Book excerpt: Traditional financial services are rapidly being reformed by technology. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for more than one-half of the world's GDP and employ two-thirds of the global workforce, however a key barrier to growth faced by SMEs around the globe is access to financing. This is not a new issue, as the onerous information, administration, and collateral requirements associated with traditional loans have inhibited SMEs from seeking or securing financing. The 2008 financial crisis only exacerbated the problem, as many local retail banks (often the primary providers of SME financing) closed their doors and the appetite for taking on high-risk SME loans was quelled. Online business lending may be stepping in to fill this gap by resolving many of the barriers associated with traditional SME financing. This paper analyzes data from PayPal Inc., a company best known for its global online payment system, and from Kiva, a crowdsourcing platform. PayPal Working Capital launched in late 2013; it is a product that enables SMEs to apply for and obtain short-term credit. Our objective is to understand how technology is impacting SMEs' ability to access financing. Our findings suggest the following: (i) online business loans have stepped in to fill the SME funding gap left in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis; (ii) young and minority-owned businesses with low and moderate income benefit particularly from online business loans; and (iii) online business loans can boost the growth of SMEs in under-served counties. Based on increased sales of businesses that have received PPWC loans, we estimate that programs like this have the potential to boost economic activity considerably.

Book excerpt: Background: Almost half (49%) of all U.S. pregnancies are unintended. Of these, 43% end in abortion. Clearly, safe and affordable contraception and abortion services are vital for women to achieve their reproductive goals. Despite this major public health need, federal policies restrict funding for abortion research. SFP promotes scientifically sound research by funding studies on contraception and abortion, developing clinical guidelines, and advancing family planning knowledge to inform public policy. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate how SFP-funded research and SFP's evidence-based clinical guidelines have impacted family planning policy and practice. Methods: A review of legislative barriers to abortion research and a literature review of clinical guidelines provided important context for analyzing SFP's impact on the field. A semistructured, 30-question survey was sent to 309 SFP fellows to solicit their views about the impact of SFP's programmatic activities. In addition, two fellows who received SFP grants were interviewed about the impact of the grant on their research. Interview transcripts were coded in NVIVO 9.2 and analyzed for themes. Results: 171 fellows participated in the survey. They were comprised of physicians, clinicians, educators and social science researchers. Conclusions: SFP's main impact is contributing to knowledge about abortion and contraception and providing research support for typically under-funded research areas. SFP also attracts new researchers to the field, provides a supportive research community, and legitimizes family planning as a sub-specialization. Several fellows noted the need for more time for the research to have impact.

There's usually a gap between financial struggle and financial freedom. In order to overcome this gap between both, you need a "money bridge" in order to achieve your financial independence. This is the foundation of money management. Imagine a chasm or a gorge. The gap between the two rocky walls represents financial troubles (such as: bad debt, not enough money, foreclosures, etc.). On the left rock, you have financial struggle, and on the other side (the right rocky wall), you have financial freedom. You need a bridge in order to cross over and get to the other side of the chasm. The question is, "On which side you want to be in?" If you are on the financial freedom side, probably this money report won't be interesting for you. If you are on the financial struggle side, it's a must! You are going to learn how to build this "money bridge" in order to meet your financial goals. Counter-intuitively, money does not make you rich. It's something else that makes you rich where not many people really talk about. I am going to share it in this money report. Today, financial education is critical, because we live in a new economy. Things that worked before are no longer relevant. In fact, something that worked before can even work against you these days. You are about to learn what they are and what to do about it. Furthermore, you'll learn what controls your financial future, because there's a "mechanism" inside of us that makes us poor - causing us to struggle financially. You'll learn how to deal with this mechanism and what to do instead. Then, I am going to reveal some "money secrets" and what you need to know in order to ensure a stable financial future. Book excerpt: “I expected good, but this is great.” -Janet Pirus Phelps, Principle, Strategic CFO, Former CFO Papa Murphy's Pizza Gaps are holes in your organization where tasks fall and failure breeds. They inhibit your ability to implement strategic plans, lead people, and run successful projects. Daily, executives, middle managers, and project managers wrestle with “the big six”: Absence of common understanding Disengaged executive sponsors Misalignment with goals Poor change management Ineffective governance Lackluster leadership Ignoring any of these gaps endangers any strategy or project. They regularly destroy hundreds of companies’ ability to turn their corporate vision into business value—taking careers with them. Filling Execution Gaps addresses the sources of these gaps, and how to fill them. Without any one of these important functions, projects fail. Without change management, adoption suffers. Without common understanding, there is confusion. Without goals, business units, and capabilities aligned, execution falters. Without executive sponsorship, decisions languish. Too little governance allows bad things to happen, while too much governance creates overburdening bureaucracy. Without leadership at all levels of the organization, people are directionless. Using decades of experience, years of research, and interviews with hundreds of business leaders, author of the Amazon #1 Best Seller in Business Project Management, Rescue the Problem Project, Todd Williams illustrates how to fill these gaps, meet corporate goals, and increase value. Book excerpt: Stakeholders in the public and private sectors in Vermont have been increasing the state's investments in high-quality early care and education (ECE) programs for children not yet in kindergarten. Yet many families are not reached by the funds currently available, especially to afford care for infants and toddlers. Additionally, the ECE workforce has long been underpaid, both in terms of cash wages and benefits. Further expansion of public funds to ensure that young children can participate in high-quality ECE in the mixed-delivery system (both public and private providers) requires an understanding of the cost of high-quality ECE, what is a reasonable contribution families can make to the cost of the ECE they consume, and the potential public-sector revenue options to fill the gap. Vermont Act 45, passed in 2021, expressed a need to support Vermont's economy by providing access to high-quality ECE and ensuring that the state's early educators are fairly compensated and well supported. The act included a requirement for a financing study. To meet this requirement, the authors estimate the cost for high-quality ECE in Vermont using a mixed-delivery system. In addition, to understand the size of the funding gap that must be filled to expand subsidies to more families, the authors consider several designs for a sliding-scale subsidy schedule. The authors also identify a set of feasible and stable revenue streams that can be used alone or in combination to fill the funding gap and employ a series of economic models to estimate the net fiscal and economic impact of the effects of the increased subsidies and the identified revenue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of funding available from the financial sector for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is known as the financing gap. This report analyzes this gap for both credit and equity financing and seeks to determine how prevalent such a gap may be, both among OECD countries and non-OECD economies, and recommends measures to foster an improved flow of financing to SMEs and entrepreneurs. A significant number of entrepreneurs and SMEs could use funds productively if they were available, but are often denied access to financing. This impedes their creation and growth. The "financing gap" was the subject of the OECD Global Conference on "Better Financing for Entrepreneurship and SME Growth", held in Brasilia, Brazil in March 2006. Vol. 2 presents a synthesis of the Conference discussions on the credit and equity financing gaps, as well as on private equity definitions and measurements. It also offers a selection of papers given by some of the key stakeholders (SMEs, government and financial institutions) confronting these issues.--Publisher's description.
