Book excerpt: The report on Three Dimensional Maps is broken into three distinct parts. The first is a summary of the accomplishments of the research including a listing of technical reports, a bibliography of related studies published, and a listing of students who were benefited in some manner by working on the project. The second section contains new information relating to the aesthetics of 3-D mapping and the final section provides some words of caution on the use of this technique. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This new edition of Cartographic Relief Presentation was edited for clarity and consistency but preserves Imhof's insightful commentary and analytical style. Color maps, aerial photographs, and instructive illustrations are faithfully reproduced. The book offers guidelines for properly rendering terrain in maps of all types and scales whether drawn by traditional means or with the aid of a computer. Cartographic Relief Presentation was among the essential mapping and graphical design books of the twentieth century. Its continuing relevance for the twenty-first century is assured with this publication."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Viewing Points for Three-dimensional Maps written by George F. Jenks and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report sets forth a series of guidelines for selecting viewing points for three-dimensional maps. These guidelines are based upon the need for clarity, realism, and aesthetic quality in map representation. The report contains 20 illustrations which show the various aspects of azimuthal and elevational positions of the viewing point. One illustration contains 96 views of the hypothetical surface used in the analysis. (Author).

Book Synopsis Project LASER by : William E. Carter
Download or read book Project LASER written by William E. Carter and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On October 17, 1996, more than three hundred kilometers of beaches, stretching from Mexico Beach, just east of Panama City, FL, to the western tip of Perdido Key, AL, were mapped using an Optech Inc. ALTM Model 1020, airborne laser swath mapping system. The data were collected using the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Aero Commander aircraft usually used for airborne photogrammetry. Most of the beach area was mapped twice, first in the east to west direction and immediately after in the west to east direction. The average flying altitude was 344 meters, with an airspeed of 72 meters per second. The laser swath mapping system scanned an angle of 15 degrees on either side of the flight line, covering a swath of approximately 180 meters wide, with a saw tooth pattern. The scan rate of 25 Hz and pulse rate of 5000 pulses per second resulted in a maximum spacing between scan lines of 2.9 meters and between pulses along the scan lines of 1.5 meters. More than 30 million of Earth Centered Earth Fixed (ECEF) Cartesian coordinates X,Y,Z data points were collected in 2 hours and 30 minutes of operations. The raw observational data were processed by Optech, Inc. personnel using proprietary computer programs. ASCII files containing the UTM coordinates of the surface point for each successful range measurement, along with ellipsoid heights were delivered to the University of Florida (UF) on 8 mm tape. UF personnel then processed the data to transform the coordinates into NAD 83(90) latitudes and longitudes and orthometric heights in the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD29) system. Commercial computer software (Surfer and Grapher, proprietary computer programs marketed by Golden Software, Inc., Colorado) was used to create samples of a variety of products, including three dimensional shaded relief "snapshots," contour maps, false colored maps, and beach profiles. The results obtained during project LASER demonstrate that airborne laser swath mapping can be used to map hundreds of kilometers of beach with sub-decimeter accuracy in a few hours, making it possible to obtain quantitative measurements of beach damage within hours after conditions are safe for pre and post storm flights."--p. 1
Book Synopsis Vertical Exaggeration in Three Dimensional Mapping by : George F. Jenks
Download or read book Vertical Exaggeration in Three Dimensional Mapping written by George F. Jenks and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiments reported upon indicate that 3-D maps can and should be made with vertical exaggeration. The approximate amount of vertical exaggeration needed to create 'realistic' maps has been found to correlate with the contour interval of the base map. It has also been shown that skilled map-readers can consistently evaluate 3-D maps. The report contains all of the data collected in the experiments and includes a large number of illustrations of 3-D maps. The vertical exaggerations to be used in different mapping situations are presented in graphic form. (Author).
