Book Synopsis The Future of Affirmative Action by : Richard D. Kahlenberg

Book excerpt: As the United States experiences dramatic demographic change--and as our society's income inequality continues to rise--promoting racial, ethnic, and economic inclusion at selective colleges has become more important than ever. At the same time, however, many Americans--including several members of the U.S. Supreme Court--are uneasy with explicitly using race as a factor in college admissions. The Court's decision in Fisher v. University of Texas emphasized that universities can use race in admissions only when "necessary," and that universities bear "the ultimate burden of demonstrating, before turning to racial classifications, that available, workable race-neutral alternatives do not suffice." With race-based admission programs increasingly curtailed, The Future of Affirmative Action explores race-neutral approaches as a method of promoting college diversity after Fisher decision. The volume suggests that Fisher might on the one hand be a further challenge to the use of racial criteria in admissions, but on the other presents a new opportunity to tackle, at long last, the burgeoning economic divisions in our system of higher education, and in society as a whole. Download or read book Negro Building written by Mabel O. Wilson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on Black Americans' participation in world’s fairs, Emancipation expositions, and early Black grassroots museums, Negro Building traces the evolution of Black public history from the Civil War through the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Mabel O. Wilson gives voice to the figures who conceived the curatorial content: Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, A. Philip Randolph, Horace Cayton, and Margaret Burroughs. Originally published in 2012, the book reveals why the Black cities of Chicago and Detroit became the sites of major Black historical museums rather than the nation's capital, which would eventually become home for the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in 2016.

Download or read book A Walking Tour of the University of Georgia written by F. N. Boney and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factual and entertaining, compact and easy to follow, A Walking Tour of the University of Georgia takes the reader on a leisurely tour of the campus, its history and heritage. When the Georgia legislature chartered the nation's first state university in 1785, the town of Athens was a wilderness. The first university classes, in 1801, were held in a log cabin, and no permanent structure was built until Franklin College--now Old College--was completed in 1806. Since that time, the university has expanded vigorously. The buildings of the University of Georgia--spread over several miles and encompassing many architectural styles--range from the federal style of Demosthenian Hall and the classical design of Brooks Hall to the glass dome and marble of Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. F.N. Boney's A Walking Tour of the University of Georgia guides the reader through the entire campus, offering easy-to-follow maps, photographs, and histories of most structures, as well as information about former students, college life, and the city of Athens.

Book Synopsis A Right to Read by : Patterson Toby Graham
Download or read book A Right to Read written by Patterson Toby Graham and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2002-04-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Right to Read is the first book to examine public library segregation from its origins in the late 19th century through its end during the tumultuous years of the 1960s civil rights movement. Graham focuses on Alabama, where African Americans, denied access to white libraries, worked to establish and maintain their own "Negro branches." These libraries - separate but never equal - were always underfunded and inadequately prepared to meet the needs of their constituencies."--BOOK JACKET.
