According to the Regional Air Quality Council, the use of sand as a traction aid contributes up to 45% of the particulate air pollution (PM sub 10) in the Denver area. The Environmentally Sensitive Sanding and Deicing Practices at the University of Colorado at Denver investigated literature and current practices from a wide variety of sources to arrive at a document which summarizes the current state of knowledge about deicing practices and their effect on human health and the environment. Topics include: properties of snow and ice, roadway traction, anti-skid materials, air quality impacts of anti-skid materials, water quality impacts of deicing chemicals, deicing chemicals, equipment to apply deicers, snow and ice management practices, and current practices obtained from interviews and site visits. Topics for further research are also discussed. This report recommends that the use of sand be reduced, that sand be swept up as soon as practical, that the use of alternative deicers be considered, that winter maintenance activities be timed for optimal efficiency, and that the Colorado Department of Transportation conduct technology transfer seminars around the State to increase awareness of environmental impacts.

Current disposal and cleanup regulations have a different focus: correcting the problems caused by earlier misguided attitudes and maintaining a non-degrading environment. Book excerpt: Professionals and students who come from disciplines other than chemistry need a concise yet reliable guide that explains key concepts in environmental chemistry, from the fundamental science to the necessary calculations for applying them. Updated and reorganized, Applications of Environmental Aquatic Chemistry: A Practical Guide, Third Edition provides the essential background for understanding and solving the most frequent environmental chemistry problems. Diverse and self-contained chapters offer a centralized and easily navigable framework for finding useful data tables that are ordinarily scattered throughout the literature. Worked examples provide step-by-step details for frequently used calculations, drawing on case histories from real-world environmental applications. Chapters also offer tools for calculating quick estimates of important quantities and practice problems that apply the principles to different conditions. This practical guide provides an ideal basis for self-study, as well as short courses involving the movement and fate of contaminants in the environment. In addition to extensive reorganization and updating, the Third Edition includes a new chapter, Nutrients and Odors: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Sulfur, two new appendices, Solubility of Slightly Soluble Metal Salts and Glossary of Acronyms and Abbreviations Used in this Book, and new material and case studies on remediation, stormwater management, algae growth and treatment, odor control, and radioisotopes.

Book excerpt: The study examines different mechanisms by which the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) can either limit or avoid incurring cleanup costs and liabilities or, if that course is unavailable, recover those costs which must be incurred. The key to this approach is information, obtained as early in the acquisition process as possible. Accurate information about site conditions will allow CDOT to avoid severely contaminated properties, if possible, and to properly value those properties that must be acquired.

The overall scope of this project involved examination of those resources directly related to the current statewide ESAL classification system and the generation of this final report discussing the research and analysis conducted and recommendation of procedures required for CDOT to develop and implement a more site-specific ESAL classification system. In this study Nichols Consulting Engineers (NCE) analyzed all available CDOT permanent and portable weigh-in-motion (WIM) data.

Book excerpt: Road salts are used as de- & anti-icing chemicals for winter road maintenance, and enter the Canadian environment through their storage & use and through disposal of snow cleared from roadways. This report summarizes the information critical to the assessment of these salts (including chlorides of sodium, calcium, potassium, & magnesium, as well as ferrocyanide salts added as anti-caking agents) as toxic. Information is included on their identity, properties, production, and sources; road salt loadings as determined from surveys; roadway snow disposal; releases of salts from patrol yards; environmental fate & pathways; and chloride concentrations in surface waters across Canada. The report concludes with an assessment under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act regarding toxicity & environmental impact of road salts on groundwater, aquatic ecosystems, soils, terrestrial vegetation, and terrestrial wildlife. A separate section characterizes the environmental exposure, effects, & risk of ferrocyanides.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has been a significant problem for many state and transportation agencies since the application of deicing salts was introduced. Much research has been conducted to develop corrosion protection systems that can prolong the life span of reinforced concrete structures. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has several routine and experimental measures to prevent corrosion of the rebar including epoxy-coated rebar, calcium nitrite admixture, organic corrosion inhibitors, a thick cover of quality concrete, and a waterproofing membrane covered by an asphalt overlay. An extensive literature review was performed to collect information on various corrosion protection systems that have been used in the U.S. and around the world. Current CDOT practices in terms of corrosion protection measures were reviewed. A draft inspection plan for Colorado's bridge structures was proposed.
