Book Synopsis The Outcasts of Melbourne by : Graeme Davison
Download or read book The Outcasts of Melbourne written by Graeme Davison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the glittering image of 'Marvellous Melbourne' there existed in the popular imagination another, very different, picture of the colonial metropolis. This was the city of 'low life', of crowded slums, poverty, disease and vice. The nine essays in The Outcasts of Melbourne attempt to reveal the social realities behind this picture. They include new accounts of the forces which created the city's physical environment. They show how perceptions of a city can be shaped by campaigning journalists, artists and writers. They present collective portraits of the poor and the 'criminal classes' - and of those who set out to save them. They describe how the city's guardians - the police, public health authorities and charity workers - responded to the challenge of the slums. By imaginative use of the rich deposits in the public records, these explorations in social history present new ways of documenting the lives of people whose daily activities were seldom reported in the popular press. In doing so, they also map the chains of causation which link the actions of individuals - appearing before a committee of a benevolent society, getting arrested, evangelising at a Salvation Army rally - to the social forces which have shaped the cities in which we live.
Download or read book Animals Count written by Nancy Cushing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether their populations are perceived as too large, just right, too small or non-existent, animal numbers matter to the humans with whom they share environments. Animals in the right numbers are accepted and even welcomed, but when they are seen to deviate from the human-declared set point, they become either enemies upon whom to declare war or victims to be protected. In this edited volume, leading and emerging scholars investigate for the first time the ways in which the size of an animal population impacts how they are viewed by humans and, conversely, how human perceptions of populations impact animals. This collection explores the fortunes of amphibians, mammals, insects and fish whose numbers have created concern in settler Australia and examines shifts in these populations between excess, abundance, equilibrium, scarcity and extinction. The book points to the importance of caution in future campaigns to manipulate animal populations, and demonstrates how approaches from the humanities can be deployed to bring fresh perspectives to understandings of how to live alongside other animals.

Download or read book The Life and Times of the Murray Cod written by Paul Humphries and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Murray cod is Australia’s largest and most iconic freshwater fish. Tales of the species have long been part of Australian folklore and this book describes its history, biology, cultural significance and conservation. The Life and Times of the Murray Cod reveals the many roles the species has played throughout the history of the continent, from its place at the heart of the Aboriginal creation story of the Murray River, its role as a food source for explorers surveying inland Australia in the early 1800s, to it forming the basis of a commercial fishing industry up to the early 2000s. Living for upwards of half a century and growing to astonishing sizes, today the Murray cod is a hugely popular target for recreational fishing, but its future is anything but assured. In the face of climate change, river management and fishing pressure, much needs to be done to ensure this extraordinary fish swims confidently into the future. The Life and Times of the Murray Cod draws on historical, anecdotal and scientific sources to reveal what makes this remarkable species so special, and will appeal to fishers, natural resource managers, conservationists and any reader interested in natural history.

Book Synopsis Demands On Rural Lands by : Chris Cocklin
Download or read book Demands On Rural Lands written by Chris Cocklin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning for the use of rural lands in the developed countries of the world has become an increasingly contentious process as resources become more limited and conflicting needs grow stronger. The critical questions are "Which is more important—agriculture, livestock production, recreation, industry, or urban housing?" and "Who decides priorities and responsibilities for use?" The capacity of the land to meet all of the demands placed upon it, without serious environmental disruption, has become a major concern for all. Recognizing the exigencies of the situation, the contributors define and evaluate the theoretical and methodological frameworks within which rural land-use problems can be analyzed. In , the discussions focus on the identification and characterization of resources and competing users of rural lands, stressing that a careful articulation of the problem is essential to effective planning. is aimed at developing appropriate information bases useful in planning for the problems related to the management of these rural lands. The discussion of policy options for rural resource use in builds upon the material in the previous two sections to provide a framework for an analysis of rural resource use.
