Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful survey of the "things" of medieval Europe allows modern readers to understand what they looked like, what they were made of, how they were created, and how they were used. All Things Medieval: An Encyclopedia of the Medieval World covers the widest definition of "medieval Europe" possible, not by covering history in the traditional, textbook manner of listing wars, leaders, and significant historic events, but by presenting detailed alphabetical entries that describe the artifacts of medieval Europe. By examining the hidden material culture and by presenting information about topics that few books cover—pottery, locks and keys, shoes, weaving looms, barrels, toys, pets, ink, kitchen utensils, and much more—readers get invaluable insights into the nature of life during that time period and area. The heartland European regions such as England, France, Italy, and Germany are covered extensively, and information regarding the objects of regions such as Byzantium, Muslim Spain, and Scandinavia are also included. For each topic of material culture, the entry considers the full scope of the medieval period—roughly 500–1450—to give the reader a historical perspective of related traditions or inventions and describes the craftsmen and tools that produced it.

Book excerpt: David Buch's informative volume is the first modern study edition and commentary dealing with almost all of the surviving French five-part scores of dance music from the ballets de cour 1575-1651. These full scores are especiall y important since most ballets from this time are preserved only in two-part readings (melody and bass). The exception here is a newly-created five-part score for the Ballet des Nations based on an original two-part setting. Also included are the six Allemandes from 1575 to ca. 1600 a Ballet cheval of 1615 a selection of miscellaneous Entres from several ballets prepared for the Concert Louis XIII par les Viollons et lest 12 Grands hautbois of 1627 and Philidor's five-part reading of seventeen Entres from the Ballet du Roy des Festes de Baccus of 1651.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efforts of the three collaborators resulted in a spectacle that bore little resemblance to ballet. During the premiere at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees on May 29, 1913, Parisians were incited to riot by the strange tension of the dancing and stark contrasts of the music and decor. The premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps became a legend overnight, and the notoriety of this event began immediately to distort the significance of the work, especially Nijinsky's choreography. He declared to the London Daily Mail on July 12, 1913, "I am accused, of a crime against grace."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This facsimile edition of a hitherto unpublished manuscript reveals a beautiful workbook of impeccable penmanship by an early nineteenth-century dancing master. The title page reads Dance Book T B. 1826.Included among the more than thirty ballroom and theater dances are examples of the shauntreuse, allemande, hornpipe, quadrille, and waltz. There are also rare dances with descriptive titles such as Pas Seul, Pas Deux, Pas Trois d'Eggville, Russian Dance, Vestris Gavotte, and Cossack Dance. The importance of the manuscript to both musicians and dancers cannot be overestimated . It includes the earliest known full-length choreographed waltz for two that, through its intricate arm positions, shows the influence of the eighteenth-century contredanse allemande. Photographed in New Zealand by John Casey. The published volume unfortunately contains some miscropped images; a corrigenda leaflet can be downloaded a href="https: //boydellandbrewer.com/media/wysiwyg/431corrigenda.pdf">here/a

Among the subjects she covers are: expectations of dance; style, costume, music and social coding; court dance versus social dancing; dance and the Valois dynasty; professional dancers, virtuosos and choreographers; burlesque; opposition to dance; and dance and the people. McGowan's sophisticated analysis of formal dance treatises allows her to recreate a sense of the actual practice of Renaissance dance and the mechanics of making a ballet. Nearly one hundred illustrations, many of them rare, accompany the text."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Vaslav Nijinsky's Jeux, to a commissioned score by Claude Debussy, is a daring dance poem about the libertine manners and mores of the Bloomsbury artists he and designer Leon Bakst observed at a nocturnal tennis party in London's Bedford Square. The ambiguous coupling and tripling Nijinsky explored in Jeux startled the public, as did Debussy's music, in which both the tango and turkey trot, as well as pleasure-garden themes inspired by Wagner's Parsifal are quoted. Critics attacked not so much the ethics of the ballet as its post-impressionist aesthetics, influenced by the French painters that Bloomsbury had revealed to England since 1910. Despite contemporary references, athletic moves and pure spatial geometry, Jeux disarmed spectators in 1913 because it still looked like a ballet. Nijinsky had discovered neoclassicism in dance. In 1996 Millicent Hodson, choreographer and graphic artist, together with Kenneth Archer, scenic consultant and art historian, premiered the reconstructed Jeux in Verona at the Teatro Filarmonico. During the spring 2000 restaging in London at the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, Hodson completed the reconstruction dance score.Nijinsky's Bloomsbury Ballet presents the dance score with its verbal and visual documentation of the period, as well as Hodson's choreographic drawings and text collated with music. Archer contributes an essay on Bakst's costumes and décor. The book is a companion volume to Hodson's reconstruction score for Le Sacre du Printemps, Nijinsky's Crime Against Grace, published by Pendragon Press in 1996.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fabritio Caroso was dancing master to some of the greatest princely families of Italy, and Nobiltà di dame, his sumptuous collection of ballroom dances and their music, reflects an age that believed that the person of high rank should be a work of art, uniting strength and beauty. Caroso's detailed instructions (including rules for steps, style and etiquetter, and forty-eight actual choreographies) are unequalled by any contemporary manual in their specificity and clarity. Most dances are preceeded by an engraving showing the opening position and illustrating many aspects of dress, posture, and gesture. A full scholarly apparatus, giving new information unavailable elsewhere, makes the book even more valuable to dancers and to students of dance and music at the junction of the Renaissance and Baroque eras.
