Excerpt: ...I give and bequeath to the Hebrew Education Society of Philadelphia. The fringe of Jewish population along the northeastern boundary of the city continued to grow, and a colony of Russian immigrants existed there with all the customs, observances and habits of the mother country. The Education Society opened a school on December 28, 1879, at 624 Wayne street, in that part of the city known as " Port Richmond." The school in the B'nai Israel Synagogue was removed to 417 Pine street, and another was opened at Fourth and Poplar streets. The educational advantages that were offered were quickly taken advantage of, and so many attended these schools that they soon became overcrowded, and larger quarters had to be provided. Although many Israelites had settled at Port Richmond about the year 1876, the " great exodus" was yet to come. The persecution of the Jews in Russia caused thousands to shake the dust from off their feet and seek a land where they could worship their God as their conscience dictated. The first great wave of Russian immigration reached our shores in 1882, and the influx has continued ever since. The school at No. 624 Wayne street, Port Richmond, was soon found to be too small to meet the demands of the growing population. The properties, Nos. 2856-58 Lark street, a JACOB BAMBERGER stone's throw from the Wayne Street School, were secured and entirely remodeled for the use of the Society. The buildings were dedicated on Sunday afternoon, September 16, 1883. The list of those who contributed towards paying for the Industrial School on Lark street, will be found in the appendix.
