Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy IN this volume I have set down the recollections of a lifetime of sixty-five years. It deals with my service in the Royal Navy during a period of over half a century. I entered it when most of the ships were propelled by wind, steam being only an auxiliary; our gun carriages differed little from those of Queen Elizabeth's day; midshipmen were punished in peculiar ways, and seamen received the cat for comparatively minor offences. In 1913 I was retired at my own request, and I thought that my active career had ended. I was mistaken, for, as these pages record, I was drawn into the back waters of the War and became associated again with gunnery matters, with the fight against the enemy's submarines, and with the defence of London against aircraft, rendering to the best of my ability what service I could do to the country. I should not have decided to issue these chapters, which I began writing by way of recreation and amusement after I had gone on the retired list, if I did not hope that they might serve a useful purpose in future years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hurrah for the Life of a Sailor: Fifty Years in the Royal Navy Several years ago I wrote a series of articles for the 'boy's Own Paper, ' relating some of my ad ventures in the Navy, and my assortment of yarns was very favourably received by the juvenile public for whom it was written. I am consequently en couraged to expand these, bringing the story up to date, and illustrating the principal events, in the hope that they will make an interesting volume, and give some grown-up boys an idea of a sailor's life and experiences during nearly fifty years in her Majesty's service. In the early part of the year 1914, having nothing' to do, and as Ireland was arming for a civil war, I thought I would join the Ulster Field Force, but they had so many military officers ready to serve with them that I was not wanted. I was disgusted to find that there was a secret plot by which the Navy was to take part in the attack on Ulster. It was terrible to realise that the Royal Navy was to be employed against a section of Irishmen who were loyal to our King and the country, and that the civil war was to take place simply because a certain number of men wanted to remain in Parliament. The situation was unique. The political party in office had two courses open to them: one to go out of office and have no civil war; the other to remain in office and have a civil war. It seems incredible that two hundred and...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Musical Recollections of Fifty Years Richard's school-days were cut short at the age of sixteen when he was sent to this country to the care of an uncle, but where he soon began an independent career, te lying entirely upon his own efforts for sup port. His mother, a sweet and gentle creature, was the daughter of a Lieutenant Harries Of the Navy. Her brother - In-law had a posi tion in the Navy Yard at Portsmouth, and Richard's greatest delight was to take his vacations with this uncle. Thus at an early age he became familiar with the war vessels stationed there and much of the routine of the Royal Navy; one of his uncles was also an Officer on the ship that conveyed Napoleon to St. Helena. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty-Two Stories of the British Navy: From Damme to Trafalgar From 897 to the end of his reign, Alfred devoted much time to the construction of ships and the equipment of a fleet; a purpose which he effected with so much success that he earned for himself the title of The Father of the British Navy. Alfred seems to have been the first of the English kings to realise that the true principle of insular defence is to meet one's enemies upon the sea, and destroy them before they have time to effect a landing. Once realised, however, he made every effort to carry out this sagacious and far-sighted policy, a policy in which, for a thousand years, he has been followed by the wisest and best of his successors. To do this, the creation and maintenance of a national fleet became an imperative necessity. According to Dr. Campbell, Alfred reflected that, as the fleets of his enemies were frequently built in a hurry, hastily drawn together, meanly provided with victuals and rigging and overcrowded with men, a few ships of a larger size, built in a new manner of well-seasoned materials, thoroughly supplied with food and arms, and manned by expert seamen must, at first sight, surprise, and, in the course of an engagement destroy many with but little danger to themselves; and with this view he constructed a number of ships in most points twice the size of the largest ships then in use, and furnished with accommodation for double the number of rowers. These vessels were longer, higher, and yet swifter than the vessels in common use among the Danes so that Alfred was able always to engage his enemies at advantage, and, when necessary, to escape them by flight. As, moreover, these vessels were built upon a new model, they were wholly strange to the enemy, who were a long time learning the way to board them; hence their courage and seamanship did not avail them much. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life, and a Few Yarns I commenced this book with the intention of only writing on the Victorian Navy, and the chapter on the Constance. Is the result. But a friendly critic told me that it was rather technical and too impersonal for the general public, so I boldly launched into an autobiography, intending it to be a humble effort on the part of an old fossil to depict life in the Royal Navy during a service of forty-one years, as he found it. After all, it is only by the study of fossils that we are able to arrive at any conclusions as to the period' in which they existed. It is true that we have among the fossils, to mention a few, Tonge, Smollett, Michael Scott, Marryat, Chambre and Hannay, the last the author of that charming book Singleton Fontenoy, r.n., descriptive of naval life in the fifties of the last century. Nicholas and James are more geologists than fossilists, and only give dry details. Laird' Clowes has brought Up naval history to the year 1900 in a more human fashion, while Rudyard Kipling well, we all know his gems of naval life. The war has produced a new school, and I have read its works with' infinite enjoyment. I dedicate this ambitious work to the glorious Service. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Kennedy's classic naval history, now updated with a new introduction by the author This acclaimed book traces Britain's rise and fall as a sea power from the Tudors to the present day. Challenging the traditional view that the British are natural 'sons of the waves', he suggests instead that the country's fortunes as a significant maritime force have always been bound up with its economic growth. In doing so, he contributes significantly to the centuries-long debate between 'continental' and 'maritime' schools of strategy over Britain's policy in times of war. Setting British naval history within a framework of national, international, economic, political and strategic considerations, he offers a fresh approach to one of the central questions in British history. A new introduction extends his analysis into the twenty-first century and reflects on current American and Chinese ambitions for naval mastery. 'Excellent and stimulating' Correlli Barnett 'The first scholar to have set the sweep of British Naval history against the background of economic history' Michael Howard, Sunday Times 'By far the best study that has ever been done on the subject ... a sparkling and apt quotation on practically every page' Daniel A. Baugh, International History Review 'The best single-volume study of Britain and her naval past now available to us' Jon Sumida, Journal of Modern History
