Book excerpt: "Relembrando-A Velha Literatura de Cordel e a Voz dos Poetas" really contains three important studies on the "cordel": 1) the revision and translation of Curran's PhD dissertation from 1968; 2) the augmentation of one of the chapters of the dissertation, treating Brazil's best known and pioneering poet Leandro Gomes de Barros; 3) the publication of a now historic series of interviews with forty "cordel" poets and publishers in the late 1970s. Curran dedicates much time and energy to this endeavor because he believes the researches were little known in their original form, and more importantly, with the passage of time and the evolution of the "cordel" and Brazil in general, they now remain as historic documents in Brazil's national cultural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

I&D L.I.F. In conjunction with a broad commemorative movement in Europe and America, the Institute for Philosophical Studies, based at the Faculty of Letters, University of Coimbra, in collaboration with the R&D unit L.I.F. – Language, Interpretation and Philosophy and with the “Centre for Philosophy” of the University of Lisbon organized on 19th and 20th November 2007 an international conference commemorating the 200th anniversary of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit (first published in 1807). On the occasion of this conference, the Portuguese philosophical community had the opportunity to come up against some of the most recent orientation in the analysis of this philosopher’s oeuvre, putting itself to the test as regards its analytical skills. This volume offers a picture of that encounter, as faithful as possible to what were, at the time, the papers offered by/expositions of the various authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophizing the Americas establishes the field of inter-American philosophy. Bringing together contributors who work in Africana Philosophy, Afro-Caribbean philosophy, Latin American philosophy, Afro-Latin philosophy, decolonial theory, and African American philosophy, the volume examines the full range of traditions that have, separately and in conversation with each other, worked through how philosophy in both establishes itself in the Americas and engages with the world from which it emerges. The book traces a range of questions, from the history of philosophy in the Americas to philosophical questions of race, feminism, racial eliminativism, creolization, epistemology, coloniality, aesthetics, and literature. The essays place an impressive range of philosophical traditions and figures into dialogue with one another: some familiar, such as José Martí, Sylvia Wynter, Martin R. Delany, José Vasconcelos, Alain Locke, as well as such less familiar thinkers as Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, Hilda Hilst, and George Lamming. In each chapter, the contributors find fascinating and productive matrices of tension or convergence in works throughout the Americas. The result is an original and important contribution to knowledge that introduces readers from various disciplines to unfamiliar yet compelling ideas and considers familiar texts from novel and prescient perspectives. Philosophizing the Americas stands alone as a representation of current scholarly debates in the field of inter-American philosophy. Book excerpt: "The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Political Theory provides an entry point into this burgeoning field by both synthesizing and challenging the terms that motivate it. The handbook demonstrates how mainstream political theory can and must be enriched through attention to genuinely global, rather than parochially Euro-American, contributions to political thinking. Entries emphasize exploration of substantive questions about political life-ranging from domination to political economy to the politics of knowledge-in a range of global contexts, with attention to whether and how those questions may be shared, contested, or reformulated across differences of time, space, and experience. They connect comparative political theory to cognate disciplines including postcolonial theory, area studies, and comparative politics. Creative organizational tools such as tags and keywords aid in navigation of the handbook to help readers trace disruptions, thematic connections, contrasts, and geographic affinities across entries"--

Book excerpt: As part of the larger, ongoing movement throughout Latin America to reclaim non-Hispanic cultural heritages and identities, indigenous writers in Mexico are reappropriating the written word in their ancestral tongues and in Spanish. As a result, the long-marginalized, innermost feelings, needs, and worldviews of Mexico's ten to twenty million indigenous peoples are now being widely revealed to the Western societies with which these peoples coexist. To contribute to this process and serve as a bridge of intercultural communication and understanding, this groundbreaking, three-volume anthology gathers works by the leading generation of writers in thirteen Mexican indigenous languages: Nahuatl, Maya, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Tabasco Chontal, Purepecha, Sierra Zapoteco, Isthmus Zapoteco, Mazateco, Ñahñu, Totonaco, and Huichol. Volume Two contains poetry by Mexican indigenous writers. Their poems appear first in their native language, followed by English and Spanish translations. Montemayor and Frischmann have abundantly annotated the Spanish, English, and indigenous-language texts and added glossaries and essays that discuss the formal and linguistic qualities of the poems, as well as their place within contemporary poetry. These supporting materials make the anthology especially accessible and interesting for nonspecialist readers seeking a greater understanding of Mexico's indigenous peoples.

Book excerpt: This unconventional and lighthearted introduction to the ideas of the major Western philosophers examines The Simpsons — TV’s favorite animated family. The authors look beyond the jokes, the crudeness, the attacks on society — and see a clever display of irony, social criticism, and philosophical thought. The writers begin with an examination of the characters. Does Homer actually display Aristotle’s virtues of character? In what way does Bart exemplify American pragmatism? The book also examines the ethics and themes of the show, and concludes with discussions of how the series reflects the work of Aristotle, Marx, Camus, Sartre, and other thinkers.

Philosophical thought is deciphered and made comprehensible and interesting to almost everyone. Far from being a novelty, each book is a highly refined appraisal of the philosopher and his work, authoritative and clearly presented. Each of these little books is witty and dramatic and creates a sense of time, place, and character. I cannot think of a better way to introduce oneself and one's friends to Western civilization. --Katherine A. Powers, Boston Globe. Well-written, clear and informed, they have a breezy wit about theme. I find them hard to stop reading. --Richard Bernstein, New York Times. Witty, illuminating, and blessedly concise. --Jim Holt, Wall Street Journal
