Book Synopsis Historicizing the Pan-American Games by : Bruce Kidd
Download or read book Historicizing the Pan-American Games written by Bruce Kidd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pan-American Games, begun officially in 1951 in Buenos Aires and held in every region of the western hemisphere, have become one of the largest multi-sport games in the world. 6,132 athletes from 41 countries competed in 48 sports in the 2015 Games in Toronto, Canada. The Games are simultaneously an avenue for the spread of the Olympic Movement across the Americas, a stage for competing ideologies of Pan-American unity, and an occasion for host city infrastructural stimulus and economic development. And yet until this volume, the Games have never been studied as a single entity from a scholarly viewpoint. Historicizing the Pan-American Games presents 12 original articles on the Games. Topics range from the origins of the Games in the period between the world wars, to their urban, hemispheric and cultural legacies, to the policy implications of specific Games for international sport. The entire collection is set against the shifting economic, social, political, cultural, sporting and artistic contexts of the turbulent western hemisphere. Historicizing the Pan-American Games makes a significant contribution to the literature on major games, Olympic sport and sport in the western hemisphere. This book was previously published as a special issue of The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Book Synopsis Grammatical Number in English Nouns by : Mark A. Wickens
Download or read book Grammatical Number in English Nouns written by Mark A. Wickens and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from the coverage given to it in the grammars, number in English nouns has received relatively little attention, especially in the area of theoretical considerations. Guided by the principles of psychomechanics, Hirtle (1982a) put forth a fairly elaborate theory of number in English nouns. The aim of this work is to provide evidence to validate parts of Hirtle's theory, to verify some of his analyses, and to investigate several problems, some of which are mentioned in his work as subjects for further research. Specific areas treated are ailment nouns, liquid names, ending in "-ings," binary objects, abstract "-s," and external singulars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olympic Games, revived in 1896, are the most well known international multisport gathering--but since 1896, hundreds of other competitions based on the Olympic Games model have been established whose histories have not been well documented. The Encyclopedia of International Games captures (in one alphabetical sequence) the histories of these games, many of them for the first time. Eight appendices, notes, bibliography, index.

Book Synopsis Our Roots Grow Deep by : Daniel Gross
Download or read book Our Roots Grow Deep written by Daniel Gross and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Roots Grow Deep- The Story of Rodale by Rodale, Inc. Hailed by some as a "visionary" and others as a "quack," Jerome Irving Rodale and his wife, Anna, moved from New York City to the rural community of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, where they bought a farm and lived the life they had only dreamed about. J. I.'s interest in chemical free food and his own health led to the creation of Organic Farming and Gardening magazine in 1942, and in 1950, to Prevention magazine. After J. I. suffered a fatal heart attack on the Dick Cavett Show in 1971, his son, Robert, took over and incorporated organic gardening and farming and preventive health care into more far-reaching areas of organic living, active lifestyles, and regenerative agriculture. After Bob died tragically in 1990, Ardie, Bob's widow, and their family carried on the tradition. The company, still privately owned and run, brought the concepts of organic food, healthy active living, and environmental responsibility to the mainstream, and now reaches some 25 million customers through Prevention, Organic Gardening, Men's Health, Women's Health, Best Life, Bicycling, Mountain Bike, Runner's World, and Running Times magazines; best-selling books such as An Inconvenient Truth, The South Beach Diet, The Doctors Book of Home Remedies, and Eat This, Not That!; multimedia Web sites; and numerous philanthropic activities. In this gorgeous, full-color volume loaded with photos and memorabilia, the story of the modest beginnings of this fascinating family and their sixty-plus years of tireless work that now helps millions of people worldwide live a more whole life is now available for the first time.
