Book excerpt: (Waltons Irish Music Books). Fifty choice tunes, as arranged and played by one of the all-time greats of Irish traditional fiddling, Tommy Peoples. Tommy Peoples was born in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, and grew up in Killycally, St. Johnston, Co. Donegal. He learned partly from his father but started lessons with his cousin Joe Cassidy at the age of seven. Peoples developed his own techniques of bowing from early in his playing career and is one of the most inventive and imaginative of traditional fiddlers. A move to Dublin led to his involvement in the foundation of The Green Linnet CeilI Band and, in 1974, to a brief spell with the group 1691. Soon after, he joined the legendary Bothy Band, with which he recorded an album in 1975. In the late 1970s he played for a time with the Kilfenora Ceili Band but was always happier in small sessions rather than stage performances. One of the most memorable traditional albums of this period is Matt Molloy, Paid Brady, Tommy Peoples (1978), notable for the great passion and energy of all three players' performances. Peoples has released a number of solo albums, including The High Part of the Road (1979), on which he was accompanied by Paul Brady. Throughout the 1980s and '90s he played small sessions, many of them around Co. Clare. The Quiet Glen/An Gleann Giiiin was released in 1998, with Aiph Duggan on guitar, and has strengthened Peoples' standing as one of the all-time greats of Irish traditional fiddling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 50 Tunes Volume 1 for Fiddle is one book in a 5-book series. The 50 Tunes series is a collection of Bluegrass, Old Time and Celtic tunes for ensembles, families and individuals. This book contains the same 50 tunes as those found in the other 4 books of the series, but carefully designed for the fiddle. The parts in this book range from beginner to advanced. All tunes contain a simple melody and most of the tunes contain an intermediate or advanced part. Many tunes contain a harmony part to match the melody. Since fiddle contests are a tradition in American and Celtic fiddling, 50 Tunes Volume 1 for Fiddle contains hoedowns, waltzes, reels, rags, hornpipes, jigs, polkas and airs. Some of the tunes are authentic to true championship fiddling and were arranged andrecorded by a former national champion fiddler. Companion online audio included. Tunes recorded by full band, not all instruments featured in every song.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author’s preface: “This book was conceived four years ago, almost to the day, at a time when I was teaching fiddle and mandolin in New York City. It was my idea then, with my students in mind, to compile a book of the most often played, most important and most interesting fiddle tunes from the various Celtic and North American traditions. The tunes were chosen by cataloging a large number of recordings by tune title. A tally was taken to find out which had been recorded most often. This established a foundation of material that could not be left out. To this list I added the names of other pieces which had not been recorded as frequently, but which I knew were played regularly and with respect. I admit to sprinkling the collection with a few lesser known tunes which happen to be personal favorites, but I am sure they will hold their own when placed next to the old war horses of the fiddler’s repertoire. . . . Although I started out with my students in mind this book has turned out to be the book that I’ve always wanted and I hope that it will serve the advanced player as well as the beginner.”

Book excerpt: The two southern most counties in Ireland, Cork and Kerry, have legendary music and dance traditions. on the border of these two counties, a rural area called Sliabh Luachra is especially well-known for its fiddle tunes and itinerant fiddle teachers. When speaking of this area's fiddle music, some describe a special lilt or backbeat, or they talk about the special role of set dances, but the most often expressed quality relates to the frequent use of slides and polkas. This book features transcriptions of 107 tunes as played by three of the region's most distinguished fiddlers: Pádraig O'Keeffe, Denis Murphy, and Connie O'Connell. Each fiddler is profiled, followed by a collection of meticulously transcribed tunes and annotations. an accompanying CD includes 30 of these tunes played solo by Connie O'Connell.
