Help? Book excerpt: As witness to one of the world's great crises in recent times, academics and students, business people, national and international government analysts, policy makers and political leaders worldwide have been pre-occupied by an effort to adequately unravel or sufficiently understand the factors that have brought about the so-called Asian financial, currency or economic crisis and hopefully to find plausible cures or solutions to it. This book examines the impact of economic globalization in developing economies and it applies empirical studies of all of the major countries to theoretical perspectives on the crisis.
